10/10, it ticks all the boxes & more......

"What is there not to like about Puttenham GC" as would write the illustrious TSG reviewer Nev Smith.

It has beauty, charm, tradition, challenges: every hole will "tickle" your grey matter.

The course is well established parkland, dates back from 1894, a few miles South of Guildford, Surrey, in the picturesque foothills of the Hogs Back. The famous Pilgrims Way passes through parts of the golf courses, I saw a huge numbers of walkers as we were about to tee off from the 1st. Puttenham GC is adjacent to Greyfriars Vineyards which the SATNAV may guide you through if you decide to take the scenic, single track lane to the golf club (which I did). One may find a few golf balls OR a 4x4 along the way...... Better stick to the main A31 road.

The fairways are tight, the greens well designed with nearly invisible undulations, some tiers as well. The bunkers well placed for strategic play, well furnished with lovely sand too. Everything from tees to greens was in A1 condition.

I saw the all the holes with their individuality, found them all very attractive with a "wow" factor. The official signature hole is apparently the 1st, a short uphill Par 4 which used to have a big oak tree, 60 to 130 yards in front of you up the hill, this tree has recently been cut down but a smaller one has been planted instead, well the Oak tree is the emblem of Puttenham GC.

I personally would give the 12th a signature as well: elevated tee by a pond, left/right sloping fairway which may assist you if you get your course management skills that are required for this not too long course. Apparently Springtime, you will have the delight of rhododendrons all around this hole.

There are some beautiful walks through wooded areas to reach the next tees. I must mention the half way hut situated after 9th (the 14th backs the hut), literally in the woods, a real haven of peace, with lots of birds coming to feed, the hut is like a shack but well equipped and very clean, with wonderful toilets too. Well worth stopping.

I visited Puttenham as part of a Ladies Pearsons Competition where one goes out in pair for a Matchplay. My opponent was the most charming host, a good golfer too, she is my now on my friends list although she won our Match.

We had a very warm reception, and a lovely collation after the Match.

The Proshop was friendly and well stocked. Ladies changing room well equipped and had been modernised.

Clubhouse, well apportioned, with different areas that could be partioned off, a big fireplace with sofas, lots of natural light providing a very pleasant experience. On one side one can see the excellent practice facilities, on the other the 18th green in the distance.

Big car park, one for Members and one for visitors.

A course I want to play again and again, I do recommend a visit, although not a long course, Puttenham has everything to make a good day golf out as Visitors can be sure to receive a warm welcome.

THE END..... of my very own views.

Best course I've played in a long time.

A picturesque little gem of a course.
Some short par 4s which are driveable for the longer hitters.
Some tee shots that ask you the question; Can you draw the ball? Can you fade the ball? The answer to most was no, but I had fun trying!
Like I said it is a very pretty course but what swung it for me was the quality of the greens, they were fantastic. Lots of undulations but they all run fair and true.
Noel got a good deal at £25 a round and I would play here again without hesitation.

Beautiful Course: Highly Recommended

This is a beautifully scenic par 71 parkland course; with only 2 par 5s and 3 par 3s. The course contains some challenging elevations for tee and approach shots but is substantially a comfortable walk. There are some longish walks through the trees between some greens and the next tees. The course is a traditional members club with history and tradition, and consequently the course and green were in excellent condition. A feature on the course is the half-way house located in the woods between the 9th green and 10th tee; (closes about 3pm), at which almost all groups on the course take advantage of; which is good vfm. There are only a couple of holes which might be considered bland/unexciting according to ones taste. I was a members guest and obtained good vfm on the day.

Got to play this course

This course has a variety of different holes, from a par 3 of 240 yards to short par fours, long par 5s with doglegs, blind shots and rolling fairways. You need to place your ball in the right areas.
Well worth playing.

Was in great condition considering the rain we have had in last month.

Christmas 2012 comes early

Ok, so you play a golf club these days as a visitor and immediately they want you sign in and give accross your details i.e which club you play at(if your a member somewhere), your email address etc etc.

Now they want your email address so they can constantly send you offers/news etc, ive go so fed up of recieving these emails from golf clubs becauses the special offer are not that special I have started to unsubscribed to most of them ----- bar PUTTENHAM

Puttenham sent me a email that I can play 2/3/4 ball for a LIMITED period for £20 per round during the week before 9.30am if a 2-ball, before 9am if 3/4 ball.

Puttenham has been on my radar for sometime and the amount of offers I have had to play there with golfing bussies for some reason I have never had the chance and have heard nothing but rave reviews.

Woke up and was frosty as hell, got to the club(no wow factor driving into the car park) and probably been happy to have invisibly transported myself back to my bed.

We decieded to play from white tees 6200 yrds and even this seemed quite short in comparison, course was frosty and we knew the sun was due to thaw the course out, good starting 1st hole which was the picture on the score card, 2nd plays nice then followed by a short par 4, difficult 4th then the course really swings into action, what is followed is some excellent golfing holes, a summers day would have given the course that magnificent look.

Prices in the bar were reasonable and food was good.

Would be more than happy to pay double my green fee in the summer.

EXCELLENT

PUTTENHAM GC

This is fast becoming one of my favourite courses in the Hants/Surrey area. It is like a mini Sunnungdale/Woburn with rolling fairways set amongst avenues of trees/pines. Relatively short but tight and interesting with changes of elevation and doglegs aplenty. Small greens in excellent condition. We played a Saturday 4ball for £60 after 3.00 p.m. - great value.
