A cracking course!!

I played the Edinburgh course at Wentworth recently. The clubhouse was as expected . . Immaculate. Had a nice lunch in there before hitting the driving range to warm up. All free practice balls and with latest technology to allow you to assess your ball striking.

Course was in tip top condition and a really enjoyable round.

Got it for nothing which was brilliant.

If you get a chance to play here - do!

Lovely course and some tricky holes to keep you on your toes! Bacon sandwiches at the half way house were excellent.

Walk down the Hall of Fame

You enter Wentworth by a long drive lined with Rhodadens.
The Porsche just sat perfectly in the car park.
Fantastic practice facilities with lavish changing rooms, pro shop & club.
Gently undulating fairway gives each hole its own distinctive appearance. Characteristic of the layout are several dog-leg holes that lead you through corridors of Pine & Birch trees, with fairway bunkers & lateral ditches, so course management comes into play. With fast tricky greens.
There are some long walks between green to tee, but this give you more of the Wentworth expertise.
After the round came the shopping in the Pro shop. Well I’ve never seen anything like it of course I bought a ball marker and then walked down the Hall of Fame. Take time and stop at the various golf clubs on the wall, donated by the world’s top golfers Seve,Faldo,Westwood just to name a few.
Then into the bar and sat down outside looking over the practise green it was a perfect end to a perfect day.
Many thanks to Anna

edingburgh course wonderful

Well what can you say, lucky enough to play the Edingburgh course with Anna and Dave sunday.
When you stand on the first tee it is absolutely fantastic. Fairways are like carpets, greens are quick true and wonderful, Scenery is fantastic, there is nothing not to like about this course. Every hoe has a charm and a look even a bog standard par 4 straight down. If you get a chance play it it is worth the walk alone.

Hole in One...............

Our 4-balls was lucky enough to be @ the right place, @ the right time: we shared the customary drink with one of the members (John) who got a hole in one @ the 17th, Edinburgh course....the signature hole I think, a truly beautiful short par 3 over a large lake and well protected by bunkers. Some so us managed a Par.....

Course in fantastic condition, greens very faaaaasssssstttttt.....

A very pleasant round on an empty course & enjoyable to watch the last of the Foursome Ryder Cup with lots of blue on the board , sharing drinks & food and planning next year trip abroad.......

One of the finest courses I have played

Very fortunate to play the Edinburgh course on a beautifully sunny day, with great company. The course is as expected, beautifully manicured fairways, almost criminal to make a divot, and the greens...well too good and so very tricky with subtle contours and of course, very slick - a real challenge. Only criticism was with the bunkers which were very hard beneath half an inch of sand....and I found a few. A lovely smell of pine pervaded throughout, and a short stay at the halfway house made it a great day. The clubhouse is all I expected with a very understated elegant atmosphere, but not at all stuffy, although, felt a bit inadequate with all the Lambo's and Bentleys in the car park, when I arrived in a 'van' with wing mirror held together with Postman type elastic bands. Memorable day.

Everything you would expect

Played the original east course.
Very nice and interesting layout. Quite short, but don't be misled it's tricky. Lots of bunkers, trees and some penal rough. Exceptionally fast, true greens.
Couldn't play the last hole as it is the week before the BMW PGA tournament , and was being used for car parking.
My host was the lovely Anna Guss who as a corporate member gets her fourball to play for £20 each. ( being the reason for top score on value)
Clubhouse OUTSTANDING. Everything you would expect of a club of this standing. Staff courteous , friendly and welcoming. Food excellent especially the coffee albeit a bit pricey.
Had a lovely day and should I be lucky enough to be asked again would hope to play the the other courses

It's Wentworth. Do I really need to say anymore?

I played the East Course on a beautiful day in May, a week before the PGA stars are due to light up the West Course.

As a first time visitor you wonder if the place can match the hype. It does. From the moment you enter the grounds and head towards the clubhouse, you just know.

Just assume that the greens, tees and fairways are all in awesome condition. They are. As for the holes, there's lots of variety. Some longer, some shorter, and I would say that they are mostely all suitable for players of any handicap.

All you need is excellent company to join you here, and in Anna (thank you, thank you, thank you!), Brigitte, and Ian F, I did.

Wentworth? You know you want to!

The East Course...

