HI Chaps and Chapesses,
I wanted your opinion on the appetite for a Social Golfer competition kicking off next Spring. There seems to be a fair amount of people playing in the Hampshire/Surrey/Kent area. It would be good to set up a couple of tournament games throughout the year (nothing too organised and costly), but a good day on the course where we can meet some of the cyberspace faces.
The keys would be:
- At least 20 participants (Deposits held)
- A course that is suitable in location and price (Pine Ridge has been a good middle ground for example)
- Fun atmosphere - 'its not the bleedin Masters!' (a quote from a good friend of mine)
Who is interested?

Hi Chris,
Great idea, there have been a number of similar competitions run across the year by members in the South East and beyond and it can all be managed from the comfort of your PC, so let us know if you need any help with this........
In the meantime, look out for an announcement coming soon regarding the annual TSG Golf Day, where there will be many prizes on offer!
Regards
The TSG Team

Absolutely, maybe we should try and arrange the teams into counties?? Bob from TSG has been in touch and I am just waiting for him to help me put something together........ Do you think you could put a team or two together from Essex then Chris?

I would most certainly be up for a round at Pine Ridge.
It takes no time from Luton - if we from north of the river are permitted to join in!?

Don't want to be a party pooper, but this was tried by Dave Smith, but failed to get the support it needed.
I would be happy to join in any midweek events as long as they are well supported and organised.
Looking forward to next summer spring already.

There is always two issues with such events - [1] Getting the numbers? [2] Whether it's played during the week or weekends?
Both of these issues are interlinked as it is more likely that you can get a bigger response at the weekend whereas weekdays although likely to be less cost, many would have to have days off from work. Frances did create a number of excellent events at Pine Ridge on Sundays; these were usually two months a part. unfortunately, the level of support dropped from a massive 25-30 down to less than 12 so its not easy! Where did they all go I ask?? I would suggest the best way forward is to make sure that these events are put up on the events calender well in advance and advertised. You could do a weekday event and a weekend event but probably best to have these dates some way apart. But you are always dependent on those that are available to play! It may be worth getting the TSG Team in on this challenge and get them to set up maybe two events in the year!!Maybe they could set up a payment system which everyone would have to pay in advance too when they join the event that way you are likely to get full attendance rather than people adding their name to an event and then pulling out when the time approaches. These are just ideas....I hope they are of use?

Hi Chris
I would be up for it if it is Surrey to represent the "Ladies" as long as you don't start too early in the morning as I run a bed and breakfast, but anywhere around Pine Ridge is good for me.

Dear TSGers,
OK, following Chris' initial posting and further debate, we've been knocking this one around for a few weeks now and we think this might work:
The TSG Counties League Trophy (I am sure we can think of a better name!)
- We invite all counties to entry a team e.g. a)Essex b)Herts c)Kent d)Surrey e)Bucks f)Berks g)Sussex h)Hampshire and i)Beds etc
- A captain and vice captain are appointed for each county and they will share the responsibilities of their team in 2011 and pick each home venue
- TSG will set up bespoke TSG groups and invite joiners
- Captain and VC pick the teams but ensure everybody in the group gets at least one game through the year, to ensure it doesnt get too clicky!
- There is then a monthly round robin match a) vs h) etc. with TSG making the draw to ensure impartiality(!) e.g 9 teams = 8 matches (Mar-Oct)
- Teams would consist of 4,8 or 12 (depending on the interest) e.g. Ryder Cup singles style (To be agreed by Captian/VC) but played in four-balls
- Games are to be played on a Sat/Sun
- Games are posted by TSG on last weekend of each month with each Captain or VC then joining the match with a '+3, +5 or +7 guests' or they can invite their team to attend one by one
- Captain/VC then report back on game result and TSG add result to league table - posted on a new site page
- This could then be accessed through The Clubhouse dropdown - where other members can then comment or add game notes, banter?
- Only those with valid TSG handicaps can join in (3 cards or more - thus avoiding banditry!) and if there are any last minute dropouts, that singles match is forfeited - thus meaning flak from there fellow team members and this will hopefully avert teams being let down.
- If a team does loses a player, the four-ball would just become a three ball, meaning the opposing teams player still gets a round in! Participants can still enter in there own cards on TSG as well.
- TSG will put up prizes for the winning team e.g. Branded TSG Polo Shirts etc (these are currently in the making!)
- We'll also donate a small trophy for the winners to be presented at the end of the year
- We could even try and find a sponsor......
I think this would make a nice contrast to the TSG Golf Day (which will be May/June next year) as it will keep interest throughout the season.
Some of this will need to be worked out in more detail but I think theres a thread of an idea there.....alas, we cant start accepting money for bookings (See John West's comment) as we dont currently have the facility or the time!
Whatdayathink? Comments welcome..........but lets no make it too serious guys - we'll leave that to the traditional 'Bricks & Mortar' clubs!
Ian

