Nice course. Feeling good

Great course. Front nine. I thought was easy. Lol. It got tougher. Greens are fantastic. Tight course. If you fancy a challenge. Worth a day out.

fantastic course

Not the best clubhouse, but don't let that fool you.
We've played over 120 courses together, and this is one of the best (including Wentworth and all the big ones).
Great condition, some really tough holes. A great test, and the very best value for money at £15 a round.

greta course-best value for money ever

If you look at the clubhouse you'd think the course was going to not be good. But appearances are deceptive. We've played 120 courses together, including the most famous ones, and this is excellent.
In great condition, long off the back tees, and in great condition.
You must play this course.

Nice course, worth the effort

Enjoyed the course, and it's layout, and although the planes do go overhead continually, I really didn't find them a distraction. In fact, I quite liked looking up to see the underbelly of a plane, instead of worrying about seeing the underbelly of a bird!
The course itself has a variety of holes, from open to narrow, long to short. Pretty much, something for everyone.

Another little gem on the list to play again soon

The problem with choosing to play all year round is every course I play at the moment is obviously not going to be at its best. However this has held up well.

The odd sodden bit here and there, the odd green a little more spongy than others but all things considered I thought this was in great condition. I went in my fair share of bunkers and was surprised how well these had been kept and certainly no water in the ones I visited.

The course itself kind of leads you in to a false sense of security and around the turn just closes in on you and really starts to challenge. Straight is the key and course management steps up a gear. However all though I went a little left and right the 'odd' time I was never in to much trouble and other than the hole I wrongly tried to play through the trees and not just get out quickly my score was never overly affected. I think in the summer when these areas will be thicker it may not be the case though.

The practise facilities are pretty good. They have the hardest practise green I have ever seen!!! I like the fact there is a seperate chipping green as well.

What the club house lacks in style it makes up for in character and it felt more like sitting in my Nans lounge that a bar. I also liked the fact I could get a normal cup of coffee for a quid and not having to call it a grande cafe luko warmo for three times as much. I'm not one for glitz and glam. I hope they never change this.

Not my best round today and, not surprisingly, as the course closed in my shots increased but amazingly finished with the same ball, although I did loose a provisional. I really enjoyed the course and, to use what is fast becoming my favourite line, I can't wait to return later in the year.

Best new course I've played in ages

I wasn't expecting this course to be as good as it was. It's long, there's trouble everywhere and holes 5 - 15 are pretty relentless with narrow tree lined fairways.

One of the toughest courses I've ever played. But this is proper golf where the focus is on avoiding the high numbers and plotting your way round with irons rather than hitting greens in regulation.

Fairways were nice to play off and greens were very subtle, difficult to read, with lot of slopes near pins.

I played fairly well, shooting 99, which could have been better if I'd holed some putts. My stableford score of 30 was 4th out of 20 players. If my wheels were off, which they too often are, this would be a miserable place to play golf.

Being the sadist that I am, SES members can look forward to returning here the next time I'm organizer.

A challenge in any weather

Small clubhouse with a warm welcome. Ladies locker room very cosy. Course boggy, still recovering from recent bad spell of weather. Fantastic, challenging course. Each hole inviting you to play sensible shots down the middle and punishing anything else. Lots to think about. Stroke index 1 14th is a delight - stay right. I certainly will next time. Look forward to playing again in better weather.

Like threading a needle!

Pretty course, but very testing, you can hit good shots and still lose your ball! It's narrow especially the back 9.

I dont want to sound negative though because it is a lovely place to play. Just be prepared for a high number on your scorecard!!

A great day out, especially on a 241 for £15.

Matchplay with "Westwood".... well the battle of the "Wood"...

Yes, today we played matchplay with our very own "Westwood". So, this will be a REVIEW OF THE DAY, not the course as my previous review (9 May 2012) was descriptive enough to entice you to this lovely golf course.

Today the sun was shining, the air warm, no wind, the course was dry, the fairways attractive & well kept, the 1st cut a little heavy but did not venture there a lot, greens fast & true (am getting technical now). The course was fairly busy and we heard the cockerels at the
5th, 6th & 7th.... & the frogs were happy jumping in the pond at the 12th....

The highlight was brought on by Simon W. (5 hdcp) who suggested we do matchplay & also nearest the pin in all Par 3s (in two) with money rewards. We all agreed it was a great idea and we drew our pairs. "Westwood" and "Lockwood" were elected Captains. A valiant battle till the 15th when there was no return for my team (never mind Gary, next time we shall get the money!!!).

We had a fantastic time as the 4 personalities seem "to bond" very quickly and that was reflected in our after golf drink/chit-chat/photo taking/recipe exchange (yes), etc... Some photos on TSG.

A true social golf day, to be repeated very soon.

Thanks "Westie", Vince & Gary. Without TSG this day would not have been possible.

