Great course

A bit of a long slog for my 32 handicap grass a bit too long around the greens, I enjoyed the course and will be back

Usually one of my favourites

Stockbrook has always been one of my favourites. Playing it on Wednesday I was surprised in the poor condition of the course at the end of May. The greens were superb but slow. The first/second cut was too long we spent ages looking for balls just off the fairway which made us slow. Its a shame because I love the course layout but its certainly not at its best at the moment.
The club house and staff were great as always!

Wouldn't rush to play again, especially in winter

Best part were the greens. Fairway grass was long but to be fair the ground was very boggy in most places so difficult to cut. Signage left a lot to be desired, a few "Next tee" markers, with long walks between holes and half the time we weren't sure we were heading in the right direction. After about 12 holes we noticed tee nos were on the adjacent bench.
Could find no fault with clubhouse.

Tough Essex Course

A very tough test of golf, especially in these winter conditions. Most of the par 4's are very long and quite hard to hit in two shots. Also five par 5's, mostly lengthy holes and five par 3's which are either long or short and tight. The course itself is quite flat, but this is made up for by some small greens, several ditches and a fair bit of water. Overall, a hard knock but worth the visit for the first timers, just to see how a long game of golf should be played.

Soggy Essex

Stock Brook Manor provided us with a warm welcome and good food - it was just a shame that on the day the course was a let down. A night of heavy rain had turned parts of the course into a bog and most of the round was spent hunting around for golf balls lost in the overly-long semi rough or trying to find a dropping place to avoid casual water. Apparently it is much better in the summer.

Course Review

Stock Brook GC was a lovely venue, finally played after three cancellations due to recent adverse weather. We played the Stock & Brook combination. The course played long due to the windy conditions; the landing areas on par 4s & 5s were generally generous but approach shots to greens were challenging; all of the five par 3s were interesting; my overall scoring was 7 shots above handicap but this was a combination of some poorly executed shots from good positions and the affects of the wind. I have marked it down on VFM grounds because the course did not hold the original lower fee for the society deal.

long and tough but very very good

loved it the first hole is a bit off putting but after that it becomes a really good tough challenge. the green's are slopey but fair and the water does come into play a bit. the par 3's are long and there are 5 par5's i would highly recommend it would jump at the chance to play there again

Highly Recommended...FANTASTIC...FABULOUS...TRUE STYLE....

Today 31st Oct 2012, NO golf clubs, NO golf bags, NO Golf Shoes allowed but only the most colourful & brightest outifts for the 100+ very international guests (French of course, British, Floridian & Irish), young & not so young: it was JP (my son) & Mary (now Mrs L. Jnr) 's wedding & their reception at Stock Brook Manor. A gorgeous young couple & proud parents & family/friends.

A perfect choice where nothing but excellence excelled, grandeur, happiness, joy & lots of laughter & drinks went hand in hand from noon till midnight.

Obviously this is not a course review, but so many golf places have rooms & services for hire for any big events that I shall mention this one, very special to me. I am fully aware that "The Team" may edit or ban this review, but I shall have a go & test the TSG site, after all it is a Members site & one has to make use of it....... I think it is relevant & informative to include the other side of a Golf & Country Club in a lovely part of Essex, not too far from Luton, Stansted, Gatwick & Ebbsfleet International where the many guests arrived from with easy transfer either by regular shuttles or private pick up etc.

The setting, the rooms, the staff, the service, the food & wine: THE VERY BEST.

1. The front Lawn where many photos were taken was like a "Green", no ondulations though but well spiked by the numerous high heels worn today & me included (bright red ones!!! us "ladies" had to walk on our tip toes... ). In the background is the Golf Course & the spreading Essex countryside with beautiful Autumn colours.

2. Dining Room: spacious, light, elegant, stylish, warm, beautifully decorated, a huge fireplace (yes, bigger than Royal Blackheath's) with a glowing fire.

3. Sitting Room/Drawing rooms (???): equally elegant & attractive, yes another huge & "live" fireplace, very comfortable seating & quiter place to chat, sit, make acquaintances, flirt (NO, not allowed today, well can't remember), have a rest from the dance floor etc....

The front of the building has steps up to the reception hall, a wide terrace from the front to the lawn, with smart furniture but today unfortunately ,it was a little cold to make use of the terrace.

I shall return to Stock Brook Manor in the very near future, but this time with a different attire, my golf attire, I am certain that some good deals will be had, so watch out for postings, come & join : the golf course is made of 3 loops of 9 holes, it offers a challenging game in a pleasant surround. The reception will be friendly & the food is excellent. The practice facilities are the best around (read previous reviews).

Stock Brook Manor lives up to its name whether it is golf or special events.

THE END....... of a special review.
PS: if anyone wants to know what was on the Menu.... send me a private message & I shall respond.

Lady Lockwood returns to the Manor............Monday 13 Aug 2012

Stock Brook is memorable as it was there that I posted my 1st ever TSG game (26.01.2012) as a "newie", lone golfer in Essex, but I suppose I cannot say that any more as I have not stopped putting games up since....
What would I be doing if I was not having fun on the golf course & writing my reviews & planning the next game ????

