A fair but challenging links course. I played the Shire & Links combination of holes; the combination used by most visiting societies and for championship play. We played it as an Open Seniors Competition.
Played in March 2017; in benign windy conditions; the course was in excellent condition; whilst other courses were suffering the ravages of a wet winter the course was dry, fairways were 'lush' and receptive and the greens were dry but a little slow of pace. Difficult to get to grips with.
The course played longer than expected with approaches often coming up short of the greens; reflected by the fact that I failed to hit any GIR.
It is a very level course to walk. The greens and fairways were littered with substantial, but beautiful looking, bunkers. On the day my driving was good to excellent with one exception into the long rough. If you get into the rough get back to fairway asap, take the loss of distance over the hail-Mary recovery attempt.
Despite getting excellent advice from my two playing partners who had played Princes numerous times, indeed one is a member of neighbouring Royal St Georges; my score was 10 shots worse than I had 'budgeted' for, given it was an open seniors competition' played on a course I had not played before. This was disappointing because most of this excess was due to a combination of poor fairway play on the day [normally one of my good points] and failing to find any of the par 3 greens, rather that poor driving.
I hope to get the chance to play here again in the not too distant future; especially to see whether my new local knowledge of the course is of any use.
The competition entry fee was £50 including coffee on arrival; 18 holes and a one course post-match hot meal. However, I wouldn't want to pay more than that to play it again.
