Hi, l have just watched the recent PGA tournament haeld at Pebble Beach resort and after hearing it was open to the public decided to check out the prices.......$495 for 18 holes l nearly fell through the floor!!!!!!!!..........Question is: Although playing abroad has weather advantages, why are we prepared to pay between £50 and £90 a round when we only pay £15 - £20 at home, and should we accept this?

I can top that.  I was in Las Vegas last week, and went over to the Wynn Hotel to check out the Country Club Grill - which overlooks the 18th hole of the Wynn Golf Club.  This is the old (upgraded) course that used to be part of the former Desert Inn.  Green fees are US$500 per round, caddy mandatory (with the associated gratuity).  Didn't get on to the course for a look, but I hear it's nice.

I played lots of golf while in Vegas, and there were bargains galore.  I paid between $20 - $45 for each round, and these are resort courses.  Granted, those are "resident rates" (I have a condo in Vegas, and have a Nevada I.D.) - but even non-resident rates were the lowest I've ever seen.  The recession has hit hard there, and courses are offering all kinds of incentives to get folks out to play.

If you think its worth it, you pay it!

If not you dont, I was on anothe forum where a guy said

"He did not enjoy the Old Course" - that is his opinion and we can hardly tell him he is wrong!

Anyhow most do enjoy it, even at the price for a public course and even having to be there at dawn - he was the exception.

I reckon If I ever had the opportunty (Time / money)  to play Pebble, I would not resent the price, that being said, IT WOULD BE A 1 TIME DEAL!

It's a personal judgement based on lots of factors (how good your game is, the quality, challenge and beauty of the course, what the wife will let you pay...) but to me I'd pay two or three hundred to play a fantastic course but not every day. Having said that I wouldn't pay $500 for a round because my game isn't up to it and I'd undoubtedly feel I didn't get my monies worth and/or appreciate the experience enough. Maybe next year...

I do believe that we pay far too much for our sport.

As already said you pay for what you want. but I don't think we pay to much for golf, it all comes down to personal choice or "must have". you can go to any country and pay £15 - £20 (depending on exchange rate) for a game of golf or you can pay £200 - £400. If you wish to play the Courses which have held or still hold Top PGA tour events or has been designed by a well know player/architect, then you will certainly have to expect to pay anything from £50 upwards, but there are plenty of deals around, winters fee's or 2-4-1 Have just played Prince's, £40 unlimited golf and breakfast(winter rate), via TSG a round on the Heritage course at The London Club (guest of a member), host of the 2008/2009 European open, £55 including complimentary buggy and range balls (it cost £65 winter fee to play the international course at The London club, which is the pay and play). Am playing Woburn Dukes and Duchess courses in April, £130 including lunch (again winter rate). ChartHills has been running a special deal for tuesdays and thursdays in Jan/Feb of £25. The same goes for equipment, you can either pay £50 for a driver or £400, £30 for a pair of shoes or £300. How many 18 plus h/c players do you see using ProV1 golf balls, when there is a choice of lower priced balls which would suit their game better. If you read the reviews in the golf mags, there is little difference now between The Named gear and that from less well know makers.
