Good course, but starting to see the effects of the heatwave

Played this in a Society Day. Unusually, it starts with a Par 3. Don't be deceived, the 2nd and 3rd are brutes unless you can drive 180/200 yards off the tee. After that it gets easier, but there are a good number of challenging holes. The fairways were browning up due to the heatwave, but the rough was also short and not penal. Plenty of bunkers, though all have plenty of good sand in them, that getting out was OK.

Club House is modern and well laid out, but bar staff didn't seem to know what they were doing. Service was slow. Food was good and plenty of it.

Plenty of parking spaces.

Buggy was expensive at £35 and no GPS.

I'm glad I've played this, but I wouldn't rush back, especailly as it's a 65 mile trip to it, most of that on the M25.

Tidy course

Played at Royal Ascot today for the first time. Nice clubhouse and a good atmosphere all round. A fairly flat course but quite challenging especially into a prevailing wind on a lot of the holes. A lot of out of bounds on some of the holes so you need to accurate off the tee box. A big difference between the white tee boxes and the yellows on some holes which makes a huge difference to your scorecard.

I would love to come back and play it again now that I have been round it once. An easy walk as it is so flat. Nice food and a drink in the clubhouse afterwards. All in all a nice day on the course . . . Just wish I could have played better!!! Always next time.

The scorecard doesn't tell the truth!

Recently left windlesham which has the clickiest members ever....and after debating The Leatherhead, Mill Ride and Chobham my uncle and I joined Royal Ascot.
If the bunkers were better (being worked on) and they were allowed fairway irrigation, and the clubhouse was updated inside this would score top marks. That said, despite what the scorecard may lead you to believe, it is a tough track. The yellows allow for a friendly game but the whites makes it very hard, none more so than the 200 yds par 3 opener. Greens are immaculate and so true and each hole offers something to test you, without being impossible. You are rewarded for course management and only punished for taking a risk or hitting a poor shot....well worth a visit!!!
Great members roll ups and comps throughout the week too

good test of golf

Royal ascot sounds very grand, untill you play the course. Not bad not fantastic.A 7 out of 10 for me.With all the prestigious courses in a 5 mile raduis (the berkshire, wentworth, suningdale) You woulx think Ascot would be pretty special. Not really. Dont get me wrong the greens were very well manicured and exceptional fast (think i 3 puted 4 times and 4 putted twice)It made a change to play bunker shors with actual sand in them.Fairways were very poir though I did pllay in a chairty day so it was worth playing. would i rush back to play it......NO.i think in a years time when i re visit it the course will be in better nick

A Very Enjoyable Challenge

This is a challenging but 'shortish' par 70 parkland course located in the shadows of the famous race course so loved by HRM, though whether the Royal patronage extends to use of the golf course itself who knows???

The shorter course length is accounted for by the fact that there are 6 par 3s, 8 par 4s and 4 par 5s. The need for accuracy on so many par 3s represents a danger to the score/handicap! All of the par 3s are a 'beautiful' challenge.

The 1st hole is a medium length par 3, not ideal for the first shot of the day; and the round finishes with the challenging par 5 18th, with a carry over a ditch followed by a pond adjoining the front right hand side of the green. The tiger line is not a sensible approach here!

For the par 4s and par 5s from the tee there are numerous challenges, ie bunkers, doglegs, trees and ditches to be negotiated. However, there is more landing room available on many holes than there appears from the tees. The bigger hitters among TSGers will enjoy this but remember that in dry summer conditions the long grass and OOB markers become a bigger threat. Better club selection and less vanity should be the order of the day!

The course, ie fairway, and greens, are in great condition despite the recent wet weather.

The less agile or more senior players will find this a relatively comfortable walk, especially with electric trolley.

Visitors are very welcome at the course and staff, both in the pro-shop and bar were extremely helpful and the bar service/food was good. One of the assistant pros (Tom) was previously an assistant at my club Cherry Lodge.

For you early starters the bar/food service wasn't available until after 10:00 am, though in compensation it was available later in the afternoon.

I was fortunate to be able to take advantage of TSGer Paul Hunter's corporate membership at Royal Ascot on two occasions recently whereupon he has been a great host. Hopefully other opportunities will arise.

I thoroughly enjoyed my golf, the hospitality and company of fellow TSgers. I have also entered the club's Seniors Open event later in the summer in order to enjoy the course once more.

Nice course...

Played here in the Limbcare Charity Golf day and really enjoyed the course...

Based close to the famous Horse Racing venue, the club is well established and welcoming.

Excellent tee boxes, lush fairways, flat greens....whats not to like.

Parkland in design and layout, if I lived closer I would be happy to play here again and again.