14th hole:

I cannot end this review without mentioning my favourite & most beautiful hole on the course, a real pleasure to play. Well, I played it to perfection till my Pitch shot onto the Green.... so will return as I am determined to Par this hole.

(Thanks Simon for the practice tips).

The End

I discovered another JEWEL in Surrey thanks to TSG

Another long review, but it needs to be so I can paint the whole picture, even on a wet, windy day.

SO PLEASE READ ON...

RUSPER is certainly a course everyone will want to return for many reasons:

1. Wonderful setting: a jewel (sapphire & diamonds)
2. Challenging holes for all abilities
3. Friendly/well stocked Pro shop
4. Pleasant Clubhouse with character, outside terrace, good selection of food served all day long
5. Welcoming atmosphere by the Pro, Janice Arnold, the members and the Clubhouse alike
6. All practice facilities are present
7. Very active Junior, Senior, Lady/Woman sections
8. Attractive Society packages
9. Very reasonable rates Monday to Thursday and Seniors
get preferred rates as well!!!!

As you arrive to the large Car Park, well laid out & as you walk to the Pro Shop, you know you are onto something special. An old but attractive & well kept wooden building (in keeping with the local Surrey surroundings, must have been a farm building) accommodates the Pro Shop, the Clubhouse with a large, bright lean-to, an attractive terrace under native trees, with lovely red parasols (not in use today though) & wooden tables/benches.

On one side here is the picturesque practice putting green (cherry tree in the middle), on the other side is the chipping/pitching, sand/bunker area. The driving range is by the car park, near the Pro shop.

The course was build (I assume on Surrey farmland) in 2
parts: the first 9s some 20 years ago and the last 9s some 10 years later (hence my sapphire & diamond).

You may think it is going to be an easy course, as you stand on the 1st Tee box (Par 4), but NO IT IS NOT. It needs careful course management and appropriate club selection.

The holes are varied, some open fairways tightening up, some very tight holes. Lots of water come into play (even more on a day like today, 9 May 2012) be it streams, ditches or ponds. Wild life is present as well. In fact each of the 18 holes has a water element.

Mix of parkland, woodland, flatish in places but many ups and downhills, wonderful matured native trees, sometimes in the way, bluebells at their best, even without sun. Very lush scenery all around, some wonderful views of the Surrey North Downs. If you walk the course, it will keep you fit.

One can hear the cockerels (4/5/6th holes)in the background (evidence of local farming, as there are some Farm Shops along the "B" road leading to the Golf Course).

Holes well presented, every one with a tough challenge, especially on a wet ground like today.

Good paths, covered in shells, leading to the following hole, good way finding. A few wooden and concrete sculptures dotted around, nice touch ( for the artistic golfers, well some of us are!!!!).

The greens were very interesting despite the recent rainfalls, only 1 was a little water logged in a corner.

Some greens were tiered and with nice ondulations. Must be a pleasure to chip and putt in good dry weather.

The Red Tee boxes are nicely placed, sometimes giving us Ladies/Women a little advantage as some of the red tees were set in forward of the ponds or streams. But this is only fair at it is very tough course (Red Tees PAR 74 - SSS 75). I have to write the technical stuff as well...

My favourite holes: 14th / 17th...

The 14th , Par 4, a delight for many reasons: TOUGH & SPECTACULAR, (Captain charity box awaits your donations at this hole). A tough start (well from the Yellow Tees), a spectacular finish by a lovely fast running stream feeding the pond on the right hand side of the green. The fairway is slopping the left & going fairly steeply to the green.

Tough climb to the 15th hole where a wooden bench awaits for you to admire the view, rest or picnic.

Must be a picture postcard on a sunny day.

The 17th, Par 3, one cannot see the pin from the Tee box as there is a mound in the way, so blind Tee shot from the Red Tees anyway.

The only drawback is the vicinity of Gatwick airport. But today, not too much of a problem: the WET & WINDY WEATHER was ! We were covered in mud (looked like we had rolled in it !!!!!) but if you ventured off the Fairways you must expect to get muddy under the present conditions. If only the little white ball would fly straight and keep on the fairways.

Saying that, I never lost a ball, I did not score brilliantly but had a great game and nice company.

So will return to play in a warm and sunny day to enjoy RUSPER at its best.

Sadly the end.....

(Must go and wash the muddy golf clothes & clubs).

Well worth a visit

Rusper is a nice course. The first few holes a fairly open but the more holes you play the tighter it becomes.

Greens very fast.

Well worth a visit at £20 on a Saturday using openfairways.

Rusper 1st Game of the year

Rusper is a very tough test and not best payed in the wet as you get no carry on the ball on what is already a long course.

I enjoy this type of course as you have to think about where to land the ball to give yourself a chance.

can;t wait to play it later in the year when the weather has dried the course out.
