DESCRIPTION:

Nestled in 250 acres of beautiful countryside Merrist Wood Golf Club is renowned as one of the bestGolf Courselayouts in Surrey. All the green were constructed and are maintained to USGA specification. The course designer, David Williams and at nearly 7,000 yards the course is one of the longest in Surrey. When played from our championship tees it offers a real challenge to golfers of any standard. There are forward tees on all holes but with the white tees at 6,600 and yellow tees at 6,300 it still offers a

Water comes into play on 5 of the holes and strategically placed bunkers can catch wayward shots so there is a premium on keeping the ball straight on this testing golf course. The 17thHole is the most picturesque; A long par 4 with a huge lake off the tee, the tiger line requires a carry of over 200 yards. Well-positioned bunkers and a well-shaped green make this hole one of the best.

In WWII, a Halifax Bomber on its first operational sortie (referred to as a Nursery Raid),was mistakenly shot downby an RAF night fighter. The bomber went down withtwo starboard engines blazingand the night sky was illuminated for miles around. A witness noted that it was,'like a large flaming torch in thesky from the Hog's Back to Wood Street'. There is a memorial on the course tocommemorate the downed aircraft and crew, where a wreath is traditionally laid every year on Remembrance Day.

Good day out to test the whole of your game

I usually enjoy a round at Merrist.
Plenty of opportunity to practice the long shots as many of the fairways are quite open. Lot's of interest too and bunker protection, to make the short game interesting as well.

Its ok

Merrist wood was an ok course, and reasonable value at £21, but i probably won't be back as its just too far from where i live, and it's a long troll round the m25 for just an ok experience. I would play there again if i lived closer. Greens pretty good, bunkers rock hard, fairways ok, rough is harsh.

Enjoyable course despite very wet conditions in places

Merrist Wood GC is a parkland style course located in Worplesdon, Guildford, Surrey. The course is a part of the Crown Golf portfolio of courses. It is a proprietary pay and play venue with a playing membership. It is a low key playing oasis surrounded by a host of the highest profile members clubs in Surrey, yet alone England/GB & I.

The course is a par 72, 6,285 yards off the Yellow tees, used on the day! There are 4 par 3s, 10 par 4s and 4 par 5s. A standard course configuration! The 9th and 18th greens are just in front of the clubhouse, ideal for a two tee start for competitions/societies etc.

The course opened in 1997, was designed by David Williams. He was also the designed of Surrey National, Westerham, Clandon Regis, Woolston Manor, Chartham Park and Broke Hill (now permanently closed), courses that are likely familiar to fellow TSGers!

Merrist Wood is a well laid out course. The 1st, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th holes involve carries over either ponds or water filled ditches! The par 4s/par 5s, are generally straight drives though 7th, 13th and 18th involve doglegs, though the bigger hitters can shorten the holes by cutting corners over trees. High risk first time out but not so much once you know what you are hitting into!

The 4th and 15th fairways are littered with bunkers awaiting overhit/wayward drives.

Most approaches to the greens are challenging due to their protection by bunkers and water. Greens are large, undulating and have numerous possible pin positions; and while showing signs of recovery from spiking/sanding, they were generally in good condition, but difficult to judge line/pace.

Played in mid December, while the weather was dry and overcast, after recent heavy rains, some of the fairways were very wet. The 1st and 18th holes were the soggiest in places. On the day unfortunately aI forgot to bring my Driver and 3 Wood, so my 5 Wood became my driver for all of the par 4/5s. This severely limited my distances off the tees and my potential scores!

The green fee was £24. OK under normal conditions but I would have hoped for a reduction to about £18 to £20 given the course conditions!

The bar and pro-shop staff were very helpful. The pregame catering options were very limited due to the catering being short of one of their chef's; though a generous portion of beans on toast and a sandwich was enjoyed at a reasonable price!

All being said this is an excellent course layout that is adversely affected by wet winter conditions.

April 2016....avoid this dump!

