I was thinking about keeping my golf ball warm now that the temperature is getting lower. Normally, between the green and my next shot I will keep my golf ball in the palm of my hand, and also in my pocket. Hopefully this will keep the ball warm enough for it to perform normally. Then I thought about getting one of those pocket hand warmers and keeping a golf ball in there. Then having two golf balls, and using each one for one hole and then change it for the warm one, whilst putting the used ball in the hand warmer. Taking this to it's extreme, I could, now that the winter rules are with us, change the ball for each shot. At the moment I'm using Pro V1x golf balls. I know that in a competition you have to use the same golf ball for the entire round, but is there a rule that would prevent me from changing my golf ball for a warm one, of the same make, after each shot? Think you will find that once you have tee'd off on a hole you must play the same ball, unless it is deemed lost when you can put another ball in play. or damaged but must be agreed with playing partner. winter rules only allow lift, clean and place (mown areas) not "swap".

Mark is right on the rules - you can only change the ball on the tee, or when it is damaged (subject to partner's agreement). Russ - you might also be wise to enquire about any ruling on keeping the golf ball warm artificially. I don't know of any rule, but in a (very old) Golf Instruction book, it says " You can now purchase these nifty little things called hand warmers, which go a long way towards making winter golf more enjoyable - however, if you are seen to be using them to keep your balls warm, it will be frowned upon and your integrity may be questioned''. So there!

Ah Carol, I think you will find that the rule you have quoted refers more to 'ungentlemanly conduct' in that you are not allowed to 'artificially' keep your balls warm.

I do think that keeping my golf balls warm by means of an artifical means would be outside the boundary of fair play. Keeping it warm in the palm of my hand isn't. I do know that if I have a damaged golf ball then I can, after consulting my partner/opponent replace the ball with a good one. Russ

You could always play abroad in the winter and then none of this would be an issue.

I think the key question is whether this is a 'friendly' game or a match. Personally I couldn't give a monkeys if the player I was playing with kept his ball warm or not. I only play socially so it makes no difference to me. In a match however it may be a different matter. Know that does not help. Peter

Its seems quite a normal thing to me to keep my golf ball warm, after all we read in magazine about the sicence of golf balls.Has to Russell's ball warmer(no pun) in the spirit of the game, perhaps this shouldnt be allowed...I myself once putted out, clean and like Russell keep the ball in my hand and often find myself breathing hot air into my hands(no pun from you mark R)about the hot air ha ha...Perhaps TSG need to look further into this issue for all of us...Well it is natural to have warm balls in your pocket(sorry!)

I have just played a round in 100 degree here in florida, so my ball should have been warm enough but guess what, it still did not go straight, or very far, was not inclined to drop into the little hole very often, liked playing in the sand and on the 18th couldnt swim.... so much for hot balls................ it is definitely a lot of ..........!!!!!.....

100 degree's, there can only be one problem with your Ball Ian.............................heat stroke , which as you found out can be more destructive then a golf stroke. extreme heat and sun light plays havoc with the ball, very hard to go straight with the sun blinding it vision, why fall into the cup and darkness, when it is much more fun to find a sandy lie on a beach nearby. And as for not swimming on the 18th, by then the poor little thing was so hot it just wanted to soak it's self in the cool depth, only re-appearing at a later date in the pro shops lake ball bin. now that story was a load of !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
