« They are moving the earth ! «

Another course revisited as Goodwood (Downs course) was cancelled by Organisers, Guildford had no Tee times available till 18.00hrs. So we settled for Sutton Green

A pleasant course , well maintained, lots of water features but something about the Greens which were in great condition : every 4 of us missed the hole by a hairline ! which made me think the « ironing «  had not been done as it happened too many times ....and we are not bad putters.

As you play the 8th, there are now huge mounds of fresh earth . What the hell is going on? Building new houses ? No, only rebuilding a new Tee for the Men & lots of mature trees to be planted , but not actually sure which hole (10th or 11th) it will be as it did not affect our play.

A pleasant round with a new TSG Member , Rick O. whom I think liked the company of Tim J., Sue M.and myself. We gave him a warm welcome and he was friendly.

Usual rules applied under the Covid-19 restrictions and we all managed to keep our distances and pull the little device up to retrieve the golf ball from the hole when the ball did eventually fall in !!!

Attractive, well designed, fantastic condition & warm welcome....

A private road that can be easily missed if you follow your GPS advice, but as you turn into the private drive you are going to find a superb golf course. A lovely appearance, a well laid out car park with shade as well, a good looking Clubhouse, the feeling is of a happy place where the members make you feel welcome.

The course is only 21 years old (Dame Laura Davies was a co-designer), but very mature with oak, pine & other trees in an attractive & peaceful part of Surrey between Woking and Guildford.

A great variety of holes offering challenges for all levels of golfing abilities, water comes into play on 9 or more holes, some of the carries are quite long. The fairways are excellent, so are the greens (none of them are flat, some steep tiers and refined undulations). A real pleasure to putt. Fairways and greenside bunkers are numerous, some were a little compacted for my liking but manageable. A very flowing walk between the holes, even if sometimes long, well sign posted, excellent tee boxes, well presented with the ball washers, towels, broken tees collectors etc...

2 favourite holes:

The 9th, Par 4 (I think it is the signature hole), slight dog leg right with a big & a small lake on the righthand side, a fairly large and raised green sloping to the left. Just at the back of the green is the newly erected half way hut, inaugurated by the 2015 Lady Captain, Pam Mace, with whom I played today, a bubbly & excellent golfer who had many Pars today......We were a great team.

The 16th, Par 3, a very attractive & technical hole, although not long, the right club & shape must be used as water lurks on the lefthand side & the back.

Today, 30th June 2015 was very sunny, every hole was absolutely stunning: blue skies, dark green trees, fairways still of a vivid colour & the Greens in excellent conditions as there was a Competition the preceeding weekend.

Today was a special treat for me as it was a last minute & free invite to a Lady Friends /Guest Day by an ex Silvermere Lady golfer & friend (Dorte G.), now a very happy member at Sutton Green which has a limited number of Members thus assuring all the best facilities and conditions for them. I believe Sutton Green has reciprocical arrangements with several other clubs.

The Ladies changing room facility was excellent too, with easy access from 2 sides.

The ProShop if well stocked and the Pro admirable in giving directions over the phone when one cannot find the concealed entrance to the golf club.

The Clubhouse is large, airy & sunny overlooking the finishing 18th hole, staff is welcoming. Large terraces outside too.

A very nice practice green, some nets and chipping area are present too.

We finished our Ladies Day with a light & pleasant lunch served with wine. Awaiting to see the official photos taken on the day.

A great day on a great course, I only wish it was on my doorstep.

Fast green for a this time of year

We were a group of 10 people and it was raining from time to time but the green stayed firm and fast. Little tricky playing the course first time but I will try it again later in summer.

Really nice course

I've played here 3 or 4 times now over the years, and each time I do I end up asking myself why I haven't played here more often. It's always been in good condition, and the holes are really nicely laid out.

Play well here and I imagine that there are good scores to be had, but there is plenty of water, rough and sand to punish the bad shots too.

From the 1st to the 19th, Sutton Green is a totally pleasurable experience.

Lovely course in good condition

Really nice course with plenty of challenges from long rough, trees and water. Very well maintained and the greens were great. Some tough holes for ladies though with some long carries and stroke indexes are the same as the men's making it tough to score well on some holes.

Beautiful Course: Recommended

This is a par 71 parkland course; well bunkered and with water on many holes. There are 5 par 3s; 9 par 4s and 5 par 5s; ie a good balance. It opens and closes with par 5s; Trouble awaits from the drive on several holes and the rough is lush, long and penal; most of the par 4s are short (ie less than 400 yards) but contain carries; bunkers, water or doglegs to be negotiated.
The greens were excellent condition and they contained tricky slopes to read/negotiate.

Hospitality was excellent.

An up to date course planner is now available following the completion of the course remodelling since my last visit. The revamp resulted in some indexing changes to the front nine.

Most of the par 3s were visually exciting and two had water to be negotiated. Only the 213 yard 11th had a bland look about the tee shot though the green was a challenge.

Sutton Green Golf Course

Sutton green golf course is a well run, fairy new club. The course is currently being lengthened and will soon play longer than currently advertised. The course is well thought out but fairly straight forward. Greens are well maintained and fairways well kept although they can get wet in winter.

PLEASANTLY SURPRISED

Sutton Green GC is situated between Guildford and Woking, with the classic courses of West Hill, Woking and Worplesdon not far away. It is a new club, established in 1994, but the maturity of some of the holes belies this. The course is very well maintained, the fairway sprinkler system really earning its keep this summer. Our 4ball averaged 35 points so it is not a difficult scoring course but there is a challenge of some sort on most of the holes. A most enjoyable visit, which I hope to repeat sooner rather than later. Clubhouse looked nice although didn't have chance to use it.

Well worth a trip...

... if you get the opportunity. I play here regularly with a member. It is not a public course.

Sutton Green has it all and you will want to return.

Lovely clubhouse facilities and friendly staff.

Practice facilities are restricted to nets and a large putting green but it does the job.
