Hidden Gem

Tucked away in Chigwell, a very nice members course. No rain for weeks meant fairways were very dry, greens were in excellent nick but slower than expected. Well established layout with plenty to catch out the misplaced shot. Worth playing but £50 midweek green fee probably a bit higher than you’d expect to pay compared with other nearby clubs.

Essex gem

Good round today on a good course that is often overlooked.

This would be a good course to have as a TSG partner club.

worth playing

chigwell is a lovely little parkland course set just a few miles from central london although you would never realise this once your out on the course, although it seems to be tight in places the reality is once you play you realise it's quite open and rewards well placed shots.
we were a bit unlucky to play on a frosty morning which hampered the first couple of holes but once this burnt off the course became a lovely course to play with just enough elevation changes and nice greens to make it a test.
Was expecting the reception to be not the greatest and a bit stuck up but couldn't be more wrong everyone we met both in the clubhouse and on the course were helpful, polite and friendly. practice facilities are there including a short game area although did not use them so can't really comment on them.
The only downside I would say is the price, we paid a winter rate of £25 although the usual rate of £45 is a bit steep to me

Visitors most Welcome

Chigwell is a members' club which used to be virtually impossible to play, unless you were invited by a member. Perhaps it is a sign of current times that rules have now been relaxed - visitors are very welcome and past requirements to show a handicap certificate no longer apply. The midweek green fee of £44 is on the high side, but my Open Faiways card was accepted without any problem, making this an excellent value round of golf, at a time when it seemed we had the course to ourselves. Staff here were all friendly - on the phone when I made the booking and also in the Pro shop.

I had not played here before but, on a hot sunny day and after so much rain for the past few weeks, I doubt the course has ever looked better. Great looking fairways were still quite soft, so not much run on the ball, but this is not a long course. Most holes are tree-lined, so if you're wide from the tee, you'll probably have to hit a low recovery shot to get back in play. If you do find the fairway, some holes have good uphill/downhill approaches (15th is memorable), but the sloping lies will make you think. The greens are quite small targets, but are very smooth and fast running.

The course is very attractive and surrounded by large properties which may be a distraction how ever you're playing!

Only one minor criticism - several holes have bushes/trees in front of the tee, which you have to hit over. This does not present too much problem but, being in full leaf and obviously growing fast this year, it is off-putting if you can't see the fairway you're aiming at - especially if you don't know the course.....some cutting back is required.

I shall look forward to playing at Chigwell again...

Interesting and Challenging

This was a good day weatherwise, the course appeared well maintained if a little squishy and soft in places (after a day's rain) so not a great deal of run on the fairways. Rough cut fairly and some interesting holes, tree-lined but deceptively open (most holes).

It would be good to come back in the summer and see if I could remember how to play the holes... quite a lot of undulations and often needs an extra club to get to the target...

Nice to walk this course some spectacular country houses on view around the course boundary.

Worth the trip andwould recommend - although it may not suit everybody..

Fantastic Course

What a great course, very interesting design a lot of shots your feet are higher or lower than the ball, greens are hard to read so quite a few 3 putts on card. Not as tight as people say but that might because of time of year.

Loved this course.

A very good course with some testing greens. Make sure your putting is up to scratch as it easy to run past the hole by quite a way. If it is like this now, I dread to think how fast they will be in summer. Especially if we have a prolonged dry spell.