Having been a regular at merrist wood in the last 2 or 3 years i looked forward to our visit on friday. But what a disgrace. Apart from the lovely friendly girls behind the bar, i dont have a positive to say....
- worst greens i have played...cored by stevie wonder i think and then random sand thrown sporadically around
- didnt see a fairway depsite straight drives - some long semi rough was all i saw where the fairway should have been
- rude pro shop...refused to acknowledge a tsg deal and very unhelpful when god forbid...i wanted to buy something!!!
- tee boxes were mainly flat but longer than the "fairway" grass
- course parts roped off but no work done on the roped bits
- cleveland wedge now has a hole from the bunker based with slabs

When we asked about tsg deal...it was like asking to borrow their aston martin for a joy ride...

AVOID THIS PLACE...MILFORD IS 10 MINS AWAY AND AWESOME CONDITION AND FRIENDLY PROS.

Great Fun and will be happy to go there again

First time there and enjoyed the course. Luckily I had somebody with me who had played there before so he could outline the problem holes. Some long par 4's which are challenging and a couple of hard par 3's. Friendly welcome and good service at the 19th.

Risk and reward on most holes.

Eighteen very different holes with a good walk over a decent layout. Many bunkers to fairways and protecting greens.Water comes into play with ponds, small lakes and ditches/streams cleverly placed.Thought with club selection important and a decent putter will help on fast tricky greens. Some excellent golf holes worth playing.A crown golf members club and it shows on and off the course.

Worth a visit

I found the course to be in great condition. The fairways didn't seem to have the issues that other reviewers have mentioned, and the greens especially were looking good. The one area I did think the course let itself down on was in the bunkers, where the sand was very compact just under the surface and maybe needed a good raking.

The fairways are generally wide, there is lots of water and bunkers around, and the course is quite long for the shorter hitters.

I prefered the holes on the back 9, especially the short par 4 12th with the lake in front of the green, the par 3 16th, and the 17th which has a lot of water in front of the tee. If you don't hit it long then there is a baleout area to the right, and it doesn't really cost you much if you choose to aim that way.

The clubhouse was very plush, and they have excellent practise facilities.

We got a really good deal to play, and I would have no hesitation in going back again.

Good, varied course, would recommend a visit

Good course, quite tough for a novice with plenty of bunkers and also gulleys (mainly water traps) running across quite a few of the fairways. Best point was that all holes are different, no 'back and forth', and good to see maintenance being carried out on a number of holes as we were going round.

Only stayed for a quick drink afterwards, but no complaints about the clubhouse from what I saw ... nice-looking, clean and tidy.

Standard weekday round £33, weekends £40. Would recommend to any that haven't already tried it.

SAME AGAIN

My opinion of this course is very much the same as it was in Sep09. Excellent layout, greens, tees and bunkers in very good nick but the fairways are TERRIBLE - preferred lies need to be a permanent feature really. Despite this it does remain one of my preferred Crown courses.

Agree with Rodger. This course has fantastic potential, only let down by the condition of the fairways. Other than that, would definitely recommend.

CONUNDRUM!

A bit of a conundrum this one. A really nice layout with some very attractive holes. Greens and aprons in excellent condition. Fairways and green surrounds very poor - bare in some places, patchy grass in others - plenty of dodgy lies to be found. As a Crown member I would definitely return but it is a shame that the course is not being shown off to its best. Good clubhouse and practice facilities.

Merrist Wood

Nice course with good club house and practise facilities, including driving range, bunker and chipping practise area and putting green.
Fairly long even off yellows (6286yds) and in nice condition EXCEPT the greens were like beaches when we played (end April 09). Greens let the whole place down-furrowed and sandy. Hopefully in a month or two and with some seriuos work they'll improve, only then would the course would be worth another visit.

Greens & Fairways

Well where do i start, fairways could do with some grass and alot of the greens are in such a bad state, we should be paid to play on them.

Greenkeepers should stop chopping down tress and concern themslves with the state of their greens, also players need to start using pitch repairs, otherwise you will loose all your vistors after 1 visit
