DESCRIPTION:

Coombe Wood Golf Club, located in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, is a picturesque and well-maintained parkland course that offers a challenging yet enjoyable round for golfers of all abilities. Established in 1904, the 18-hole course measures just under 6,000 yards with a par of 68. Despite its relatively short length, Coombe Wood’s narrow fairways, mature trees, and well-placed bunkers require accuracy and strategic play. The signature par-3 12th hole is a highlight, with its elevated tee offering stunning views of the surrounding area. The course’s rolling terrain adds to the challenge, with several blind shots and sloping greens providing a test for even the most experienced golfers. Situated near the A3 and only a short drive from central London, Coombe Wood is a popular choice for city dwellers looking to escape to a tranquil setting. The welcoming clubhouse offers excellent food and drink, making it the perfect place to unwind after a round. Coombe Wood Golf Club is ideal for those seeking a traditional yet challenging course within easy reach of London.

Lovely Short Course

This a course that could easily be described as a hidden gem, especially as once you're out on the course you can easily forget how close you are to London. The course isn't the biggest you'll ever play, 5100 yards from the yellows, but you'll probably get to use a far wider choice of clubs from the tee than at most courses.

There are a few holes which are probably a little too close to each other, for example the 10th green which is sandwiched between the 1st and 7th tees, but overall the course is a very pleasant walk with some lovely holes. Most of the par 4's, and the one par 5, have fairly generous fairways, so this is a course that can be enjoyed by all handicaps. The lower handicappers would probably murder the course though.

The round started with a very pleasant welcome in the pro shop, and he was kind enough to give me a map of the course. I'd have probably found my way around without the map, but there are a couple of holes where the next tee isn't especially obvious.

As for the condition, I was surprised at just how good the fairways and greens were given that I played it in mid-October.

Locked in a time warp, weird layout.......not what I was expected

Coombe Wood is situated in a private road where millionnaire's houses are numerous & quite beautiful, so I was expected a "smart" golf course, but I was disappointed.

The whole place is very quiet, hardly see a soul, one has to ring a bell to get in, the Pro Shop is at the back of the building, the Pro was pleasant enough. The Clubhouse was deserted, one could get a coffee (actually very nice) from a machine as no one behind the bar yet (9.30am)

The Ladies changing rooms relegated to one side with an akward key pad, the Mens in a good position with a modern keypad..

Coombe Wood Golf Club is well over hundred years, no idea who designed it, not a very long course, parkland, but I found it an extremely weird layout, badly signed posted to next Tee, but signage became apparent later on. There are 10 holes on one side of the private road, car park adjacent, & the last 8 holes are the oher side. So is a nice practice putting green.

A tee box behind a green, some criss crossed holes and all the tee boxes numbers were absent. I believe it is in the process of changing some holes, maybe the layout... no course planner was available, the only guidance was the tiny map at the back of the score card which got very, very wet during the incomplete round. We did 12 holes in the rain, the fairways were very wet, muddy in places, the greens had standing water.

It was easy to play the wrong hole or even the wrong green (yes we did!). Dangerous also, as a pitching practice area (could be a driving range)is aiming at the fairway (hole 9, I think), and one has to wait or duck, it can spoil one's concentration & the flow of the game, also it makes it difficult to find one's ball & it is dangerous....

There were some coloured yardage markers in the middle of the fairways, usual 100/150/200 yards.

There were 1 or 2 interesting holes, a Par 3 (hole 8), with a blind tee shot over a thick edge, no idea where the flag was.

We did not complete our round, went in for a change of clothes, a drink & some food which was tasty and reasonably priced. The Bar staff now present (2.00pm) was pleasant.

There are some lovely views & mature trees in this suburban golf course, Kingston upon Thames is down the road, it could be very pleasant course/club but it needs good shake up & changes, needs to make people feel welcome. I must admit the new bridge leading to the enrance is rather nice so is the terrace outside the Club house with Kingston in the distance.

Yes, it was a free round to get people 's views, so the above is my description, feeling of the place etc...maybe someone will take notice & invite me back when changes has been made or will I get barred for ever for telling what I saw on Friday 14th of December 2012.

Once is enough

Played at this course on Friday 14th December and the weather was really bad, so i can only comment on the first 10 holes of this course.

Let me start upon my arrival. Club house was dead and was only office staff there and they was point blank rude. They had a coffee machine as the bar/kitchen did not open until 11.
Some members come in, we said good morning and we was blanked, they then made some comments about us being there, not to us but loud enough for us to hear.

Off to the first Tee:... It was an ok course and considering the rain the greens played well until the water took over and created puddles.

However its badly laid out with no information on the tees of the hole, no yard markers on the course and what can only be called "Stupid" tee position.... a number of tees played blind first shots but with no post or indication as to there you should be playing.

They also had a driving range that played across two fairways, meaning on one hole i had to look at 6 balls before finding mine and then to rub it in i was nearly hit.

Needless to say i am glad this was a free round of golf and i do not recommend visiting and i will NEVER be going back
