Hi all,
Hope you are all well?
Just thought I would drop a note to say Hi and a little about myself.
I already play Cricket, and used to play Hockey.
Now the golf idea started when a mate took me down to the driving range, and I was hitting a driver 3 out of 5 reasonable straight or with a slight 10 yard or so fade(left to right). the ball was consistently going 240 yds.
i also managed to get within 10 - 15 yards with a 7 iron of the target we were both aiming at.
So I figured I would give it a go, I took a trip up to the local golf club with the missus and we should have our first lesson tomorrow. then we will see where that takes us.
A couple of questions,
1) I hit the ball reasonably hard/far in all similar sports, how far is a long drive in golf
2) What is a good score for a beginner?
3) any other useful info (golf related please)?
Cheers and happy golfin
Steve

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the TSG community!
Good questions....heres my thoughts:
a) The average beginner would probably only hit a drive 170 - 190 yards (So your doing well!)
b) A good score would be 110 - 120 but this should drop to around the 100 mark fairly quickly
c) Concentrate your ball striking rather than distance & scores right now - distance will come in time!
Hope that helps....

Hi Ian,
thanks for the welcome, Ive been told that as i was hitting on the range as well with a proper ball it will probably carry further, so im not trying to hit the ball hard. I am concentrating on hitting i, I naturally tend to hit balls hard in any sport anyway so have learned that timing and patience are key.
Hoping as time progresses though and I get to used to the swing that my drives will carry a fair distance acurately.
hopefully if any of you guys are around north wales I will be able to get out for a game with you when I have all the gear(and hopefully some idea).
Cheers

Hi Steve,
in answer to part 3) of your first post, the 2nd most important part of playing golf is putting and short game,
the most important part is ENJOYing it no matter how we play.
Good luck with the lesson, Greg.

Thanks Greg,
yeah we are taking it up to both learn together so although we may start of with different ability levels we should level out with handicaps as well.
I am really looking forward to getting out there and playing a round to see how i do, im not know for my touch so my big hitting may have to compensate for that in a I get to the or around the green quicker and then everyone else catches up whilst i am still figuring things out.

Hi Steve,
If I could give you one piece of advise it would try and get the idea of 'hitting' the ball out of your head. You should be using your body to swing the golf club, rather than trying to hit the ball with your arms. I have a tendency to go this way too... Have a look at this video, hopefully it will help you start off in the right way!

Hi all,
well we had our first lesson yesterday, the club has even let us borrow a club each. (8 irons) to practice our swing.
we both did well, i was hitting the ball consitently and even got my head around the grip.
apparently my swing is nice and easy and has a good tempo which was the pros worst fear that i would be hitting very hard rather than smoothly.
I was hitting reasonably straight and a good distance with the 8 iron, no idea of the actual distance as there were no markers.
the missus did very well indeed she was hitting the ball most swings and connecting well with some which for her first time out was good to see.
we both enjoyed it and have already booked our next session in.
