Great little golf course BUT.....

Played here recently with member Roger Hurcombe and found the course to be a really good test with no two holes the same...

The course is set in mature parkland and is fairly short but there are a few ditches and trees to make you think about your ball placement. The greens aren't the best you will play on and there are signs of wear and tear on them but this course could be a great course if only there was a little TLC given.

There are plans for an improved range but this is under construction, hence the low score I have given to the practice facilities.

However, when it comes to service, like many golf clubs, they have not only let their visitors down but also their members with silly things...

The Clubhouse is modern and clean, although there were few people around (on sat pm) to know how busy the club was. However, the bar staff were at best welcoming and polite but at worst incompetent. The food took over 30 mins to arrive and even then they had forgotten the complete order and I had to take the food that was ready, with me on the course.

The Pro-shop staff were short and abrupt (remember I was with a member!). No smile, no offer to show you where things were, in fact, even asking for a scorecard felt like I had committed a cardinal sin. Alas, there was no commitment to service at all.

However, when all said and done I did enjoy the course and the day and Mr.Hurcombe was a great host!

Great Summer Course

This course is fairly undulating and has some tough holes. Having said that, it's a very pleasant layout and a joy to play. The greens were in pretty good condition although could perhaps be a little better at this time of year. Some of the bunkers didn't have too much sand but still in pretty good condition. I say this is a good summer course because it has the reputation of being a bit heavy in the winter, being built on clay. The club house is very nice and serves good food. The driving range is currently out of action as spoil from the A21 is currently being dumped there.

A Nice Challenge

The Driving range is out of use at the moment due to spoil from the A21 upgrade being dumped there. That aside the course is in good condition although some of the greens were very dry and in need of water. You can get into a lot of trouble if you are not straight but isn't that true of any golf course. Best played in the summer as it does get very wet in winter with Buggy and Trolly bans.

Great setting in beautiful Sussex countryside & the Trophy was mine....

Only 25 years old but well matured, easy to find with a large Car Park.
All facilities are great: big Proshop with discount offered on the day, welcoming Clubhouse & staff, superb food at reasonable prices.

The course is not overly long from the White/Red/Yellow or Blue tees, well set out, the order of the holes have changed recently making it a very flowing round even if the walks between the holes are long but one can admire the forest & gorgeous views of the South Downs.

The course is in good condition, presents a fair amount of challenges: ditches, water hazards, up & down & side slopes, not too dramatic dog legs apart from the very technical 7th hole which I shall describe later as my favourite. The Par 3s range from 200 to 120 yards long. Pars 4s & 5s not long and that is reflected in the SSS of 65 for the Yellows...... Some high scores can be had. The fairways had a lot of run as slightly dry, the bunkers were quite sandy and manageable, the greens for some reasons were not as fast as expected....

My favourite: Hole 7th, Par 5: a sharp dogleg right, downslope to a ditch, (dont forget to ring the bell at the turn as the turn is blind) a further slope to a large pond situated in front of the raised green, out of bounds on both sides for most of the hole. A true challenge. Something unusual happened on this hole: I unfortunately managed to get my ball in the water but WITHOUT A SPLASH !!!!!! Well more like a hole in one as my ball went straight in the overflow square hole surrounded by very pretty water pink & yellow water lillies. No need to say I did not try to play the ball as it lied as did Richard Bland at the BMW Championship in Munich this weekend....... But still managed to score on this hole , Index 3 from my Blue tees.

Walking is very pleasant as said earlier, but a buggy would make sense if your legs are less than agile.

Our game was interrupted by thunder & lightning, we had to return to base for safety as the Pro sounded the horn. Our Team had just teed off, so we had to leave our balls on the fairway and wait about 30 minutes for the storm to pass. We had hailstones too....

The game was organised by Roger Akermann/ Pine Trees society, a great day out, a lovely venue with a friendly crowd. We had breakfast, a light meal after the game and before the presentation and guess who won the "Reevo Trophy" ?????

Will certainly return to Wellshurst and recommend you play the course if you are in that part of East Sussex.

THE END.....of my review and account of a great day.

WELLSHURST

Pro shop staff very friendly and welcoming and food an drink in clubhouse very good. A pleasant enough course to play in the summer which provides a fair test of you golf but unfortunately suffers with poor drainage in the winter months.
