An enjoyable, but undulating, parkland course!

Reigate Hill GC is a parkland style course on the outskirts of Reigate, Surrey. It is very close to the M25!

It is a members club!

The course is a par 72 from all tees, ie white, yellow and red! The yardages are 6,246, 5,993 and 5,676 respectively!

All tees play to the same indexes! The SSSs are 71,70 and 73 respectively!

There are 4 par 3s, 10 par 4s and 4 par 5s, the usual construct for a par 72!

The course was designed by David Williams!

*****

The course is a scenic undulating course!

Assessing it as though I started from the 1st, not the 14th, it opens with a sweeping downhill par 4, a significant change of elevation up to the 2nd tee and a steep uphill tee shot to a blind green; then meanders away from and around back to the 9th green in front of the clubhouse!

Part of the front 9 runs within sight and sound of the M25!

There is then a steep elevation change from the clubhouse through the car park up to the 10th tee! The holes then work around to the 13th green at the back of the clubhouse and then play away from the 14th tee to the side of the clubhouse and back to the 18th green below the clubhouse!

*****

The greens are generally large, some very large, with many changes in elevation and tricky putts! As we were playing a competition, many of the pin placements were in the most difficult spots on the greens!

My outturn putting stats were 30 putts, ie 8 singles, 8 x 2 putts and 2 x 3 putts! Only my birdie putt on the 2nd was of any length!

A very good outcome!

*****

The Par 3s

The four par 3s are a variety of challenges!

#2: a 140 yards uphill tee shot to a blind green! There is a row of 4 pot bunkers running below the front of the green! However there is an apron front left and I avoided the risk of the bunkers by running the tee shot in from the left! I managed to hole my 15 foot birdie putt!

#8: a 148 yards downhill tee shot to a multi level green! One pot bunker front left and 5 pot bunkers behind the green!

#12: a 206 yards downhill tee shot to an undulating sloping green! There are bunkers wide right and left!

#15: a level 144 yards tee shot to dogleg triple tiered green which runs around the lake which runs most of the left hand side of the green! There are 2 pot bunkers long of the green! A no shot hole for me!

My outturn par 3s stats were +1, ie a par, 1 birdie offsetting 2 bogeys! A 3 putts on the difficult 18th green (albeit wrongly ranked index 18), largely accountable! A better outturn on par 3s than I usually get!

*****

The Par 4s

#1: 335 yards, index 12, this is a short left to right sloping downhill tee shot, grassy hollows on the right hand side of the fairway! A water filled ditch runs across the fairway about 50 yards from the green! There are 2 bunkers front left and 1 bunker on the right of the green!

#4: 384 yards, index 2, a very difficult dogleg right, from a high teebox to a ridge, protected by 2 pot bunkers right of the fairway, followed by a blind downhill approach to a tricky slopey green, guarded by 2 left hand bunkers! A bogey is a great score here!

#5:

#6: 366 yards, index 8! An uphill tee shot up the right hand side of the fairway, to run it down to the centre/left of the fairway! There are 3 pot bunkers front left of a long slopey right to left green! A pushed drive into the rough, followed by a lay-up into a bunker, led to a quadruple bogey, my worst hole of the day! Inexplicable play! A bogey is a great score on this hole!

#9:

#10:

#13:

#16:

#17:

#18:

My outturn par 4s stats were +11, or +4 above my shots for the par 4s! Most of the 'excess' par 4 shots were due to a quadruple bogey on the 8th hole, a shot hole, ie my intended lay up shot over a tall tree found a bunker short of the green but a long way from the pin! My approach from off the green didn't make it up to the upper level and I ended up off the green about 50 feet below left of the pin! A blip in the overall context of the round!

The most positive aspect was my putting stats which were 16 putts, ie 5 single and 5 two putts!

*****

The Par 5s

The par 5s are the 3rd, 7th, 11th and 14th. They are indexes 6, 4, 3 and 1 respectively, reflecting their difficulty!

#3: 540 yards, index 6, an uphill tee shot to a plateau, avoiding a blind right side bunker, a lay up short of a pair of pot bunkers on the left, and an approach into a 'sunken' multi tier green with a bank on the left assisting with running on! Longer hitters can reach in two!

