Essex course worth playing, its a lovely course

Was not too sure what to expect as some courses in Essex are fairly average, this does rank higher. After 2 holes I was admiring the views, tree lines and then the course started to just get better. Overall very enjoyable, and would definitely go back. Some quirky holes, and in places it was a good golfing venue. If you have not played here and you live in Essex, you need to.

This is a top course always maintained well

West Essex Golf Course in Chingford E4 is an 18 hole Parkland Course on undulating land. The front nine is quite hilly and tight the back nine more open and flat but watch out for the last few holes they will test your fitness. Excellent condition with fairways like carpets and fast greens. Nice views of the City skyscrapers from the elevated tees. Clubhouse has everything for the hungry and thirsty golfer and quality changing room/ shower facilities. If you haven’t played it you won’t be disappointed.

Mature and pretty...

West Essex Golf Club is a course I've wanted to play for a long time, and it was well worth the wait!

Tucked away from the madding crowds of northeast London with views overlooking Canary Wharf and the West End of London, this course has it all.

With beautiful fairways, testing Greens, and a varied layout, this course is a must for everyone in the area.

The Clubhouse is modern and light with friendly staff.

In addition, Jamie in the PRO shop couldn't have been more welcoming.

He advised me on the best way to approach the course as someone who had not played it before and told me where not to use the driver!

The course is very well maintained with pretty tee boxes and lush fairways.

However, it's a tale of two halves. The front 9 is tight and requires straight drives. But the back nine opens up, giving a little more forgiveness to the higher handicapper.

Not overly long, the course is very walkable (with some inclines) but watch out for "Cardiac Hill" on the 18th hole!

Primarily a 'Members' Club, I played at Guest rates (£35) which was very reasonable.

Too many hills for my dodgy knees

A lovely parkland style course and with the recent dry weather in very good condition. Fairways were hard and the ball ran or bounced a long way, but one has to watch out for the slopes. A few times my drive went on one side of the fairway, but by the time it stopped it was on the other side with a poor shot to the green. Greens were very true with a good few deceptive burrows and fast downhill, but surprisingly slow when putting uphill. But I got the hang of them in the end. However, there are too many steep slopes on this course for my knees/legs. I've played it once and I won't be in a hurry to play it again because of the hills.

Fantastic clubhouse, changing area, bar and food. It was a corporate day so I can't comment on prices.

Enjoyably Challenging Course - Recommended

West Essex is a challenging parkland course; which is quite undulating in places. There are numerous blind landing areas from tee shots; tight lines; sloping fairways; trees and uphill approach shots to tricky greens.

I played the course in April 2017; the course and greens were in excellent condition. Expect faster greens during peak summer conditions.

I entered the London Amateur Open; a new stableford competition for Men, Seniors, Ladies and Juniors; unusual to incorporate all of these categories in the same event. Keep an eye out on Golf Empire for details of next years competition.

The competition entry fee was £40 inclusive of tea/coffee on arrival, 18 holes and a post match meal. Excellent VFM if compared with visitor green fees.

The facilities all round were very good, food and staff attention were excellent. Play it if you can.

West Essex a course of two characters

Easy enought o locate this West Essex golf course, semi rural, which has been designed almost in two halvers, the first 9 full of undulations, clever holes, good layout and challenging (tight and tricky - favouring a conservative approach). The second 9 is more open, less undulating (until the 18th( favouring the bigger hitters...

Clubhouse facilities are excellent, breakfast was included and well worth waiting for. Service with a smile before and after golf. Note this facility has no spike bar so proper shoes please. Adequate parking at this easy to accesa course,

Fairways - although a few seasonal leafage abounded) were playable and not at all soggy, I didn't lose sight of a ball m bunkers were strategically placed to catch the unwary - although sand was a but heavy they were playable. Greens had been well kept, perhaps a little too fluffy BUT they play fairly at reasonable pace and it was possible to hold approach shots on most greens.

This course is worth a visit, probably will provide better and more panoramic views in Spring/Summer/Autumn, lthough not too many notable holes the overall experience is that it is well worth the trip. Good practice facilities and pleasant locals.

Good value quirky Braid design

Up and down a lot, playing over hedges and back across the green you've just come off are some of the features of this James Braid design, but it's a fair test with varied holes which can yield a good score. The clubhouse was quiet when we visited and, though it has grand aspects, the visitors' locker rooms are a real let-down.