Looking forward to going back in the Summer months!

Classic Parkland Course

My first visit to Ascot, I do hope I will return? The weather was not great, rained on and off for the first hour. This was a charity event so I played in a better ball team. Maybe I charged a few putts trying for pars when I should have lagged up. The course is superbly set up and not to long at 5836 off the yellows, but very tight in places. Many holes have dog legs. 12 has a massive tree that blocks out the corner, getting a bogey here is a bonus. The greens were quick and hard which makes approaching them a bit tricky. They are very undulating. The bunkers are tough but have plenty of sand and had been raked.
Club house and food are very good I could not fault the staff. Practise areas are ok, two driving nets, putting & chipping green. I'd like to return on a sunny dry day, the course was wet when we played it, no run at all on the fairways which left approaches long. Easy to find 5 miles from the M25. Well worth a look if a traditional course is your thing!

Okay course

Fairly flat and not many challenges other than staying on the fairway. Really enjoyed playing there. My first 100 break!

Beautiful course & a golf club steeped in history....

Although the Golf Club dates back 1887, the present course is fairly new, having moved from Ascot Heath in the middle of the Racecourse to its present location, Ascot Farm, in 2005 on the edge of the Windsor forest, once a medieval deer park. That will do for the history but there is a lot more to be written.

A challenging, pretty parkland with interesting & varied holes well protected by some 54 bunkers in total, but saying that there is one Par 3 of 186 yards @ the 13th hole, with no bunkers at all, a large dip/ dead ground before the green will make up the challenge.

Very mature for a new course, lots of wildlife (I have never seen or heard so many pheasants), lots of environmentally protected areas, I suppose it saves times in looking for or retrieving a ball!!).

Water & "wet areas" come into play on quite a few holes and the 18th has a lovely water fountain as a feature in a middle of a small pond (or lake).

The fairways were excellent, so were the Tee boxes, the numerous bunkers had quite a few stones and could have done with more sand but this is a minor criticism for this superb layout in an attractive location. The 1st cut i very thick and the rough very rough but why go in there in the first place?
The greens were excellent and very testing....

All the par 3s are fairly long apart from one. Nice dog legs that will tempt the better golfers, but the trees are big and full of leaves....Some fairly straightforward holes but the bunkers are very well placed for decision time.

The 1st nine will take you back to the Clubhouse, always useful for a quick stop.

My 2 favourites:

13th Par 3, mentioned above.

18th, Par 5, a lovely finishing hole, very challenging dog leg with a ditch, 4 bunkers guarding the greens and a large pond on the other side.

Very friendly place and a warm reception in Proshop and Clubhouse, a friendly hello from the Members too, large car parks.

A fairly mixed bunch of players from Seniors to Juniors, etc. There seems to be lots of competitions going on. Visitors genuinely welcome.

Modern changing rooms for the Ladies.

In short, a lovely golf course that will challenge all. I would love to return sooner than later and I highly recommend to play Royal Ascot if you get the chance, you will enjoy the royal surroundings, keep out of the rough & protected areas and you will have a great game , a great score. Enjoy every putt on these lovely greens.

I must thank Dermot H. for putting the game up and giving us a chance to discover Royal Ascot.

By the way the postal code for GPS may take you to one of the entrances to the Racecourse. Keep your eyes open.

I could write a lot more but I thought I keep it sweet & short.

THE END......

Proper golf course

I am sure brigitte will post a novel in a minute, but for those without 2 hours spare....
Brilliant greens...no bobbles at all and very true and fast. Some golfers may blame the greens rather than the subtle slopes and breaks.
Some very testing holes but equally, some simple ones for those who have an ounce of course management skill. A giod mix of long holes and short.
Some bunkers were full of stones and some a little short of sand. But still a 4/5.
Well worth a trip if you get a deal. 2nd time you play you will change a lot of club selections!

Decent course

We were made to feel very welcome in the pro shop when we went to check in, something that a lot of other courses could learn from.

The course seemed very fair, although it does start to narrow a little towards the end of the round. Unusually, there are 6 par 3's, but I don't see that as a negative.

We played here after a long sunny period so the fairways were hard and starting to turn brown, and finding them with your tee shot didn't necessarily mean getting a great lie. The greens were okay, but at the moment they're nothing really special. They were smooth running, but pretty slow.

Avoid the rough. You'll be lucky to even find your feet if you go into it, so finding your ball is a nightmare.

We played here on a midweek £20 deal, which is probably about the right price. I think the normal price is nearer £40 midweek, and had I played there for that price then I think I'd have felt a little cheated. Once the course matures it may well merit that though.

The clubhouse is very nice.
