Jewel in West Surrey

A great little parkland course deep in a suburban enclave which if you weren’t looking for it you would miss it. Not very long but challenging in its quirky way. Despite all the rain, a few days for dry warm weather made the course play hard and difficult to hold ball on the green. I can only guess that the drainage is very effective. The great thing about the course not being long is that you can get round it in short order as we played after work (5:30) and got round in just over 3hours.. great a full game in after work

An unexpectedly good and enjoyable challenge

The course is located in Hersham, Surrey! It's a short drive from Burhill and Silvermere golf clubs!

This is a clubhouse that I have visited many times over the years as it's a good place for food and Sky TV, but never played!

I'd heard that it was a course of two playing characteristics! This turned out to be the reality!

The course is a short par 67, 5301 and 5105 yards from the white and yellow tees respectively! The slope index is low at 113/112 when compared with cherry Lodge 66f

The shortage of the course is explained by there being 6 par 3s, 11 par 4s and only 1 par 5!

I was fortunate to see a game invitation from Rory O'Malley in mid May 2022 !

My first round was a gross 91/25pts however my score reflected the difference between the characteristics of the two 9s, ie +17 and +7!

The first hole is a severe left to right dogleg but the green can be blocked out to a tight right drive! A triple bogey 7 followed by 4 consecutive double bogeys represented a torrid debut! Fortunately the back 9 of +7 restored faith!

Rory kindly invited me to play it again the following week!

Conditions were wet and windy to start the front 9! Unfortunately the pattern of my first round repeated itself, ie 2 triple bogeys and a quadrupole bogey!

However the game's fortunes changed for me for the back 9, in particular making a hole-in-one on the 145 yards 12th, and a +3 back 9 overall with the -2 eagle complimented by 3 pars and 5 bogeys!

I clearly need to focus on the front 9 of the course but is it something easily remedied! I currently have similar scoring difficulties on the front 9 at Cherry Lodge, which I attribute to a combination of not warming up on the range and a belief that the first 5 or 6 holes are my most difficult holes!

The green fee for seniors was about £22! Excellent vfm!

The clubhouse shares the facility with a driving range and a crazy putting course! There is a small but thriving membership but it is mostly operated on a pay and play basis! Tee times need to be booked!

Cheers
Michael

Really nice course

Great little woodland course with great facilities.

Would like to see the fairways cut a little shorter.

Greens were slow

Hersham re-visited, very pleasantly surprised by. Improvements, maturity...

Well it was a very long time since I played this course, in fact before I joined this friendly on-line community that is TheSocialGolfer. I used to play a few times a year with a local golf society.

The course is short, but well laid out, well looked after, challenging, beautiful greens with interesting shapes/undulations, it has certainly matured well over the years. The holes described as plain by some previous reviewers have certainly filled up, yes they are more open but it will give you a chance to use the biggest clubs in the bag These holes (13 to 16) have some very pretty sights of the back of leafy Esher with wonderful big houses and a few fields for horses to graze and train. Sights you cannot possibly imagine if you are not golfing at Hersham Village.

The first 12 and last 2 holes are. well established parkland with good challenges including ponds with water fountain & ditches better avoided. Very pleasant indeed, the only nuisance at this autumnal time is the yellow & brown leaves on the side of the fairways making it pretty impossible to find your errand golf ball......

Warm reception and friendly staff all around.
Large Car Park and a Safari Park for children (no real animals though).

The Proshop has been relocated in the new building/extension of the left hand side of the original Clubhouse. A pleasant design including lots of natural light, a restaurant etc..... There are two large seating areas outside.

A chipping, putting area. A large driving range.

Well worth a visit, and reasonable rates from £19 to £22 weekday,

Can be tricky to find as it is tucked away at the end of very private late but GPSs will guide you there.

Will return but I imagine that it can be a "wettish" winter course.

Interesting shortish course

First nine a good challenge, second nine a bit straight and dull, but course in good condition, staff friendly a fun day all round would revisit.

Good value course

Very warm welcome in the pro shop. However, with the abundance of rain around the country over the past month or so, it's fair to say that I probably didn't see the course at its best.

With only one par 5, the course isn't long, but it is pretty tight, especially through the front 9, so don't come here expecting an easy round.

I hope to go back in the summer and see how it plays with dry fairways.

Decent Course

Some interesting holes to start with, but the later holes from about 12 to 17 seem to be just back to back open fields. However, this said, that does add variety offering crowded greens/fairways to start and then open holes once you've settled in.
