Tilgate better then you think, do play here

Great layout, good facilities. When visited lots of work on greens, bunkers, fairways, give it 4-6 weeks, it will be great value. The most trees I have seen on a golf course, lovely to play and will play this again a few times each year, on my YES list.

Great value for a surprising pretty parkland setting

In my honest opinion I think Tilgate is a real gem of a course - not really sure why it is not so popular on the TSG site. Can’t really review the clubhouse as only just coming out of lockdown - looks OK though.
Doglegs galore the setting is in quite a pretty parkland setting. Although most fairways are reasonably wide it really is a great course to keep the driver in the bag and brush up on the long irons, or in my case hybrids off the tee.
Just on the edge of Crawley you really would not think you are playing in such a nice setting, although with plenty of stray walkers you sometimes realise the town is not that far away as well. Facilities are good - cafe/driving range etc. It is also great value - we paid just £18 on a friday rather than upwards of £35 not that far away. At my level it suits me fine.
Only real negative - the greens which are suffering from some kind of disease are in poor condition which did affect my final scoring. Have a round - you might be surprised.

poor course needs love and attention

New club house and that looks really nice but it goes down hill from there.
1) Tee boxes: Now that's the first thing us golfers use and all the tee boxes were either poorly kept uneven, bare of grass and generally poor.
2) Bunkers: Although I did not go in many the ones I did go in were poor,no sand or no rakes.
3) Greens: very patchy on all greens, looked poorly maintained and they did not run true at all. 1 putt from my playing partner got to the hole and shot off 90 degrees!!!
4)They have obviously been working on the woods around the course. Plenty of tree`s were cut down and were left in there place. So if going into the woods there was no chance of finding your ball and when you did it was impossible to play. We then found out from the guy on the till AFTER the game that there was a local rule saying you could get a free drop. So nice of them to tell us.
Would I go back: NO.

Shocking condition

Can't find anything positive to say about the course, the tee boxes were poor, the bunkers either had no sand, or no rakes, or both in most cases, and the greens looks diseased and were a nightmare to put on. The clubhouse is modern, and OK, but not enough to ever entice me back here again.

Picturesque, tight, enjoyable despite some wetness....

A Pay & Play course appertaining to the Glendale group, but was part of the vast Tilgate Estate in the High Weald of Sussex. Very picturesque & surrounded by Tilgate country park & conservation area. You will see lots of fitness fanatics on a weekend & walkers with dogs or without.

Very tight tree lined course indeed, 15 dog legs, left/right , well guarded greens, the shaded ones still had partial frost.

Today Sat 24 Jan 2015, the course was empty and we realised why: a little wet in places. The first 9 fairways were fine, draining well, but as you play the last 9 you encounter water. The Tee boxes were quite muddy too, so were the paths to the next hole but @ £16 for a round on a sunny winter day, a lovely 3-balls, we were not complaining. I must thanks Brian H. for helping me with my new super GPS which works in yards & METRES too!!!!!!!

There is lateral water on some holes, some ditches across others, and 1 pond at the final hole, but nothing too daunting.

Tilgate Forest reminds me of a little bit of Gatton Manor, Foxhills, Pine Ridge & Camberley Heath.

The 16th & 17th holes are the jewels of this course as follows:

16th, short Par 4, sharp dog leg right, blind tee shot, sloping fairway uphill, large bunker at the turn & others very strategically placed, a raised tiered green protected on the left.

The 17th, long Par 5, is one of the few straight holes on the course apart from the 4 Par 3s. It is long, down & up, a large ditch across that needs to come into the equation as to laying up or not, some trees protruding onto the fairway & only 2 bunkers in appropriate places.

The Clubhouse is very new, modern, light and airy. Frienddy staff all around. It was extremely busy in the Café as all the runner/walkers had come in for a bite/drink.

Pro shop adequately furnished & gave a nice welcome.

The Car park is fairly large. The access to Tilgate Forest GC is through a housing estate, the lane/road is more or less single, with passing places and very busy as it leads to the Country Park as well.

A lovely course, challenging layout but not one for winter play. Cannot wait to return in the Spring or Summer. Thank you to our "Naked Golfer" Steve for posting this bargain.

Interesting!

Despite being told that it was a very tight course and I would lose lots of balls I only lost one!!! You have to keep your wits about you but I would definitely go back to play there.

Tight fairways

You need to be straight off the tee. Plenty of trouble left and right. true test of golf.

Very tight

When coming to play Tilgate Forest Golf club as teenagers it was a big treat for us, we didnt drive back then and had to wait for my mate to invite us with his dad, due to space in his dads car he could only take 1 friend with them and he had to choose between about 10 of us, looking back it was like a ryder cup pick, if you were chosen you would be on cloud nine otherwise it was left to playing the crappy 9 hole at chessington.

I have played here twice in the last 15 years and not much has changed about the course, there wasnt many golfers around for a Sunday, still plays as tight as ever and you need to be on form(very treeline, lots of doglegs and the course plays just over 6000yrds off yellows) the course has all the charactistics of being a top course if money was spent on it, instead it will always be a pay and play.

Overall a good challenge, worth a play if your in the area, i still enjoy other local courses more(rookwood, cottesmore) but will return when i really hit form!!!!