So to return & play a 2nd time, in better weather was a great opportunity for a good score & another enjoyable round of golf. I would have won (as DJ so rightly said) if I had played my own game & not listened to others, I should know better.....a lesson to be learned.

Stock Brook is a very pleasant place to play golf in a superb setting, lovely well established parkland, wide fairways in excellent condition, and nice views of surrounding fieldS in this lovely county.

The greens have the most interesting shapes and ondulations, curving in & out, sloping down, but today the condition s was not the best as they were being treated and it did make our efforts in getting the ball in the hole in the least strokes rather difficult, but it was the same for everyone playing that day.... Yes there were a few unfortunate encounters where the little pink ball (mine) should have happily gone in the hole, but did not, due to the "summer dressing", but in a few weeks it will be superb and I shall return very soon.

Water & sand in the right places, charming little Par 3s, I shall mention the 4th where each of our ball took a dive, but 2nd attempt was lucky (well for most of us!).

I like the design of the course as each hole is a challenge, some look easy but the greens with their lovely curves/ondulations,tiers can be quite treacherous.

Large Car Park. Again I managed to park in the Members Only, but quickly realised I should not be there.

Outside the ProShop, there is a large wooden/glass octogonal building for changing/storing one's shoes & a drink dispensing machine and another building accommodating the Men & Women's rooms.

The proper changing rooms are downstairs and the Spa/Sauna facilities can be used as well.

A friendly Bar/Restaurant.

Excellent food, we had a very appetising "Ploughman" lunch, well presented & delicious & a drink in our deal. Thanks DJ for organising things so well....

NOW I MUST MENTION THE PRACTICE FACILITIES:

The very best I have ever encountered: open air driving range, a super fast practise putting green, running downhill and the "creme de la creme" was the chipping/pitching/bunkers area laid out as a proper little Par 3, with Tee boxes, flag, bunkers etc.. truly wonderful and will certainly sharpen one's short game if ventured there more often.... If only it was nearer my home, I would practice my drills every day....

The Manor itself is impressive with opulent & light rooms, large outside terrace overlooking this beautiful Essex golf course.

Also a perfect venue for a wedding reception, and that is where I shall be sometimes in October this year when I shall proudly adorn my "Mother of the Groom" outfit (Red & Black) instead of my golfing gear..... but one never knows, I might do a quick change of clothes
(but my golf clubs might get confiscated for a few days, well I have been warned...).

Good experience - will plan to return another day, when the greens are greener!

Altogether a pleasant experience, these guys are genuinely pleased to see you and bend over backwards to make the day special.

Clubhouse is imposing, and food + service is sublime.
There's even a spa available should you feel the need for massage.

This is a maturing parkland course, with subtle water hazards to catch you out when you least expect it (and some large expanses of water).

Good use of available geography, makes for an interesting walk, and there's a good view from most positions on the course. Out in the countryside there's a fine array of wildlife for those who are distracted from the golf. Plus side - fairways were long running, primary cut of rough was enough to hide the ball from all but close up view, so keep an eye on the flight and path of your errant shots. Water (lakes, brooks, ponds and ditches' cleverly incorporated into a rather nicely laid out course.

Some 'feature holes' would test all levels... on the less than positive side, the greens had mainly been treated with some combination of compound that made them less that free running or true... so not too many long/mid range putts made. Greens were undulating and some near-impossible long putt chances were presented...

There are some gentle hills, so the odd gradient is there to confuse and confound - buggies are available if required...

Locals were friendly here, the venue is special, must return when the greens are greener...

Rather splendid practice facilities, good chipping and pitching provision, driving range and undulating practice putting green, rather slicker than out on the course - it has to be said.

Best Value on the day

Course is a nice mix of open fairways and tight holes... you;d be surprised at which ones catch you out. It looks that the yardages are underestimated with a large number of uphill greens, despite the rainfall that previous night the course presented itself well, was well marshalled and well signposted...

Greens are worth the money alone, nicely receptive, subtle and not so subtle contours... chances for long putts and enough of a challenge to keep your interest.

Post-round hsopitality was par excellence...

Will go back in summer

I have played here a few times before, and nothing has changed.
A good test of golf, interesting mixture of holes, fairways, had plenty of run and good condition, the greens looked quite nice for January.
Played on another T.S.G game (16 PLAYERS)Great company again, the only draw back we played all temp.tees and greens could not see the reasoning behind this as we where allowed trolleys, and the greens where not frozen.
SOMETHING TO WATCH OUT FOR IN FUTURE WINTER VISITS
good food and CLUB HOUSE a bit pricey though thats what you pay for at a Country Club.
The parking can be a bit awkward at times,as this is a popular venue.

A real treat. Well worth the visit

An excellent course, and a fair test of golf...a real golf course. Excellent fairways, quite generous, and big greens, beautiful to putt on...true and fairly slick, and they hold, which is more than I can say for most courses I play.. Lots of undulations to keep you thinking. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this course, and hope it's not the last time.
Food - a ploughmans lunch was one of the best I have had, and the staff were very friendly and efficient.
One nice touch I wish all courses had...there is a dedicated facility for changing your shoes outside reception, which is also where you can buy water and other drinks.
Altogether a very good experience.
