Enjoyable 27 Holes

Singing Hills is a 27 hole parkland golf centre/complex in Alborne, West Sussex. There are three loops of 9 holes each, ie the Lake, River and Valley courses. The SES group played them in order of Valley, Lake and River.

1. Valley Course
This was our 1st 9 holes. There are 7 par 4s, and 1 par 3 and 1 par 5, ie par 34 total. I thought this was a good mix of holes but the weaker of the three 9s. The course played longer than the carded yardages because of the windy conditions.

2. Lake Course
This was our 2nd 9 holes. There are 6 par 4s, 2 par 3s and 1 par 5, ie par 35. This 9 featured the short 126 yards island 2nd green. A large green which shouldn't be a problem in calm conditions but in wet and windy conditions; which they were and were. There is a also a challenging 177 par 3 6th hole and the drive and approach over water to the 9th green are also a challenge.

3 River Course
This was our 3rd 9 to play. There are 5 par 4s, 3 par 3s and 1 par 5, par 34. This was the tougher of the three 9s; with difficult tees shots and uphill approaches to navigate. The 180 yard par 3 9th hole is also a potential scorecard disaster in waiting, with the carry over a sizeable tree and uphill carry to the raised green.

Unless I had a buggie throughout; I would physically find playing all 27 holes difficult. My 18 hole battery gave out and thanks to Michael Pitter's foresight and generosity I was able to borrow a carry bag for the River course. Needless to say my worst scoring 9 holes was the River course, due to tiredness and the fact that this was the harder 9 holes.

Therefore my preference would be to only play 18 holes, and in that context I thought the River and Lake combination is probably the better/tougher golfing challenge. Let the 'youngsters' take on the 27 holes!

The 'golf only' weekend green fee paid for the 27 holes was £40. For the quality of course I thought this was about £10 too much, albeit the fee was £7 less than the published rate. Although I would like to play it again I would probably look for a midweek or twilight option first.

Apart from the heavy showers, the one downside to the facility was that it was a very busy course that day and there was no room in the main car park even though I arrived at least an hour before our scheduled noon tee-off. The overspill car par is a long walk away from the clubhouse but I wasn't happy about the overspill car park's security as it was screened by trees.

This is a not a course I can recommend to TSGers as a 'must play' course but it was acceptable for a pay and play type venue and I think would be enjoyable.

Worth a visit

Nice course with plenty of interesting holes. On the lake and river, other than the abundant use of doglegs, the holes are all pretty varied, so no boredom.
Enjoyable course.

Worthy of a visit with a 3x9 combination

Set in park land at the foot of the south downs (just outside Brighton) The 3 x 9 makes a good day out. Each 9 has it's own chracturistics that, at times can and will stretch your ability. Some of the par 4's in my view are very close to being par 5's but I expect after playing them a few times you will know how to play each hole to it's advantage. The bunkers were well stocked with sand and kept in good condition. The greens had recently been tined and treated but this did not effect the play too much. My only downer is that every tee had been treated with a dose of checken manure which has a very potent smell - I thought at first it was my playing partners but thankfully I was wrong. Overall a good day out and well good value for money.

Still resonating in my ears....

I am probably the only person that could hear the "singing" but that is my special gift. Singing Hills Golf course is only 20 years old but already well established. The design follows the natural contours of the valley, the rivers & the lakes. All this with the very pictuesque Sussex Downs as a back drop. An expansive setting made of 3 loops of 9 holes, each loop with its own challenges:

The River
The Valley
The Lakes

Any combination will give you an interesting and varied game.

A friendly welcome in the perched up Proshop, of circular shape, very light & airy, well stocked with classy brands of clothings for Men & Women and a vast choice of equipment. As there are NO buggies at Singing Hills, our "Titanium TSGer" was offered a free round for walking the course. When checking in, I made sure that the Lakes and the River were included in our 18 holes as the Lakes has the most amazing Par 3, (hole 2): an island slightly raised, just over 100 yds long, 1 large bunker at the back and 1 on the right hand side of the green which is sloping back to front. Most of us managed it very well, but I did not, maybe I was a little apprehensive of the 2 swans swimming in the deep water! The 2 loops we played on have a good fluid design with neat paths leading to the next hole. Each Tee box has a square flower pot full of bright summer colours, ball washer & towel. Nice fairways, well kept, well cut grass, some sloping, some up & down the hills, lots of water come into play as the names 'Lakes' & 'River' imply. A real challenge & a 2nd visit will probably produce a better score. The greens were of excellent quality and true, a pleasure to putt. The sun was shining, the air was warm, a slight breeze and this vast expanse of 27 holes did look resplendiscent.

A few favourite holes:

The Lakes: Hole 2, described above: the Island hole..

The Rivers: Hole 1, Par 4, sloping to the right, where a steam crosses the fairway diagonally, with large mature trees to get over, stream on the left which is OOB, then uphill to a sloping green, well guarded by bunkers. Hole 2, Par 4, a Tee shot over 2 lakes, fairways sloping to the left, more water hidden on the right, with large trees, before reaching the green. Hole 9, Par 3, a long one, 170 yds from Yellow and 162 from Red, the fairways downhill towards an elongated lake 4 times the width of the green which is raised, OOB on the right, a tall tree before the lakes. I dont think one can see the lake from the Tees. Very interesting and beautiful hole.

I could describe many more as there is always something that sticks in my memory, but I dont want to make this review too long. Very pleasant clubhouse with good selection of food and local beers, sunny patio area overlooking a practice putting green, the large uphill open driving range with distance flag and chipping area. A large Car Park with some shade.

Will certainly return when next visiting West Sussex and if you are in the area, do go and play golf and enjoy Singing Hills as it offers a challenge for every golfer, and you will receive a warm weclome.

THE END....