Which county would you play for if you live in berkshire but are a member of a Hants club?

It sounds great, but what about those of us who can only play during the week I feel that some games should be played in the week as well as week-ends

I guess it is an unfortunate fact of life that some people can only play weekends and some weedays only.
To play some games mid-week will mean that ALL teams will need to have a mix of players - which may be easier said than done.

Hi ALL,
I would just like to thank Ian and the rest of the team for their efforts. Well done TSG team.
I do not want to be scrooge but I think this team process is likely to be to much to keep running throughout the whole year. My reason being you need to have a large number of participants to make the teams up, you need to have elected captains and vice captains etc. All of which could lead to numbers dropping as you can never guaranty personal availability. Add to that the weekday issue and we are looking at something unmanageable!!! We had the same issues on a match play competition in 2009 which ran over 5 months - it was difficult to make sure everyone played there matches to complete the nock out rounds!!
I would suggest that to keep interest in a major event is to have "TSG" competitions during the summer months which are based on an individual competition and a team event. As per Pine Ridge competitions previously run by Frances she would have the 4 balls selected based on handicaps that came to roughly the same total handicap for each team. Best two/three scores per hole would score. This would keep the interest running in two ways - individual and team. Teams would be selected based on those that would attend with a cut off date of one week prior to allow time to sort. You could also have teams of 3 but they did not have the luxury of an individual score for a hole being wiped as all 3 had to score!!
I would also suggest that these events are created by the TSG Team as to rely on specific individuals to coordinate may not be a good idea as such events need deposits and I know from experience that trying to make it clear that people only add themselves to an event if they definitely can attend is risky - Frances had a number of such issues when doing the Pine Ridge events [note you could always judge which players would be an issue as the regulars are always good to attend it but getting hold of those players is difficult].
Hence my question about setting up a paying in structure through TSG when you add your name working on the principal that if you pay up front you are more likely to show up!!
I would suggest doing one event first then see how that progresses.
Cheers,
John.

Hi All,
OK, further to John's comments and in the absence of any other contributions, how about the following:
We at TSG HQ agree that a monthly competition may be asking too much at this stage and as John points out it could be difficult to maintain the momentum over 8 months........
And as you know, we will soon be announcing details of the 2011 TSG Golf Day (were just dotting i's and crossing t's), this will be scheduled for late May/early June and consist of an individual and team event + much much more.........
However, what if we add a second 'Major' to the TSG calendar in August, whereby it is solely a Team Event, rough idea as follow:
- All TSG members are invited to enter a team of four - Captain only to join game +3 Guests
- Venue to be decided by TSG subject to entrants locations
- Tournament to be played on a Sat (TBC but the TSG Golf Day will be a Fri, thus helping those with jobs)
- Team Handicap 3/4 of total team combined Handicap or as John says - best 3 scores per team count
- All entrants required to be TSG members with 3 cards submitted to the TSG system
- TSG to provide trophy and a few prizes and maybe even a sponsor!
Final costs to be determined later but will be kept to minimum especially if its played at the weekend!
Look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts..........
Ian

Hi Ian and rest of TSG Team,
I like both.
Just one observation, from previous years I have noticed that August games can drop due to holidays and I would suspect that numbers available for such an event may also drop. As a result, it may be worth moving to July or September but whatever you decide the concepts look good.
Cheers,
John.

Hi All,
I think John has made a valid point on dates(school holidays etc)...........perhaps first week/end of September would be better thus giving a little more time between official TSG competitions!
If theres no more views/thoughts, we'll start making plans for this in the New Year......
Happy Golfing!
