It all started back in 1898 as a 9 holes, then in 1905 J H Taylor re-designed the course to an 18 holes, then in 1925 Dr. Alister Mackenzie brought "a little it of Augusta feel" to Willingdon, this is the unique course you play today. Unique as one can start play simultaneously on the 1st, 9th and 15th holes all situated near the elegant Clubhouse overlooking the whole of the scenic golf course. Willingdon is 5 minutes from Eastbourne, at the foot of the Sussex Downs, so protected from the elements, well a little as today 21.2.2013, it was windy and bitterly cold and the snow was trying to fall. A great test for all golfers, although not excessively long from the Yellow tees, one had to think cleverly.
The scenery is spectacular, the fairways are 1st class condition, fairly wide sometimes, but with their danger zones, trees or bunkers, well placed. The approach to the greens need careful attention. The greens are of excellent quality, very fast, very true (my technical bit) and need a special mention as there are 4, yes four 2 tier greens to make your round even more enjoyable - The Head Greenkeeper has won many awards. The bunkers are numerous, some very deep, there is different sort of sand, sometimes, very fine & soft and also coarse. I prefer the soft sand. The walks to next hole, not always well indicated, are very scenic and sometimes long & uphill but you are rewarded with spectacular views over Eastbourne town, the harbour, may be Hastings on a clear day and Channel as well. You will feel very fit & full of energy after your round. There are 3 (I think) criss cross holes, so if you play the course for the 1st time, take extra care. I could describe a few holes, but just 3 for today:
Hole 5 (The Sleeper), the signature hole, Par 3, 164 yds (Yellow Tees). Elevated tee, drop down and then the wonderful & unique raised green surrounded by railway sleepers, hence its name. If you happen to miss the green and stand at the bottom of the green, it looks just like a huge beer or wine barrel, maybe 3 metres high !!!!
Hole 13 (Sea View), long. tricky Par 3, 249yrds, a wonderful view of Eastbourne, the sea etc... If you hit too far left or too far right you are in deep trouble.
Hole 14 (Bridle Way), Par 5, 523 yds, a downhill right to left dogleg, that can be difficult to play, if not thought out carefully.
The Clubhouse is an impressive building overlooking the whole of this beautiful golf course, and the practice putting green. A little dated in decor but in keeping with a traditional members club. You will get a warm and friendly welcome. Food and coffee is good in taste and value. Proshop situated behind the clubhouse is well stocked and you get a friendly reception as well. Car Park is nicely situated behind a tall green hedge with a lovely arch shaped entrance to the golf club/course. (Photos will be posted). Practice area seems good but did not use it (too cold).
Todays' golf was a monthly Pine Tree Society game, always friendly & very well organised (trophies/prizes) by Roger A. who never fails to pick some fantastic courses, one never gets disappointed despite the unclement weather, sometimes a low scoring card but it makes you want to return hoping for better weather and better score.
The Pine Tree Society offers for a very modest price, a 1st class technical golf shirt, a lovely design & colour. I bought one and gave it to Mr L. & he looks gorgeous with it. (Unfortunately no Ladies size). If you have not played at Willingdon, please try the Augusta feel, but choose a warm sunny day. I shall return.
THE VERY END....
