Excellent: Recommended

The High Course at Moor Park is an excellent golfing experience and challenge. It is a conventionally structured par 72 championship standard course. Played in March 2017; the High Course was a bit damp here and there in the rough areas; but the fairways and greens were in excellent condition. The greens were close cut, firm and fast and were mostly surrounded by deep'ish bunkers positioned so as to make running up the ball onto the greens somewhat difficult. The fairways are also protected by an abundance of bunkers and the many doglegs make driving accuracy challenging.
The course contains a number of changes in elevation with many uphill approaches to the greens. However the walking of the course is not overly difficult.
I observed that at one time there were more green staff working on one hole than are employed by my club Cherry Lodge even allowing for the fact that there are two courses at Moor Park.
The published 'summertime' green fees for the High Course is £90 before 2:30pm and £65 after 2:30pm. It is £45 with a County Card.
By entering an Open Seniors Competition I was able to play the course for £50 inclusive of coffee/bacon roll on arrival and a 2 course meal after the match. This was an excellent VFM way to get to play one of England's top ranked courses.
The clubhouse is a magnificently sized and decorated mansion . Staff, competition and pro-shop service was excellent. An example of this was that one of the competitors got a hole in one and there was a framed certificate to that fact presented to him during the post match prize giving ceremony.
Play it if you get the chance.

High course proves golfing high

We could have played the West course as a fourball today but had to split into 2 two-balls to play the High Course. It was worth it as this proved a high point on my M25 tour in more ways than one. Tight fairways required long hits off the whites but the first cut was reasonable and I didn't lose a ball - except at the quirky 11th where I'd play 5-iron,3-iron if I was playing it again: definitely no longer than a rescue club off the tee.

Stunning Palladian clubhouse with amazing internal decor worth a visit in itself and surprisingly good value food in the bar.
