Seaford Head Golf Club

This is an excellent course, well worth the trip. Nice greens and Tee Boxes. Would love to play the course again sometime and the views are just picture card

A course I first played when it was rather chaotic due to the construction of the new Clubhouse and I did not really enjoy the experience then (summer 2014). I decided to get a 2nd opinion once the building work was completed and WOW, the new Clubhouse (appropriately named "The View") is extremely well designed with stunning views and a very large terrace overlooking the 18t green. Apparently, it is absolutely packed in the Summer!!!!!!

The course was in much better shape than last Summer, tee boxes seem to have had a make over, same for the bunkers who actually had sand in them, and some water.

Today, Thursday 19 Nov 2015, was tough due to the worst weather conditions to play golf in: very strong winds & continuous rain, well "bloody awful". Most of us from Roger Akerman's Pine Tree Golf Society only played 11 holes and went back in to enjoy the warmth and light of "The View", ie. Clubhouse. Some other keen or "mad" golfers completed the 18 holes as I suppose they did not want to miss playing the 12th uphill Par 3 and the splendid finishing 18th. They deserve a medal. We saw them finishing in style from the balcony, a chip-in putt for Par from Phil. Great finish to his round that got him the well deserved 1st prize, very well done.

I would love to return to play Seaford Head in visible conditions as today no one could admire the views that this location offers and really enjoy this links course, what a great shame!!!!!!!

A very personal note:

I do prefer EAST BRIGHTON golf course, well maybe it is because it is a Members club, so really well looked after, it has a more grandiose feel, openness, with views just as exquisite as Seaford Head, The half way hut wins as well, the best for its location, conveniences, set up and views. It is a course I have played in ALL weather conditions (yes I can be a mad golfer too) and TSGers gets members guest rates......Vive Le TSG.

Well, Well, well, after all these years of hearing everyone talk about Seaford Head, I finally get to play it... and it was worth the wait!

What a great course. OK it's short but it's a real test of golf.

Spectacular views, the white cliffs, quick greens, pleasant and friendly staff, a brand new modern clubhouse serving good food and the sun shone too.

Many courses get talked up and you can be left disappointed (depending on how you play) but this course really benefits the straight player and there are plenty of opportunities to get your ball up and down. However, make a bad shot and you can be left wondering why you got out of bed....

I imagine it would be a different course in the wind and rain but I for one, will definitely be going back soon!

That is all I probably want to remember about Seaford Head from my 1st visit.

I did not enjoy the upheaval due the to present construction of a new Clubhouse everything is squeezed, squashed and one can feel the pressure on the staff who seem to have a forced smile but were polite. All the facilities are cramped in Portacabins. the outside seating area is in the Car Park !!!!! mind you it was a nice and sunny spot for after round drinks & presentation.

Proshop: limited stock & no course planner.

Parking very congested and on road leading to golf course.

Due to the construction work, one has to starts at the 5th, which is a very nice downhill, over bushes , slight dog leg Par 5, with a flat green and a few bunkers.

There are no course diagrams by Tee boxes, so not having a course planner, it is a bit of guess work as to where hazards are, etc.

I cannot remember many directional arrows to next Tee either.

Bunkers: the worst I have ever encountered, why called them "sand bunkers" when there only 1 mm of sand on a compacted surface ? I wonder if they come under the "Trade description Act" and has anyone ever challenged a golf club.....

Fairways seem a little neglected.

Greens: rather flat and uninteresting apart from 1 or 2, but cannot remember which ones.

1st cut: quite thick and the rough is as intended and hides many golf balls, most likely to be unplayable. Always take provisional, should your Tee shot have the slightest deviation from the fairways of first cut, will save a lot of time.

Some crissed cross holes, so that will add time to your round, for safety reasons.

Walkers have some rights of way. Quite a few people taking their dog out too. Fresh sea air is very energising.

Seaford Head is a links type, set in a beautiful part of the South coast, with wonderful of the sea, South Downs, Seven Sisters. It has all the right, natural elements, the ups and downs of the land, the vegetation etc. but clearly the course shows signs of neglect. There are challenges and some very interesting holes, specially so the ones where you climb up quite steeply, and the final descent on the 18th, Par 5, but you will find far better local courses to enjoy a round of golf. I was made aware of the disruption but did not expect such upheaval.

