Challenging course!

I have played Surbiton a few times now and it is always a tough track. There is a lot of work taking place at present and a number of trees are being uprooted and moved. However this does not detract from a great course that catches you out in many places. The greens had been sanded but were still very quick.

Once it dries out and the work has been finished this will be a great course and one I would fully recommend.

Cost me £25 green fee with a member.

Killer greens

Surbiton GC was one I have wanted to play for a long time, and I wasn't disappointed. It is a very picturesque course, with a nice variety of holes. The really difficult factor we all seemed to find was the greens. There were a lot of subtle borrows you just couldn't see, and a number of times the ball was diving right or left at the last moment, and often running 3-4 feet passed the holes! Needless to say, 3 putts were quite common in our group.
I was speaking to the new general manager in the bar after the round, and it seems the club had recently invested heavily in new drainage, and other course improvements.
I was lucky enough to get a free round, but scored the value for money as a 4, as the price I would have had to pay was £35.00 for a Sunday afternoon. Which was I think reasonable, given the quality of the course and amenities.
It definitely had a well manicured feel about it, and the new drainage work was evident.
Would definitely play here again, and hopefully improve on the putting scores!

An enjoyably challenging parkland course

Surbiton GC is a par 70 parkland course in Chessington Surrey. It is 6,056 yards from the white tees. There are 4 par 3s, 12 par 4s and 2 par 5s.

*****
The course is moderately undulating, with blind tee shots and approaches; some hedgerows in front of the tee boxes; moderate to large undulation greens, surrounded by challenging bunkers. As with all clubs at the moment the fairways were very brown, dry and fast. Greens and front aprons were well watered.

*****
The greens are large, undulating, variable paced, and tricky to read!

Update: 09/2019: my outturn putting stats were 35 putts, ie 3 singles, 13 doubles and 2 triples! OK but would have liked to be at least 3 lower!

*****
The fairways generally wide, many downhill slopes and a few with tee shots into uphill slopes!

09/2019 update: many of the fairways were in a poor dry and patchy condition! Good driving often resulted in bare bone dry lies!

*****
The par 3s

#4: 157 yards, index 7!

#11: 156 yards, index 12! A medium long uphill tee shot to high green with a high Bank to carry, with trouble down the right! Bogey is a good score!

#13: 124 yards, index 16! A moderate downhill tee shot to long snake like green! A choice needs to be made between a full high approach or a short pitch and run! A nice hole!

#15: 129 yards, index 14! A steep uphill tee shot to a high level green, carrying a large bunker front centre! Plays longer than the simple yardage!

Visitor summer green fees are £55 Mondays to Fridays; £35 with a County Card; or £35 on Sundays after 2pm. I and Brigitte Lockwood entered the clubs Mixed Open Stableford Competition in order to play
this course for the first time. Our entry fee of £39 each included coffee on arrival, 18 holes, a two course lunch and prizes. A great vfm way to play such an enjoyable course. Personally I think a £55 green fee is way overpriced.

I/we enjoyed our day enormously.

*****
Surbiton GC is only about 30 minutes drive from home. I very much hope to play it again very soon.

The club hospitality was excellent and catering fare was excellent.

*****
Brigitte and I achieved a betterball score of 37 points. The winning score was 43 points.

*****
We started our round from the 9th tee. On reflection I would have preferred to have started from the 1st.

Fantastic course and excellent quality all the way...

Surbiton is a course I have wanted to play for a long time as I drive past the brown Golf club sign many times, and I heard about its reputation etc. So today 1st July 2018, I had the opportunity to sample the delights of this course thanks to Michael H. who invited me to join him for a Mixed Open day.

A well established course (dating back 1895) whose design I like, very attractive & flowing, extremely well kept, some narrow fairways, plenty of mature * varied species of trees, sloping fairways, uphill * downhill holes with interesting dog legs, also worth mentioning some hedges to carry over on some holes, greens were fantastic with very subtle undulations, tiers, a pleasure to putt if you have the knack for reading or guessing the fall of the ball.

The SSS between Yellow & Red is 3, so a little tougher for the Ladies but manageable.

A traditional Clubhouse, very airy and nicely furnished with a large terrace with good quality wooden furniture over looking the 9th & 18th greens, the 1st & 10th tees, with a glimpse of the half way hut (always a sign that the golf cub thrives & is appreciated by its members & visitors).

Practice area, putting greens near the 9th/18th greens with some nets, another area which I didnt visit.

Lovely changing rooms for the Ladies.

Very friendly and nicely stocked Proshop.

A very large car park for the Visitors which is separate from that of the Members.

I shall take the 1st opportunity to play this course again as I found it very enjoyable even if my score was not great, Michael had a great game and was a very pleasant partner.

The Carvery meal after the OPen was excellent in quality & presentation and the deserts superb with a selection of cheeses as well.

A pleasant day in glorious weather, met some lovely golfers from other "posh" clubs. Thank you MIchael for being a "Pair" and hope we can be there next year!

Highly recommended to pay a visit, may not be cheap, but worth it.

THE END.....