Only my second visit to Wentworth playing (the first was a privilege) but once again the layout, the clubhouse and service are exceptional. We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the dining area and although £14 a head, I thought is was very good value, beautifully cooked and the coffee was the best I have tasted in years!

The staff are what make this place, they just know how to look after and are always polite and attentive, so many clubs could learn from this.

Meanwhile back to golf, we played the East Course.......

Pine trees line the fairways on this testing but relativity easy design and they make you look forward to the day ahead. Shorter than the Edinburgh but not nearly as well maintained. In fact, I would go as far and say scruffy in places and by no means worth £180 a round. However, that said, the greens ARE superb and the surroundings a joy. And on this occasion the golf wasn't bad either.

Once again I was looked after by our superb host Anna and had the pleasure of The Naked Golfer and new TSGer Clare M for company. To sum up, good service, good golf and did I mention the coffee! :-)

A treat not to be missed

Before you arrive at Wentworth you cannot feel anything but excitement and the clubhouse and course do not disappoint.

From the moment you drive through the palacial gates and along the driveway you are then rewarded with a most beautiful clubhouse that is Wentworth.

Parking is easy and signage excellent.

You will receive a warm greeting at the entrance of the clubhouse by course marshalls and bear left to the pro shop where again, you are given a warm welcome.

Nice touch on entrance is the shoe locker hatch. Every member has their name engraved where their shoes are stored.

The ladies changing room is wall to wall wooden lockers, with a settee area in the centre facing a television and an office area in the corner. Visitors lockers are available for a returnable £1. The shower area supplies free towels and Molton Brown toiletries.

Prior to our round, I was served tea from a silver pot in front of a log fire in the beautiful lounge area, where you can view large glass cabinets showing off the famous major trophies. You truly appreciate just how large they are! Corridors leading to this room are adorned by putters donated by famous professionals. Pure class and truly awesome.

We played the Edinburgh Course which many say is their preference to the West. You are greeted by the friendly course marshall and provided with complimentary logo pencil, ball marker and pitch repairer and guided to the 1st Tee.

It was a quiet day which meant we could truly enjoy the course, view and conditions. This is a course where sensible plotting will reward you with a good score. The greens were slightly woolly, which meant my first putt was punished, as my expectation was I would be putting on an ice rink. This was Wentworth after all, but this was only a minor disappointment. Lesson learned - move on.

The course is stunning, a joy to play and I would recommend anyone who gets the chance to play it to snap it up; book a day off if you can. You will enjoy it.

The 19th hole is casual and inviting with a choice of a decadent menu or simple snack. Crisps and peanuts are complimentary; an added bonus.

Wentworth is a real Red Letter Day experience and more than well worth the visit. I look forward to the next time.

What can I say, it's Wentworth!

Played the East course on what, unfortunately, was a rather wet and blustery day. Not the best conditions to enjoy such a gem of a course with many elevated tees with great views and some long testing par threes. A few shorter par fours to give you good chances for par and possibly birdie. Greens were true and still quite pacey considering all the rain. Would love to go back and play again in better weather, as really could not appreciate the course to the full through rain speckled glasses. Ambience and history of the clubhouse speaks for itself. Thanks again to Anna Guss for the opportunity to play a premier course for a fraction of the normal green fee.

Great course but the greens let it down

Well maintained course however the greens are not what you'd expect from the 'top course' in the UK.

That said the experience and features are legendary.

A real pleasure....

I guess this is one of those courses that you grow up knowing well, having seen it so many times on TV, but where you never think you will actually get to play! So it didn't need much persuasion when one of our newest and VERY popular members Anna posted the game here!

Having arrived early (for once) we enjoyed a refreshing pre-game drink on the main bar patio before heading out on the course. On this occasion, we were playing the Edinburgh course... perhaps not as well known as the West Course but this track proved to be a delight to play!

Our host for the day kindly introduced myself and my fellow lucky invitee (and Queen of TSG course reviews - Ms.Lockwood) to the starter, who kindly explained the course layout and pitfalls of the course before setting off on one of the last good golfing days of the summer.

This course is beautiful!

Thoughtful in its design, it twists and turns through dense woodland but there is plenty of room for even the most wayward driver to enjoy.

There are no specific stand out holes on the course as they are all good and I would compliment the greenkeepers on some fantastically true greens.

