The Hertfordshire Golf Club

The Hertfordshire Mmmm Its been 11 years since last played here and to be honest not much has changed.
When phined up to book they gave me a price if £28. Posted that on line and when i turned up to pay thet wanted £31. Only £3 difference i know but there was no discrepancies., if it wasnt on the computer they cant do anything. Just like talking to robots.
The course? Very well maintained for November was in excellent nick, greens supurb plenty of sand in bunkers although tee boxes need some work and a few fairways damaged by the dry summer we have had. All in all not bad but didnt think it was 31 quid worth more like £20. 7 out of 10 and will probably give it another 11 years

On a lovely sunny afternoon, this course was a pleasure to play. Well looked after tee boxes, lush fairways and superb greens. The lady in the halfway hut was great fun, plenty of banter with us golfers. The beautiful stately clubhouse was also superb. I had wanted to play this course for such a long time, why did I leave it so long. I definitely will be back !!

There appears to be two distinct section to The Hertfordshire. Holes 1 to 11 are open parkland and generally the fairways are pretty forgiving. From the 12th onwards the trees start to encroach and the greens start to get a little (or a lot) trickier to hit. The best looking holes on the course are to be found through this latter stretch, with some lovely looking par 3's over water.

For whatever reason, the day I played here the yellow tees had all been moved up to the red and even the blue tees, so I certainly didn't see the course at it's toughest. The greens had also been sanded and spiked, although that didn't stop them from being very quick.

The tees and fairways were in decent condition given the time of year, and I imagine that in the summer months they, along with the greens, will all be very good.

Overall the course itself is nice enough, but I would only likely want to play it again if it were far closer to where I live.

As for the rest of the complex, the clubhouse is set within an 18th century mansion, and very pleasant inside it is too. There's also a large covered driving range.

Tired and under funded,lousy bunkers with 1/2" sand then solid clay.

The course was in excellent condition and provided a tough challenge for me on the day. The greens were in excellent condition and there were a number of holes with challenging tee shots.

First time I have played the course and loved it.Club house very small but staff are very friendly.The fairways were in very good condition greens were fast and true with lots of undulations.Cost was £26 this was TSG rate for a bank Holliday.

Broxbournebury Mansion, dating back to 1086, dominates the view as you drive in, but a look to the right hand side will give a preview of the finishing 'stretch'. There's a lot of history here which is now home to a Jack Nicklaus design course, popular with members and societies.

Good practice facilities with a driving range, small chipping area and excellent putting green. You'll get a friendly welcome in the well stocked Pro shop.

The first 12 holes are quite open and will offer some good scoring opportunities to those who keep their ball out of trouble. A good mix of short/longer holes so most clubs in the bag will be needed. The rough can be punishing, so a provisional ball is advisable if in doubt. This is Hertfordshire countryside at its best with some inviting views.

There is a long walk to the 13th tee, where the course changes character. Much more demanding with good course planning essential to score well, as you're now amongst the forest and lakes. The 15th is a delightful short downhill par-3 with water in front and left. Take an extra club, but there's always that 'hold your breath' moment until the ball lands on 'terra firma'! The walk down and across the bridge can then be enjoyed ... a scene which in summer, I think, resembles one from a Monet painting.

If able to play from 'white' tees, the course presents a tougher challenge, indicated by the SSS on the scorecard which increases from 68 to 72 (par 70). If a good score is achieved, you'll know that you have played very well here!

I found the course in excellent condition throughout, with very good greens and shall look forward to playing here again.

Set in the wild of Hertfordshire, the old Manor house is a n impressive venue for this social and sporting centre. Tennis courts and pool/gymnasium make this a popular venue for more than just the golfing community. Consequently car-parking can be a little confused.

Pro shop is well appointed in the Manor House, and friendly. All of the locals are welcoming and it is a nice area to visit (adjacent to the Paradise Wildlife Park).

Course itself is well laid out - but crosses the main road a couple of times and caution is advised. There are some fabulous views to be enjoyed and enough hazards, be they sand, water or long grass to keep your attention focussed.

Most holes are tree-lined and some are quite tight, but sensible play will reap its own reward. The last 4 holes have you flirting with the lake and the Geese who 'own the approaches'. Lots of wildlife to avoid, plenty of spring chicks to distract you.

All in all though this is a good challenge for high and low handicappers alike... but you would need to be pretty straight to keep out of trouble.

I didn't have time to stop and enjoy the cuisine but from memory it was always good.

Not bad, but nothing to rave about. First 12 are standard open parkland and the last six are a little more tricky through the trees where you need to keep it straight and away from the water that is there. I will play again, but I will not be rushing.
