Golfbreaks is offering 1 night B&B with two rounds, Montgomerie and Roman for £89 to £109, depending on date, in February.
Everyone wants to play the 2010 course, but according to reports I have, they will be disappointed. The course was conceived specifically for the Ryder Cup, and is too difficult for most people and as a result, not that enjoyable. The Montgomerie on the other hand has excellent reports. I am therefore confused, not having played either....yet. Does anyone have experience of either course? I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks

Hi Alan
I have played both Montgomerie and Roman Road twice over recent years. They are both decent courses although I consider RR to be the better of the two. Both are quite long walks - use of a buggy is down to personal preference as you cannot take them on to the fairways. The deal that you/Ian highlight sounds a good one, although do be aware that the clubhouse/hotel is very expensive for extras such as drinks/snacks etc. Enjoy!

 Hi Alan,
I played at the Celtic Manor resort, back in 2001 we stayed overnight in the hotel, and played 2 rounds of golf.
The first was on the old Wentwood Hills course, which they redesigned and is now the 20-10 course, that was a challenge then,a typical American design with a lot of water in play, not for the faint hearted golfer.
I remember plenty of 6's and 7's on my card,+other funny numbers.
Like you I have heard that the new layout is tough and too much of a challenge for the average golfer, but I won't knock it until I have tried it.
We played the Montgomerie course as well and that was very good.it has some interesting holes, and much fairer and quite a bit shorter, although it still made you think about your game,it rewarded good shots, and at the same time could bite back with any mistakes, club selection was the key to a good score.
The greens where very good loads of undulations and fast,I did enjoy this course.
They used to accept the national 2 fore 1 vouchers,we used these to make the golf package cheaper that was a bonus.
The prices in the hotel where very expensive,as Roger has said,so beware!!!!!!
We where going to have a meal in the hotel on the Sunday night until we saw the price's.So we tried to find a local pub to get dinner that night, the only thing was they all stopped serving food about 8.30p.m.We ended up in Newport and the only place open was a Chinese,in some back street.
We had a meal there and it went down a treat,we came out of there quite happy considering.
Celtic Manor is on my hit list to play again if something comes up on the site.

have played the roman road and monty course's back in august, would rate the roman road above the monty.

as for the 2010, played in november, holes 1 - 11 fairly boring and a part from the bunkers/mounding featureless flat wide tracks, from 12 to 18 the holes are much more interesting, and the last 5 have plenty of natural features.
the short up hill 15th par 4, is worth taking the tiger route but only if the group in front  call you up so they can spot where your ball has landed.
sadly the ladies tee does not allow for any other shot except for following the actual dog leg, as the direct line is completely blocked out for them.

worth playing on the hotel special offers, ours was £135 sunday stay, with round on the roman road as well.
