The Fact that there are more players capable of winning and more in the field to beat, Woods is a hard act to follow. how would Hogan or Nelson get on with todays equipment likewise Woods playing with the gear they had back then ?

Personally It has to be between Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan their swing looked like it was done with ease and no effort. Just my opinion though.

i think until tiger woods passes jack nicklaus record of 18 majors jack nicklaus is the most sucssesful golfer of the 20th century i think tiger and jack are similar in the fact they have the ability to focus when really have to , however jack was a more accurate driver ofm the ball and tiger has a better short gme Mark britton

Bobby Jones is a name that is hardley mentioned,a truley great amateur player who won 7 majors back in the 20's and one off the first players which used a a more upright stance, which Byron Nelson used especially when steel shafts came along...........

My vote would be Sevy. How many times did you see him in the ryder cup when playing with Ossie that he played a shot to save the hole when everyone said '1 down' Steve

I'd have to go for Ben Hogan as the having the best, most elegant swing and I'd go for Sevvy as being the most naturally gifted shot maker.

Hat in the Ring !!! From what I have heard Bobby Jones was a pretty good player in the 20's/30's. Retired very young from the game (I believe) but is always mentioned by the older golfing experts (Alliss, Critchley etc...) as being an extraordinary talent. So - a vote for Bobby Jones

Sorry but I don't think that Tiger qualifies as "the greatest golfer" in the wider sense as I find the spitting and bad language unacceptable. I am sure the greats of the past would praise his talent, but the rest ....... ????

I'm going to buck the trend and vote for a golfer I've seen play, rather than someone in 20/30's who I've heard of. His name is Tiger Woods. Without him golf wouldn't have had the coverage it has received in the past 10 years. Admittedly, he's not my favourite, that would be Seve. But I think all of us playing today owe a lot of thanks to Tiger, maybe not yet, but will become the greatest golfer ever.

A very good question but I do think it's impossible to answer! The old players had equipment that was so inferior to today's stuff that it would be hard to imagine today's players using the old stuff, or even the old players using today's equipement. Russ

jack nicklaus has said to get any benefit out of the stuff today you need a certain amount of club head speed , i tend to think that jack was a straighter driver of the ball but tiger has the best short game in the world it's 1 of the reasons he's the no1
