DESCRIPTION:

Nestled in the heart of the Surrey countryside, The Drift Golf Club offers a tranquil yet challenging golfing experience just a short drive from London. Established in 1975, this 18-hole, par-73 parkland course was designed by Sir Henry Cotton and architect Robert Sandow, combining strategic play with beautiful surroundings. Measuring just under 6,500 yards, the course features mature trees, gently undulating fairways, and well-placed bunkers that provide a fair test for all levels of golfer. Water hazards add complexity to several holes, especially the picturesque 8th and 18th. The Drift also boasts extensive practice facilities, including a short game area, putting green, and driving range. Its modern clubhouse includes a pro shop, bar, and restaurant with panoramic views over the course—ideal for relaxing after a round or hosting private events. Known for its immaculate condition and welcoming atmosphere, The Drift Golf Club is a hidden gem in Surrey and a must-play for golf enthusiasts.

Relatively boring

A well presented and prepared course but spoilt by too many par 4’s that are essentially identical in structure. The 18’th is a gem of a hole.

ok thats all

I had heard a lot about this course so was expecting a little more than we got.
Poor fairways some under repair( we were not warned or had a reduction on price).
Greens were ok though.
It just felt a bit samey all the way round with straight par fours.
Not sure I would hurry back at that price.

Lovely condition

I'll start with the positives, and there are lots which spring to mind. The fairways, tees, and greens were in great condition, and a real pleasure to play on. The clubhouse is all you can ask for, and there's a real nice driving range to warm up on. No matter where you on the course, there are no outside influences like nearby houses or noise from local roads. In fact, everywhere is peace and tranquillity. It almost seems like the perfect golf course.

The downside, and my playing partners and I all agreed on this, is that the holes are all a bit samey. Pretty much all of the fairways are tree lined, and while they maybe aren't narrow, they are certainly closer to narrow than they are generous. If you do find the trees though, mostly you won't have to look too hard to find your ball.

The back 9 is probably a little bit nicer than the front, but we came away thinking that few holes stuck in the memory.

Would I recommend The Drift to others? I'm certain I would. Like I said earlier, find the fairways and greens and you'll be playing on quality turf, and none of the holes are bad. Would I rush back to play it again? I tend to prefer courses that allow for a bit of leniency from the tee, and there are other courses which spring to mind with a wider variety of holes, so maybe I wouldn't exactly rush back.

Tight Fairways

Nice course layout. Need to shape the ball both ways. True test of your golf.

Tight parkland course

Played an off peak weekday round for £25.00 after 14:00. Lot of quite tight tree lined holes, though ball was relatively findable if you strayed into them. Not a course to belt the driver on a lot of holes, though for accurate big hitters a few blind driveable greens off the yellow tees. Worth a visit.

Peaceful & Full of promise...(A little bit of "Pine Ridge" & "Gatton Manor")

The Drift Golf Course is a very peaceful place, one is totally surrounded by mature woodlands & wildlife. Lots of pheasants (part of the emblem) can be seen & heard, also present deers & foxes.

The only building you see is the Clubhouse and maybe one cottage during the whole round.

We are at the foot of the North Surrey Hills (M25 J10 + A3 Effingham turnoff).

Fairly flat, but a few inclines which my new electric trolley was happy to travel on, with me, the proud owner: what a wonderful thing to have, but my God, it is expensive, I remember buying my 1st car, Triumph Herald Convertible, WMK90G, for the same price!!!!!

The new owner of the Drift is spending a lot of money on improvements, specially drainage. There is plenty of evidence as the Greenkeepers are hard at work with their machinery or filling up trenches already dug, quite a lot of GUR which can be a nuisance or work to one's advantage wtih a free drop.

Must mention the adorable little dog keeping the workers company, happy & well trained but quite eager to run after your ball, should he have a chance. But all under control.

The rewards of the ongoing work will make the Drift an even more enjoyable experience very soon.

THE FAIRWAYS are wide & atractive with lovely short grass, mature trees ( mix of pines, oaks etc). There was quite a lot of dew early this morning but it got really hot after 10.30am.

A few TIGHT places along the way.

Lots of interesting holes with WATER, ponds or streams & ditches.

The true pleasure was THE GREENS: excellent, superb, tip top conditions, as one says "very true". Nice shapes & ondulations.

BUNKERS, well placed & interesting, nice sand, seem to drain well.

FAVOURITE HOLE: I shall only describe one as I dont want to make my review too long, so the lucky chosen hole is:

HOLE 3, Par 3, 164/130 yrds, a beautiful scenery to inspire any artist with a brush & easel. A first pond on the right of the path leading to an elevated Tee box, a wooden bench to admire the landscape, wait your turn or just rest or dream etc.... The Tee shot is over a 2nd pond full of vegetation, one can see moorehens with babies, butterflies, dragon flies etc.... The Green has a figure of 8, sloping back to front with 2 deep bunkers on either side. Got a Par....

CAR PARK: large, well laid out.

PRACTICE: open driving range with yardage flags, chipping/sand area, 2 practice putting greens

PRO SHOP: Friendly, good stock but did not see any attire for Lady Golfers, shame as I like buying golf clothes, accessories etc...

LADIES CHANGING ROOMS: modern & plesant, a big sink on the floor to wash the golf shoes.

Several BARS, LOUNGES, DINING AREAS, with reasonable prices for drinks or food. We had to wait a bit for our "Chicken Chilly Wraps" as the handsome young bar person got confused with "Wraps" & "Baps" !!!! his Manager was not too happy.

Large terrace/patio area overlooking the 1st, the 18th in the distance and 1 of the practice putting green. One part of the terrace area is covered by a massive parasol made of 3 sections joined together, attractive design & good quality.

Flower pots on the wall surrounding the terrace with colourful summer flowers.

MEMBERS friendly & happy, very proud of the ongoing improvements, & patient.

The DRIFT is full of promise, it should be visited now and later.

THAT IS ALL FOR TODAY ....

Just about to join a game for the coming weekend with my new trolley.