#7: 502 yards, index 4, a hole with a choice of two fairways to play to either side of a row of trees in the centre of the hole! I chose to play to the left hand fairway, reached in regulation, got a 2 putt par, missing a 15 foot birdie opportunity! The bigger hitters generally go down the right hand fairway but this seemed to be the riskier line! A lovely hole!

#11: 548 yards, index 3. An uphill drive up towards the access road entering the course, severe slope right to left down to 3 pot bunkers left, followed by a lay up and approach to a raised green with a severe fall off the left of the green to either a pot bunker or grassy hollow! While attempting to run my 2nd shot down the right side of the fairway I found the only bunker (blind) between the road and the green! My fault for not checking my course planner before making my shot! A bogey was a good outcome due to a very good up and down!

#14: 519 yards, index 1, comprises a tee shot from high down to a fairway which runs alongside and around a lake on the left! OOB awaits a pushed drive right, plus a pot bunker, and OOB also awaits a hooked/pulled drive left! The green is 32 yards wide and between 13 and 19 yards deep! The degree of difficulty depends on the pin placement! There is a bail out area to the right of the green! I was left with an approach shot across the corner of the lake! Given that it was only my 3rd shot of the day, the fairway was wet and the atmosphere heavy, I took more club to ensure that I carried the water! Unfortunately I hit it long and it kicked off the back bank into the bunker! Too cautious! A bogey would have been a great score but a double bogey was OK!

My outturn par 5s stats were +5, a par, bogey and 2 double bogeys!

All of the par 5s are shot holes so I was effectively +1 too many! This was due to taking 2 shots to get out of the wet 14th bunker, my first hole of the day! I hit too much club into the green to make sure I carried the water!

Visitors Green Fees
Midweek green fees during the summer months are £29.00.

I entered their annual Seniors Pairs open competition! The entry fee was £39.50, which included coffee, 18 holes, a two course meal, coffee and prizes! Pretty good vfm!

*****

The competition was a betterball Stableford pairs! Shotgun start! We started from the 14th tee!

My partner Ken Richardson and I scored 42pts! Only just outside of the prizes!
However Ken arrived late and missed the first two holes! I only managed to get 3 points for our opening so our teams potential to gain one or two more points was missed!

*****

The welcome and hospitality provided by the pro staff, the bar and catering staff and especially the members was excellent!

Each of the 4 balls had one pair which included a Reigate Hill member, which was a great help navigating the course for the first time!

*****

My overall assessment is that this is a very enjoyable challenge and a very good venue for a society get together! However I would very much prefer to play it starting from the 1st tee next time to get a better feel of the rhythm of the course! Also the 1st is an easier starting hole than the index 1 par 5 14th with its approach over water to the green!

Gentle

In fantastic condition with excellent difficult to read greens, 3 or 4 spectacular holes and a couple of dull holes but a good not too long course. Will certainly get back to one day.

Nice course

2 nets by first tee, and putting green enough practice for me.
Course in good condition for time of year, well worth the visit.

Good track

Having read recent reviews, I was expecting something exactly opposite to what I found.

Greens were excellent and made us all think a little more, Fairways in good condition, tee boxes pretty well cared for and rough was what it is supposed to be, penal. If you smash a long drive and it keeps going in the rough, change your game plan. And the bunkers, which I had expected to be stony and bare - well they were not the best in the world, but by a wide margin not the worst.

Could have done with another body to ensure the bar was served in a timely fashion, but overall the clubhouse was pretty reasonable (if extortionate).

If the TSG Open is there next year, count me in.

(The only defense against poor reviews would be based on my club this year, which a couple of months ago was atrocious, now is excellent)

Great variety - but you may want a cart

I really enjoyed this course. Most of the other players in the tournament hired a buggy, but I walked it. I prefer it that way, but if you don't do a small upward incline pulling clubs or don't have an electric trolley you too may want a buggy. The course was in great nick. I thought it had lots of variety and good options for course management decisions.

Excellent little course

This is a very nice little course...not too long but sloping fairways make positioning of tee shots quite important.