Of course, it always helps when you play a course well and so my 37 points on the day made for a pleasant drive home, but on this occasion, the lasting memory will be the superb service, the great location and the pleasant (and glamorous) company!

If you are lucky enough to play here, soak it up - this is the real thing! :-)

What a sodden afternoon....

Played the Edinburgh Course, on a wet, very wet, afternoon, but this was no damp squib, quite the opposite. I am fortunate to have now played almost half of the Top100 courses in England and this is definitely one of my favourites - a majestic parkland layout, in my view better than "the West" and on the same level as Woburn (Dukes) and Sunningdale (New). All the holes are wonderful - the straight ones are long and challenging (some with ditches), the shorter ones are doglegged both ways (13th is a very tight left), the par 3s are attractive and well guarded. The greens were in great condition and still running fast and true despite a good drenching. An unforgettable experience. Particular thanks to Anna Guss who made the round possible and Andy Attard who was only one mad enough to join me!

Birdie @ the 12th.....on the Edinburgh course. A story to be told....

The Story:

A quote from Walter Hagen who said one should always take time to appreciate the surroundings :"never hurry, never worry, and be sure to smell the flowers along the way". This is exactly what we did today on the Edinburgh course and as a result, we somehow missed the 12th hole Par 3, but the course Marshall, Pete M. who was doing his job brilliantly, soon spotted that somewhere, a group has slipped by.... He deserves 5 stars+, such an interesting character too. Ex policeman/House of Commons,etc.... with many tales to tell, with much humour too.

Well, Pete found us on the 14th as we were marking our scores for the previous holes & noticed we skipped the 12th...., as we were enjoying ourselves... taking the surrondings in.. etc. "Don't worry Ladies, carry on with your game, I shall meet you at the 18th, leave your golf bags by the Clubhouse, take a few clubs/putter, I shall take you back to the 12th in the buggy".... Wow, that was a brilliant idea and so unexpected we had to go along with it. Somehow, it felt like we were dreaming, "wicked" would say Charley Hull.

I don't know if it was the steep climb back from the 18th to the Clubhouse or the excitement to travel back in the buggy with the Marshall to the other end of the Edinburgh course to play the missing 12th, but the hearts were beating fiercely. We squeezed into the Wentworth buggy, crossing many fairways, paths, the small 9 hole Executive course where some naughty children were rolling in the sand bunkers, according to a message on the Talkie Walkie, so Pete the Marshall had to attend & sort this out along the way.

Finally got to the famous 12th hole (Par 3) where a 4 ball were getting ready to Tee off, a 2 ball were finishing the 11th and 2 more players following behind.
Pete skilfully managed to fit us in after the 4 ball.

A magnificient hole: "the most demanding short hole on the Edinburgh course".....quote from the elegant/expensive course planner. An elevated tee box where a positive shot is required to reach the shallow raised green with bunkers front & back.

So with the Marshall & the 2 balls watching, I took my biggest club, a decisive meaningful swing & watch my little white ball landing 4 or 5-foot from the pin. A putt for Birdie, on an "unusual finishing hole" @ Wentworth, and it went in. I felt elated as I heard the "clunk" of the ball and the applause from the (small) crowd. A moment I will remember forever. I had the same belief & THOUGHT as Martin Kaymer, Ryder Cup 2012, with his six-foot putt on the 18th green to retain the Ryder Cup for Europe : "Just make it".

The experience would have never happened if it was not for Pete the Marshall and Anna, my new TSG friend. Thank you both. We did celebrate with a lovely drink in the elegant clubhouse. A brilliant day on a brilliant course.

THE EDINBURGH COURSE (I shall try to keep it short)...

The newest of the 3 courses (23 years old), a John Jacobs creation in this stunning mature woodlands, some heathers along the way and bordering some bunkers as on the East course.. A very long course, very though for short hitter but none-the-less extremely enjoyable. Lots of walking in between holes & you need to keep your eyes on the sign posts so as NOT to miss the next hole, it can happen, actually I am glad it happened otherwise there would not have been a story to tell to the TSG family. Favourite holes:

The unforgettable 12th described above.

The 17th, short Par 3 (I very much favour Par 3s as they are the ones with most danger in front or around them). Very picturesque hole over a wide pond full of wildlife, plants & birds, etc. bushes galore, trees, tee shot from an elevated position where you can take all the beauty and inspiration for the shot to land safely on tiered green. I wont be able to describe any more holes as it would make this review too long but each hole is really stunning & challenging, the Autumn light with the warm sun made this course even more appealing. The greens and fairways were excellent, the sand light and soft.

