Hi am playing a few courses in america in November and wondered if there was any american members who have tips on cheaper golf. We are playing troon north (both courses) , greyhawk, we ko pa, and wildfire (both courses). The online booking is expensive. Any american (or Uk) tips on getting these courses cheaper? Any assistance appreciated.. regards Steve

I've played lots of the courses around the Phoenix area and not once have I booked online! They are rarely fully booked although they can be busy early to mid-mornings. You are going in the high season so golf will be more expensive than any other time of the year. You will however get a much cheaper 'twilight' rate that generally starts after 1 pm. With sunset at 6 - 6.30 pm you will comfortably get in 18 holes. You can also just turn up and haggle (doesn't always work, but I've had one or two results). Finally, once you arrive, pick up a copy of the 'Arizona Republic' newspaper - the back pages are full of golf deals and you will find lots (including the really good ones) at anything from 20% to 50% cheaper. I'm sure you'll have a great time, and I'm so envious.......................... If I see you before you go, I've got a 'golf course' map of the area which you are welcome to take with you,

Sunset in Scottsdale, AZ in November ranges from 5.36 pm at the beginning of the month to 5.20 pm at the end of the month. Once the sun goes down it gets dark very quickly. As for twilight times, most of the 5 star course will either have a "twilight" tee times that prevent you from completing the round or no "twilight" at all. If it's just 2 of you then you could leave it 'til about 5 days in advance and call the course. They may then have specials.... if it's 4 or more in the group then you may want to arrange a round of golf in advance and secure your tee time (that means paying the higher rates). Carol is correct about the local paper the Arizona Republic, but they are rarely the top courses that you seem to be looking to play. In November, the rates for the those courses are as follows: Troon North 233 dollars M-T and 260 F- Su Grayhawk 206 dollars Wildfire 162 dollars WeKoPa 158 dollars. The great thing about Scottsdale and Phoenix is that there are so many great courses and not all of them are expensive. Eagle Mountain, Sunridge Canyon, Trilogy at Vistancia, Whirlwind, Las Sendas, Longbow.... the list goes on. If you want advice on courses and rates then call Xona Resort Suites, in Scottsdale - 480-585-1529 .... they have a golf department that can advise on all the courses and the green fees. Where are you staying? Hope that helps.

Thanks John, been away for a bit so sorry for the delay in responding. We have pretty much done what you suggested in that we have taken the plunge and booked the courses and hope that we cant get them cheaper when we get there. As you say the twiglight they offered with a four ball looked like you would struggle and it seemed a long way to go to miss the last two or three holes so all courses booked up. We are staying in the marriot and two or three of the blokes have been before so hopefully i will be sitting in the back of the car being driven about to and from golf courses. Allowing of course for a cool beer after the golf to discuss one of my shots!!! Thanks for the input. Steve
