I have recently been offered a Motocaddy S3 that was purchased in October 2007. This included a 27 hole battery and plastic scorecard and Motocaddy golf bag.

Unfortunately the current battery need replacing as it can only manage about 16 holes now but apparently these can be bought for around £50. This particular trolley has seen a lot of action maybe on average 2-3 rounds a week during a typical season.

I was wondering if anyone could advise me on the possible pit falls of this trolley and if their was anything I should look out for mechanically.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Kind Regards

Hi dale,

I think it's the Motocaddy S3 that is used as the hire option at the London Golf Club. If so (and I'll check) they get used probably 5 times per week and seem very reliable. The only problems I know of is - battery (obviously) and occasionally you'd get one where the speed dial wouldn't turn to zero so you'd have to use the On/Off switch to stop the thing or it would creep off while you're taking your shot to the general amusement of everyone except you - especially if there was a bunker near by...

Good trolleys but it would have to be cheap to my mind - 2.5 rounds per week for 30 months = 300 rounds @ 5 miles per round = 1500 miles on a 200 watt electric motor !

Pete,

Thanks for your comments. I am getting the trolley for around £125-150 mark but my worry as you have pointed out is that it is coming to the end of its life and will soon require parts which can be sourced easy enough but once you add £10 for this and £25 for that in a few months plus the £50 for the replacement battery to get the thing going for 18 holes it may be more hassle than its worth.

I have looked around and seen cheaper models but to be honest I am not keen on the styling thus the above seems the only way to dip my toe into the world of electric trolleys without spending £350+ especially when you consider my green fees will also be due around about now!!!!!!!

Kind Regards

Hi Dale,

Yep, a conundrum, but you could get a brand new S1 Digital (with battery, warrenty etc) for £280 which compares with the £150 + £50 battery you are considering for a 2nd hand S3 (which is £360 new). Why don't you offer him £100 and see what he says? (then you have money spare to comfort you if it's on it's last legs and needs lots of new bits this summer)

My s3 is three years old and is beginning to have probs. The batteries were always a problem area and I now have two 18 hole batteries which I alternate, seems to work ok. the engine has only recently started making a ginding noise as it moves along, and I have contacted Motocaddy to try and get it serviced ,but still waiting for a reply. I play four times a week so t has done a few miles, but I now have to stop when moving near other players lest  the noise disturbs them.
Overall a good trolley but after 2 1/2 years is it about to start costing me dosh!

good luck, Hwk.

I purchased a Powa Kaddy Freeway new about 12 years ago,it cost about £400 then, that was with 2 batteries and was the best investment I made, although it seemed expensive at the time,it was part of an insurance claim when i had all my golf gear stolen from my shed.I had to put some money towards it but it worth its weight in gold.
I am still getting by with the same batteries, one has just done 18 holes round the Dukes course at Woburn, although I need to replace them this year.I had a new gear box fitted 3 years ago that cost £90,and had a new handle fitted this year, for about £45.It is still going strong.I couldn't play 36 holes on a society day carrying my clubs,it probably saves me 6-7 shots around. For me it's been a godsend and would recommend Powa Kaddy any day of the week above anything.I used to be known as the Tart with the Cart. in my society, funny how most of them now have an electric trolley.
Perhaps another idea is to look on E bay there are quite a few bargains to be picked up there, but buying a new one is all ways best.Remember you will only get what you pay for and thats Powa Caddy for me

good luck in your search
