Whenever I've bought a box of 12 balls, there are 3 x No1, 3 x No2, 3 x No3 & 3 x No4 in it, but is there any relevance to the number on a ball, or are they numbered so you can play with others all using the same ball?

Yep, you are correct
BUT the rules of golf state that you should:
a) be able to identify your ball - saying it's a Nike no. 1 is not enough - unsurprisingly Nike have made lots of them!
b) declare your ball to your playing partners before starting (and if you change your ball).
Therefore, if your ball doesn't already have an identifying mark on it (eg a logo which you wouldn't expect to find on the course you are playing) you should add your own mark (anything to to enable you to categorically state "this is my ball" when you find it in the rough; saying "it's white it must be mine..." is not good enough)

That makes sense, thanks
Next I need to get my head around this Stableford scoring system then I might actually beat mybrother when I play him, as we simply play stroke for stroke, and he's been playing for years compared to my 1! At the moment I'm content on winning 2 holes out of 18
