Golfing in Faro/East Algarve

Paul McGinley set up earlier this year a pickup point at Faro Airport where you can rent the latest golf clubs (35-45€ per week) ..... www.clubstohire.com is their website, great idea and bargain especially when all the airlines are charging massive money to travel with clubs and can be seen as try before you buy.... Also next year Malaga, Edinburgh & Majorca pick up points

www.blueskygolf-rental.com on the border of Spain/Portugal, do club hire, electric trolleys and GPS rental, alot cheaper than renting at the course.

Warning... some of the golf courses charge very high fees compared to the UK...

Is it the recession (apparent to all of us except Lord Young - I know it's unfair but I do like a bandwagon...) but, it seems to me that the golf holiday market is moving pretty quickly away from expensive, hotel based deals offered by the likes of 3DGolf to a much more flexible market where a group of you can get cheap flights to Murcia or Faro (even BA now offer excellent deals), stay in your own self-catering apartment or villa (would sir like a pool?), make your own tee time booking so that you get the times you actually want (and at a discount) and hire top quality clubs for the week to save the hassle (and cost) of transporting your own (fantastic unless you're one of the 1 in 50 who have properly customised clubs).

From my own experience, over the last ten years I've been on traditional golf holidays to Scotland (yes, it rained!), North Portugal and the Algarve, Murcia (several times), Almeria, Malaga, Marbella, San Roce & Almenara and the two holidays that stick out by far as being the most fun were both villa holidays (La Manga a few years ago and Eastern Algarve recently).

So, learning with the speed of a slouth on mogadon, in future I'll confine myself to booking my own cheap flights (preferably BA), perusing PackYourClubs.com for accommodation to suit my needs (if not my aspirations), using the likes of GolfSwitch.com for my discounted tee times and almost certainly looking to pick up a quality set of hire clubs at the airport on arrival.

Now, where to go????????