Despite all my less that complimentary review, I want to return and play the course when the new Clubhouse is up and running. It should offer wonderful facilities and a stunning view of the coastline, the beach and Seaford Head town.

My highlight was meeting the Lady Captain who gave me a few tips for the day, we were too late for the Pimms (it was Captain's Day), but the tent was still there.

Today (Sat 28 June 2014), it was an SES/Essex Bandits competition with a big turn out. The shiny "little" trophy went to David Holmes who came in with a magnificent Stableford score of 40 points (apparently his golf lessons are paying off...). So, the Trophy remains South side of the River. The weather was excellent, some wind as expected on a links course but the sun was at its warmest and most pleasant when we were relaxing at the 19th hole.

The above are my very own, personal views of my 1st experience at Seaford Head & account of the day. But don't be put off, try for yourself.




THE END........

Playing Seaford Head GC was a marvellous experience. The course was challenging but as only 'moderate' winds were there to contend with (except with the 18th) most greens were reachable in regulation or very close to. Almost all of the greens were in excellent condition and played 'true' though of medium rather than fast pace. I played it much better than I was expecting to. Penalties for an unplayable lie and for a lost ball off the tee were the main blemishes in my round. For those who use an electric trolley be prepared to do some serious pushing uphill at times. Reception by staff was very good. The clubhouse facilities were moderate rather than 'grande'. The one downside for me, especially as someone playing the course for the first time, was that the pro-shop did not have a course planner to help course management. All said this was excellent VFM complimented by excellent camaraderie by fellow TSG members.

This was my first trip to a links course and with the wind doing what it does I had a nightmare so didn't overly enjoy today, however this isn't a reflection on anything other than me. The course was in great condition and it really requires good course management.

There's a net to warm up, a putting green and a club shop. None of them overly impressive but they do what they do.

The club house reminded me of my old Cub Scout hut and I believe a new one is being built or planned to be built but the staff were friendly, had a laugh and we had a great egg ham and chips after the round and was a good size and with the bacon sandwich and coffee before the round, all for £28 so you can't fault the value.

There was a sign saying they don't accept cards so take cash, not something I carry with me as a rule.

I appreciate Links is a different cookie all together and my lack of experience shone out like one of the lighthouses Im sure are in the area, not that I saw one as I spent 4.5 hours looking for my ball that I was having to hit 2 fairways left to have any attempt of getting it somewhere playable one fairway right. The one time i didn't go as far right as I aimed left was when my ball seemed to ignore the wind completely and just go straight. How can this happen?

This isn't the course for the unfit. And I include myself in that as my legs are still aching 4 hours later and I'm an ex infantry soldier and have walked around the world and back....twice!!

Can't wait to go back here and if the golf gods could perhaps go easy on the blowing my ball around even better.

Get down here, take a few extra balls and an electric trolley, get egg ham and chips down your Gregory and if you happen to find any balls with a thick black line and my initials (AT) their mine. There's a few down there.

Grumpy staff, clubhouse and car park need renovating,
course is fantastic, a must to play.

Links course keep the ball straight and you will score well, go into the rough and the trouble starts. after the 12th par 3 it is very very steep climb to the top but the views are the most amazing I have ever seen. The 18th starting from the top of the cliff it is a very vey steep drop its a par 5 and if you get a good drive away you should be ok, one of the best courses I have ever played

Rolling, downland course with beautiful coastal views. Well-maintained fairways, greens in good condition with interesting topography, often fortified by bunkers strategically placed to catch any inaccurate shots to the green! The course is not overlong but has some very intersting holes, and is a good test for golfers of any standard. I would thoroughly recommend it as good value for money.

Considering the weather we have had,it was very dry.The greens where long to accomadate this but otherwise value for money,just lacks practise facilities...

Being a member I play "The Head" pretty regular. I find it a very interesting test of golf ranging from relatively straight forward to damn right difficult when the wind is up. It has many interesting holes with spectacular views when you reach the top of the course and although the facilities are pretty patchwork the course is always in fine fettle.
I would reccomend it to anyone if only for the sheer amount of interesting holes which are there which i find hard pressed to find around other courses in the area bar the royal in eastbourne.
All in all a fine day will be had and for £20 weekdays who can moan at that!!

Course very well kept, can play havoc with your card on a windy day. Club house in need of replacing, food good.
Pro shop well stocked but staff very un-helpful
