A beautiful challenging parkland course

Peterborough Milton GC is a parkland style course in the grounds of the Fitzwilliam Estate, Milton Ferry, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire!

*****
Club History
The course/club in it's current format was established in 1938! It was designed by James Braid!

The club appears to be an amalgamation of Peterborough GC (1912) and Milton Park GC (1921)!

*****
Former professional players to have graced the course include Henry Cotton, Bobby Locke, Max Faulkner, Dai Rees, Peter Alliss, Brian Barnes and Mark James!

*****
The course has been selected to host the 2020 English Seniors Women's Amateur Championship!

*****
Midweek visitors green fees are £45, members guest rate £25, and £30 County Card!

*****
I entered their annual Seniors Open Stableford competition! The entry fee was £30, including coffee, 18 holes, a two course post game meal and prizes! Excellent vfm!

*****
The course is a very gentle walk meandering through beautiful parkland scenery!

*****
The course is a par 71 off the men's white and yellow tees, and a par 72 from the ladies red tees!

The SSSs are 72, 70 and 72 respectively!

The yardages are 6,560, 6,288 and 5,530 respectively!

Our competition was off the whites!

I scored 30pts (with 4 blobs), and finished in 15th place, out of 72 competitors! One of my playing partners, a PMGC member, scored 33pts and finished in 3rd!

The winning score was 36pts! The CSS was 75, reflecting it's difficulty!

This was a low points scoring competition! I'd say the difficulties with the greens explains this!

*****
The greens are mainly very large undulating, multi tier, fast paced and tricky lines!

Pins for the competition were mostly in truly difficult positions!

My outturn putting stats were 35, ie 5 singles, 10 doubles, 2 triples and 1 quadruple! Could/should have been 3 or 4 fewer but not helped by one disastrous hole!

*****
The fairways were in excellent condition throughout! Many are generously wide in places but trouble awaits wayward tee shots! I found myself blocked out a couple of times by pulling left!

*****
The par 3s are indexed as the 4 easiest holes on the course, so no shots for me! My feeling is that degree of difficulty probably hasn't been given due weight in the indexing process! Holes 2 and 9 indexes are questionable!

#2: 184 yards, index 17! A long 'funnel' effect tee shot along the boundary fence to an open green guarded by bunkers right and left!

#9: 175 yards, index 15! A long tee shot to a green ringed by several bunkers! I found one of the bunkers!

#11: 141 yards, index 18! A moderate length tee shot with a tall tree impacting the right side line to the green!

#16: 134 yards, index 16! A downhill tee shot carry over a wide central front bunker, to slopey green!

My outturn score for the 4 par 3s was +6, ie 1 par and 3 double bogeys!

With no shots on these holes, a return of +2 would be OK! However I didn't find the greens with any of my tee shots so the outcome was very disappointing!

*****
The par 4s

My outturn score for the 11 par 4s was +13, ie +3 too many after allowing for my 10 shots! The 10th was the problem!

*****
The par 5s

#1: 504 yards, index 6! A beautiful opening hole, involving an uphill shot over water to an uphill fairway and an approach to a multi-tier green!

#8: 491 yards, index 7! A left to right dogleg, with several bunkers along the right side of the fairway!

#13: 504 yards, index 5! A gentle right to left dogleg, with 8 bunkers along either side of the fairway and a further 4 bunkers surrounding the green! I managed to get up and down from one of these bunkers!

My outturn score for the par 5s was +1, ie 2 pars and a bogey! An excellent outcome as they are all shot holes!