The greens were in immaculate condition but were very tricky to read...for me at least. I didnt putt particularly badly, but 5x3-putts put paid to a much better score.

Bunkers were OK, no more, and a soft top belied a hard crust an inch or so below, so a deft touch is req'd. It is quite a hilly course, so carrying can be a bit of a problem for older golfers, an electric trolley being a must.

There are some very memorable holes on this course, the par 5 SI1, which skirts a lake and a couple of beautiful par 3's with elevated tees.

The clubhouse bar and facilities are excellent as was the food, and staff are extremely welcoming I would recommend this course to anyone, and look forward to playing it again.

Great course, challenging greens

A nice course that requires good course management and knowing how far you hit your clubs.

Greens were great, not too fast and not too slow. Second cut was punishing

Challenging Parkland

Easily accessible from the M25, this is a maturing parkland course, well-desiged to fit the local topography (i.e. it is more than a bit hilly - with elevation changes that exercise legs and lungs).

Greens were moderately fast, genuinely tricky - some hidden borrows on most - so it all depends where the flags are on the day.

Some repair work is ongoing although not a lot of GUR came into play. Fairways - nicely cut and lots of roll. Semi rough just enough to obscure a ball and of course trees abound.

Critique - bunkers were sand-sparse, and there was one temporary tee (almost impossible to take a tee, so it was a good balancing act to place ball, on tee and swing before it fell off...)

On the plus side - interesting holes (mostly different and feature rich). Hazards cleverly-placed around greens so best to go with someone who knows the course to ensure the best approach to the flag.

Clubhouse hospitality - warm and engaging... food remains good quality, Pro shop is adequately well-stocked.

Be advised that the approach road from main road to club house does cut through the course, up hill, down dale, and there are few passing places on the single track road.. watch out for golfers left and right as indicated by signs.

On course signage is clear enough so you won't get lost here.

All in all - value for money and well worth the return trip...

Good layout but needs some TLC!

I don't have much more to add to Gary Harvey's review. As you drive in you feel you are entering a quality club. There is a large practice area for driving, putting etc but it is for members only, visitors are not allowed to use. Visitors can use another putting green near the clubhouse and two nets.

Pro shop staff friendly.

Course layout is very good, but greens spiked and covered in a sandy dressing. Bunkers were often GUR and full of stones and rubble.

We played as a Social Golfer and paid £15. At this rate I can't complain. Check price and course condition before you play.

Such a shame

I thought long and hard about membership here. Such a great layout and sone great views. Probably my favourite par 3 on the 12th and a great 14th oxfordshire esque par 5.
The pro is very friendly.
However....
The worst greens I have had the misfortune to play. Apparently they have a disease but other green keepers agree that it doesnt stop rollers, lawnmowers or top dressing to be used.
Most bunkers either g.u.r. or full of cheap grey soiley rubbish and stones.
Tee boxes were also strangers to a lawnmower.
I base these views on 4 visits in May. The last included the rudest group of members I have experienced.

The clubhouse is nice. But theyll be a pikey wedding on so when you can hear again after the M25 noise...youll hear partyers or drunk cheers. And have to squash into the remaining side bar.

The TSG event will be a good day as they always are...but the course will let down the ocassion.

A top course in embarassing condition

Well worth a visit

An attractive course close to the M25. Motorway traffic can be heard on some holes on front 9 but back 9 is away from all noise. There is an attractive large lake not far from clubhouse but only comes into play on one par 5 hole. A good mix of varied holes to challenge all standards of player. Friendly staff in the clubhouse.

Enjoyable but tough, quite hilly in places & the M25.......

This was a very special day at Reigate Hill, an invite from a Member, our very own TSGer Virginija Z. to the Ladies day (7th August 2014). All done in grand style on a great but tough course, a little spoilt at times by the closeness of the M25, some holes are parallel to this notorious motorway, so can be rather noisy. Apart from that the views of the surroundings countryside are superb. Quite a hilly course where a good pair of legs and lungs are an asset indeed.

It all started with the usual registration, coffee/bacon roll, sale of raffle ticket for the Captain's Charity etc.

