Designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1975 Valderrama isa 6356 metres par 71 with no hole of less than championship quality but it can be fully enjoyed by players of all handicaps, thanks to the genius of Robert Trent Jones, Senior, whom many consider the leading golf architect of his day.
Lush tree lined fairways and immaculate elevated greens give this course the recognition it so deserves. All shots need accuracy and good distance judgment and the strategic difficult, omnipresent trees, the size of the bunkers and a few water hazards keep the player constantly on his wits for every stroke. The pressure is made worse when it comes to reading the greens. Don't bother about playing to your handicap, as even the top champions find making par a tough enough challenge at Valderrama.
The 17th hole on Valderrama is named 'Las Gabiones'. It is also the most talked about hole on the course. Remodelled by Seve Ballesteros and measuring 455 metres from the Championship tees, it has been the scene of many dramatic moments during the Ryder Cup, and in the World Championship events.