A lovely afternoon to remember and thanks again to all who made it possible (Pete, Anna & the TSG). The End...

(not quite: there was a delivery of 6 brand new Volvo cars, being made today, Sunday 29th Sept 2013. I believe Volvo is sponsoring an Event/Tournament/Golf programme at Wentworth.... will check this out)

THE END!

Absolument M A G N I F I Q U E......

Absolument magnifique and so, so British, I loved it....

Impressive, renown, chic, elegant: a beautiful Surrey location offering 3 golf courses: East, Edinburgh and West (this one requires a 18hdcp or less).

The drive to the Clubhouse and Car Park is a private road bordered by stunning properties, then you see a lake with 2 fountains on your right and the splendid Clubhouse in the distance. Be careful though as this road goes across the 18th fairway of the East course.

Today (14.9.2013) we played the East, the oldest course (1924 Harry Colt creation),it is full of history. This is where in 1926 a friendly match between a US team and GB & I took place and inspired the Ryder Cup tournament that we know today and enjoy supporting. It is also where the inaugural Curtis Cup took place in 1932.

The East course has been created in 200 acres of heathland, a real gem, where position is more important than power. Not overly long compared to the other 2 courses but course will captivate you. I has one of the finest hole of the 3 Wentworth courses: the 11th (Par 4) which I shall describe as it is one of my favourites.

The course zig-zag through woodlands, with ondulating fairways, heather & goarse add to the challenge. Some of the fairway bunkers are bordered by heathers, better to be in the sand that the heathers, actually better to be on the fairway.

Two favourites holes:

7th, Par 3: a tough hole, tee shot over heather & a raised bank that runs sort of diagonally across, the main fairway is on the left, where 2 big bunkers await the stray ball. The borrow is a little tricky.

11th, Par 4, mentioned above, the signature hole, a beauty: drive uphill over rough, quite tight, to reach a plateau from where the green can easily bee seen. If you miss the plateau the fairway slope right and bunkers lie in waiting.

I must mention the layout of the bunkers on the finishing hole: a line of 8 bunkers on the right hand side & 3 huge ones on the left, one gets a spectacular view of the Clubhouse from the green, but only look once holed out.

Clubhouse is beautiful. All staff very polite, helpful, pleasant & friendly, it helps make the day a memorable one.

Car Parks are well signposted: Members, Visitors, East etc...

Driving range is massive and looks like a well kept fairways with markers etc. I believe it is floodlit as well. Each individual bay has a door, with mirror & other training aids. I believe it is also the Taylor made fitting place with all the modern technology.

Proshop is big with lots of equipment and smart Ladies & Men clothing. Course planner is £6 but you get a spiral guide which is quality, waterproof, very well presented with all the measurements & tips. There is a special desk/lobby where a man cleans/stores the Members shoes and this man also has the key to the Ladies changing room for the Visitors.

Ladies changing rooms: delightful, it has the "wow" factor. There is a reception desk, manned at busy times where assistants enter the score cards etc. Lots of mirrors & dressing tables with all the goodies one needs, two large sofas with silky & bright cushions for one's comfort. Lockers available for £1 for visitors. An adjacent area for very modern showers, toilets & sinks with granite surrounds, lighting is superb too. I know a certain lady TSGers that would really appreciate all this.....

Must mention the half way hut, but the 6th: a huge log cabin where one can stop for 5-10 minutes (no more) for sip the rather dear cup of coffee!!!! Other refreshments available.

The Starter Hut: you are welcome by a charming official, that greets you, explains a few things, asks a few question, gives you a scorecard & wishes you an enjoyable round.

A wonderful experience, I feel very privileged to have played a course with such history where some of the greatest golf legends ventured. Wentworth is special, so very British !

What a place.

Absolutely lovely. Set in glorious countyside, with three courses. If all as good as the Edinburgh, then they must all be great.
Edinburgh is a long course, the whites are somewhere just over 7km, but interesting and challenging. Plenty of variation and in superb condition.
Practice facilities looked good, but didn't use them.
Haven't commented on value for money. At seemingly £180-360 for a round, can't see too many playing. If however, you get a chance to play at a sensible rate, then I suggest you really do.
