I played a game very recently, with some guys (Not TSG Members) one of the guys who is a 9 handicap & takes his game very seriously, threw his driver 3 times & his 9 iron once! I am aware that golf can be a stressful game, but I don't think I would ever throw a £200 driver towards a tree. Just wondered what lengths people go to, to relieve their frustration over a bad shot? I must confess I do occasionally hit the ground with my club (Never on the green!) & use the odd swear word. Playing with someone who gets very angry (all be it only for a few moments)can be upsetting for the more easy going 'stress managed' players. Perhaps we should have a new rule that points are deducted for unacceptable behaviour?........................NB I am also annoyed that when I put new paragraphs in my blog on TSG, they disappear when I post it????!!!

Roly,

Some years ago, a group of us all used to play various different courses, and one guy in particular was a very poor sportsman (this translates as a club chucker). I remember one time, on an early long par 4, he reached a greenside bunker in 2, proceeded to take 11 shots to get on to the green for a 2 putt 15. For the remainder of the round he was unbearable.. He spoke to no-one, played his shots then walked off without waiting on others to play, launched clubs around the course, and it was generally a most uncomfortable experience for the rest of us.. Back at the bar after the game, he was laughing and joking about it when questioned.. Some of us got together and agreed a "card" system, which we explained to all.. Each outburst, if severe enough, warranted a yellow card.. Two yellows got you a red card, which resulted in a 2 game ban. A crude system, but it worked.

Most club chuckers know they are affecting their playing partners but do little to curb their behaviour.. The card system may or may not have an effect, dependant on how you adhere to it.

I've played with a couple of people who go into a rage when they hit a bad shot, either shouting/swearing or throwing/hitting the ground with their club.

My opinion is that it's not the club that hit the bad shot, it's the idiot holding it!  And having paid a fair amount of money for my clubs why would I want to risk breaking/bending them!

A good player would be able to use almost any clubs and still shoot a decent score.

In my view people that throw their clubs about should be banned from the course.(Health & safety act) We all get frustrated at times but that's golf, just when you think you are on top of it ,it bites you back. I don't think I've ever had a round when I have hit every shot perfectly. And yes like Roly I admit to hitting the ground with my club on occasions, and a few choice words uttered in frustration. Another point, what about the guy who is not having a good round who walks of the course and goes home, leaving his playing partners to finish their round without him.Is this just as bad as throwing your clubs about or worse?

each to their own I think, I love have a good swear up when I play a bad shot ... normally to the amusement of my playing partners. Why should the action of someone else effect your game ? So what if someone throws clubs, swears or hits the ground. Who looks the idiot at the end of the day ... them And its only for one round as you won't play with them again

I think it might be frustration - my Dad used to throw his clubs all over the place - we've spent ages in the rough looking for a 6,7,8,9 irons. Remember him bending his 9 iron round a tree after one particular bad shot. 'nother time he hit his trolley so hard it bust the wheel - served him right had to carry his big summer bag all the way from the furthest part of the course. He'd still have a good chuck even when he was seniors captain!! I bet he's still throwing his clubs about in heaven. Think you just need to laugh it off with a "what did the club do this time then" I'm sure the individual will get the message eventually.

The only way to cure your friend's temper is to walk off the course and tell him when he stops acting like a child you will play with him again.

Had the same problem playing with a 2 handicap HACKER.Kicked his bag, clubs going right, left and every where else. His sense of language was choice.
My solution was as follows, refused to sign his card at end of round ,told him he was a thundering disgrace and left him on the 18th green, wondering what to kick next.