Then off we went to play this lovely course that is really interesting as so much variety, lots of sloping lies, raised tee to lovely downhill fairways and excellent greens. Some ditches come into play on several holes and there is a lake that has to be negotiated on 2 holes. Lots of bunkers with nice soft sand. A well maintained members course.

As is customary with a Lady's golf day, we had Pimms & nibbles at half way and a delicious lunch served at the end of the pleasant round on a rather hot summer's day. Then followed the prizes presentation.

I enjoyed the course and will return as I was given a voucher (valid till 30.6.2015) for a complimentary round with 3 guest @ special rates, so watch the games page as will post a game when my busy life permits.

There was a favourite hole, I think it was a Par 3 downhill from a raised Tee, probably the 13th hole, a large ditch crossing the fairway and 4 bunkers surrounding the green sloping back.

Lovely, large and airy clubhouse with a terrace overlooking the course. Friendly staff.

Nice welcome on the Proshop, well appointed.

Ladies changing rooms with all the goodies one needs.

Big Car park and the driving range is away from the Clubhouse, in fact as you drive in it is on the right, and members have free range balls... A large putting green in front of the terrace.

That is all I can remember as it was nearly 8 weeks ago...

Lovely course

There are lots of good things about Reigate Hill. The clubhouse is very pleasant, the course enjoyable with a number of really good holes, and the greens, fairways and tees are all in a great condition. The one downside is probably the noise from the M25, which runs along one side of the course.

The fairways are generally fairly open, but finding some of them might prove tricky with big slopes on a few. It might just be me having a bad day, but reading some of the slopes on the greens may prove difficult too.

Well worth playing.

G.U.R.

Fairways and greens were good, some nice holes especially the downhill par 3's , one drawback though, lots of G.U.R. on virtually every hole in what used to be bunkers, with big mounds of earth in them...therefore not worth £34 green fee.

Lovely if short golf course, VERY worth playing

We turned up on a sunny Day in May, after a few days of rain. This meant the course was in as close to perfect condition as possible, the greens were holding very well due to the rain I assume. Most of the greens were in very good condition and played at a decent speed, (some seemed a little slower than others though).
It's a fairly short course, so a lot of approach shots with wedges to 8 iron, but quite a few places that will bite you if you stray off line.
The worst bit about this course is the state of parts of the driveway into the club. The clubhouse and staff were as good as you could ask for, although the food is very expensive, £4.25 for a small sausage baguette and £7.50 for a breakfast. I didn't use any practice facilities, so put a 3 for neutral.

A Good Test.......

Played here on the Epping Bandits v South East Swing Society Cup and enjoyed the course a lot! Every hole on the course has a different angle of approach and the course weaves/circles its way around the terrain, meaning you are never far from the clubhouse. The greens were fair and true and the course is generally well maintained. If I had to pick any fault, it is that on holes 4 to 6 you are very close to the M25 which spoils the tranquillity a little. However, everyone in the shop was very friendly and I was even 'taxi'd' to my four-ball by one kind member after arriving late to my tee off, due to a traffic accident. All in all a good day out - I will happily return!

Mature Parkland, hillside course.

Easy to get to from J8 of the M25, this course is set on a series of hillsides and not much flat land is in evidence here. Take note this is a difficult walking course, up and down hills on most holes. Well designed and maintained, fairways were good and bouncy, greens were full of features (undulations abound) and the light rough conspired to hide the ball... a fair amount of hazards on this course mean that you do have to think your way around. Would benefit from knowing it better before expecting too much. Tricky in places - less tricky in others, some cleverly placed bunkers designed to trap the unwary.

Played in the heat so this was not an easy day out... I would guess that good scores are possible (the more you know it).

Clubhouse and staff were welcoming and service was with a smile...

There were a couple of holes where the next tee was not obvious so it could be possible to go a bit wrong, but all in all a good challenge, some good views for those that enjoy rolling hills, but it is adjacent to the M25 and though the view isn't spoiled there is a bit of noise in some parts of the course.

Good if you are local, or passing by... and well worth the visit. Seems to be a trend with course in Surrey/Sussex, undulations, hills and bunkers aplenty.
