Good layout but poorly maintained greens

Nice and challenging course but the greens are very poor. Lack of tee times meant we were backed up and slow from the get go at 7.30

Wide open course very forgiving, great for beginners

Didn’t use the clubhouse facilities just a quick 18 holes to see how my golf is after 9-10 years away from the game. Wide fairways and quite open, allows big drives and long irons. Fairways still have a little bounce and roll. Greens quite receptive. Mainly flat greens and still some damage from heat of summer with a few cracks around. Flat putting so no real test but great round for £14

Not Good

It looks nice in terms of layout etc, but once I started playing I wasnt impressed.

I can fully understand with the dry weather that courses have suffered, But the tee boxes were in a poor state, but it was the Greens that made me walk off after 9 holes. Absolutely terrible, bumpy, repaired areas .. just not very good

I wont be going back any time soon

Hills by name, hills by nature

Easy to find, adequate parking facilities, limited catering, welcoming staff at this public pay and play. Quite a windswept day making distance control guesswork. Course in good condition, greens a touch variable. Interesting layout which would benefit from prior knowledge, however there wasn't much to tempt me back. Elevation changes made it a tough walk, no real feature holes, but you get what you pay for.

Long Open Link style course

A long Open Link style course at 6274yds off the yellow. Due to the openness of the course any wind feels a lot more. We had a 15mph wind it feels a lot more.
Fairways are open and lush with no real hazards on the 1st9.
On the 2nd 9 lateral hedges and water come into play. Some blind holes over hills with a marker poles.
Dog leg right holes 3rd & 5th. With this in mind course management comes into play?
Greens a bit bubbly but overall pretty good apart from 13th.
Bunkers were poor and hard very little sand.
Sadly no practise nets. Small Putting green next to the 1st. There is a Driving range.
Club house had friendly staff. Did not see a Pro Shop.
Hot drinks out of a machine and the Bar was closed?
Also you can’t book a tee time you turn up and join the queue. We were lucky we were behind a single and 4 ball and waited 20 minutes.
Overall a good course worth visit. £14 midweek.
Tough track for me at 6274 yards

Little gem

I'd heard the stories and read the reviews and was expecting a tatty little muddy course, boy was I surprised. Apparently there has been a lot of work put into the place, the fairways are in excellent condition, greens pretty good apart from one. Some really interesting and challenging holes, some blind tee shots to contend with. Hedges to get over and some shrewdly placed water. Overall a very good course which I am keen to play again and probably again. Very pleasant round in bright sunshine.

A whole lot better than when I played it many years ago,

Dunton Hills, excellent course now, fairways in very good condition, greens also fair as they are working on them now. I think even better than Blake's. Worth the visit, so go and play the course, it's pay and play.

Blastfrom the past

Have not played here for a number of years and it hasn't changed. Greens are patchy fairways hard to distinguish from rough in places. It's cheap so can't complain.

Cheap and cheerful

A pay and play course which is fine for a fun day out. The condition leaves a lot to be desired . The fairways were bumpy and the greens were very wooly and slow. But cheap at £12.50 . We were very lucky with the weather as it was a warm day with a breeze. I would not want to play here on a winters day. I would imagine you would freeze .The staff were friendly and helpful . So can't say never again , will have to wait and see.

cheap as chips

costs 12.50 to play Dunton Hills without any discounts which is definitely a cheap round of golf.
The greens are a bit woolly at times, so not sure if the ball will stop on the green or bounce off and variable paced, quite a hilly course, but you do get a few nice views at the tops of some of them. Staff have always appeared very friendly and polite to me and my son. It is just a shame that the course isn't cared for a little better, but it is about 2 miles from S Essex who charge twice the price, and not anywhere near as busy.
The course has a many bay range, putting green etc
It isn't a course I would want to play every week, but if you fancy a round and want it cheap, Dunto will allow this, and has a lovely outside and inside area for the 19th hole

Poor condition

I found the fairways poor, greens deceased and temp greens in place. Tee boxes were not cut and the whole course was in poor condition

Economical course, good food

The fairways are very dry even after all the recent rain. Unfortunately this means that although the ball will run, your second shot is difficult if you need to lift the ball.
The greens have no give in them seems to stop even when you think you have a chance of holing it..

Scored well, but will not be back in a hurry.

Average course

Dunton Hills was a very average course, the fairways are wide and there is not much rough to speak about. There are some ditches to contend with and some tree's but nothing much, it is a good course for high h'caps to practice.
It is also cheap(£12.50 weekday)which sometimes attracts the wrong sort of golfer. When I played last someone from the group in front threw my ball in a bunker after I had driven just short of the green on a par 4, after explaining where I was about to stick my wedge he replaced it, and this was a guy in his 50's not some youngster.
All in all it is worth the green fee but not on weekends when me and my son (11 year old)were charged £25 each.
Clubhouse and staff were friendly and the driving range and putting green are good. There is also a 18 hole Par 3 course to sharpen up your short game.

Dunton Hills - June 2011

Dunton Hills, a public pay and play course, just roll up and go is the ethos. Good practice facilities and good welcoming clubhouse/cafe. Cold drinks machine were a bit lucozade or leave it... (not too good for the diabetics amongst us).

Parkland course, with a links feel, not many mature trees (but you can still hit the odd one) and although there weren't any 'feature holes' the course is tight and challenging. Greens were soft and fluffy and slower than others at this time of year (but reasonably fair).

A nice walking course, good views and open to wind.

I'm told it is much improved - and it was a good day out, steady scoring was the key for me.

GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY

At this course you pay for what you get,at £12.50 its good VFM.Pleasant enough clubhouse, average practice facilities, the course has some good holes and others that make you wonder, like the par 3 where you cant see the green you play a blind shot over a hill, the 18th is a terrific finishing hole par 5 its risk and reward, the overall condition was not great as it is built on clay and the fairways where very hard with some cracks starting to appear, the greens need some T.L.C.THEY WHERE QUITE BAD.needed cutting badly they ran at different speeds as well.
This course could be quite nice with a bit more maintenance and money spent on it.However I would go back and play it again as I did enjoy the course layout it was a challenge.

Dunton Hills review

Course is fairly open. So can be windy. Other than that a good course for those of us still learning, and not having to worry to much about tree's either side of the fairway.

Not an expert on courses as I have only played 2
But my colleagues have played many courses and rate this course highly. I have marked 5 stars for value
I shared a buggy with a friend and it cost us £20 each for 18 holes. Good bar area and good bar meals
