It is not often that Mr L. invites me to join him to play golf at his club. So I was very excited, also I was trying out my 3 new clubs: a hybrid & 2 wedges.
Wyke Green is a very pleasant parkland course built on the former estate of the Earl of Jersey, but now belongs to the Members. Not far from central London, Heathrow airport, so one is surrounded in the distance by roads, trains and planes but not obstructive or distracting as the many old trees block out what could be distractions.
The fairways are wide and very well kept, not many divots, 1st & 2nd cut quite short, numerous bunkers, some quite deep, some huge, but all filled with lovely sand and my new wedge works magic... All the bunkers made this course very interesting to play and I believe a 2nd or 3rd visit will certainly help to improve the score.
Water only comes into play on the 2nd hole in the form of a brook that runs diagonally and again, it should be easier to play this hole a 2nd time around.
The greens are excellent, attractive shape, well guarded.
Good layout on the whole, but there is one point where I always get confused as to where to go next....
Atractive wooden tea hut with tables, chairs & red parasols by the 8th/10th holes but it was closed today as we teed off quite late, in fact we were the only 2 people on the golf course after 7.00pm but we finished the last 3 holes in near darkness.
Very well kept tee boxes, with ball washer, towel & bin at each Tee. Not a lot of difference in yardage between Yellow & Red Tees on many holes (Ladies SSS is 74).
Interesting Par 3, with a very tight approach. A very long one, 200+ yds...
My favourite holes:
The 8th, a Par 4/5, dog leg right, with mounds and lots of bunkers before & after the green. Quite vicious really, but a lot of fun to play and this is where my new wedges came in very useful.
The 17th: Par 3, uphill a little, guarded by a bunker the width of the green and 2 more bunkers at the back.
The 18th, Par 4/5: raised tee box, wide fairway, bunkers in the right places, one can see the Clubhouse in the distance. It was getting very dark as we finished play, could just about see my bright yellow ball, but it was my best hole.
Well stocked Pro shop, friendly staff.
Nice big clubhouse, very busy on a Friday night (a Greek theme.., some men playing poker etc...), a large patio terrace overlooking practice putting green and the 1st tee in the distance. There is a lovely painting hanging in one of the bar, depicting a view of hole 6th or 11th ? in the springtime, when all the bluebells are out and it is truly spectacular. Go and play in the Spring and you will see for yourself.
Open driving range. Practice net by 1st tee.
Large Car Park with "In" "Out" barrier for security.
A very pleasant place to have a round of golf, and a course one would want to return to better the score.
Thanks Mr L. and looking forward to the next time, yes I would like another invite.......
Till then.
