Course has been closed for years

North weald golf course was sold lock stock and barrel some years ago. Ostensibly for major housing redevelopment, for which planning permission is yet to be submitted ( so nothing on the footprint of the actual golf course). The clubhouse and outbuildings have been redeveloped though.

This is no longer a course that can be played, nature is reclaiming it.

A little disappointing

Overall not the most interesting designed course. Greens were not in the best condition. . . often with bare patches and worm casts. Friendly enough staff . . poor for a members course. If are new to the area spend your green fee on Hainault instead.

Good Layout, Shame About The Greens !!

I really like the layout of North Weald GC, wide fairways, challenging par 3's, severe rough, if you stray offline but, the majority of the greens were awful. Very uneven roll and many holes which were shown up by blue marker paint around them; they were also very bobbly. Once they get these sorted out, then this will be a good course to play for £20.

Fairly open course

I don't think that North Weald will likely be most player's favourite course, but that doesn't mean it should be dismissed totally. The greens, tees, and fairways all looked like they were suffering in this rain-free summer, but they all played okay.

Most of the holes are fairly open with little rough, so play the tricky holes well and you can get a decent score. The tricky holes would probably be the 4th and 10th, if my memory serves me correctly, both of which would be stand out contenders for the nicest holes on the course too.

There isn't a pro shop as such, just a reception area that happens to sell balls, gloves, and tee times. The girl working there was very pleasant and welcoming though.

Reasonable value, nothing special

There's nothing really wrong with this municipal course but there's not a great deal to recommend it either. The greens have been hollow tined but are still playable. It's quite hard to distinguish the fairway from the rough but that's partly because the rough is very short.

My benchmark for public courses is Trent Park which is a much nicer course than North Weald, but you get about 6 hours to appreciate how nice it is on a Saturday round while waiting for the two-ball in front of you to work out which end of the buggy is the front.

I recommend the bacon roll.

Great facilities; OK course

There is a lot to admire about North Weald Golf Club. There is a driving range, chipping green and practice green. The clubhouse is modern, the staff friendly and the breakfast decent. Unfortunately the course does not live up to the first impression. Don't get me wrong. It is a nice layout with several interesting holes. It is the condition that lets it down. It is quite scruffy in places and some of the bunkers are like concrete. The greens definitely need more attention which is a shame because the shapes and contours of the greens are generally very good and interesting. It is however, good value and I would return. If only those greens were like at other places, I would even consider joining as a member....

Good course - condition a bit mixed

Great fun to play after a disappointing first 2 holes. Most of the greens were very hard and difficult to hold the ball from any distance. But a lovely walk and some challenging holes

Could be Better

Not a bad course by any means but it was a bit tatty in places. There were quite a few bunkers that were Ground Under Repair so some bad shots were punished with a free drop. The course has several good holes with water hazards and ditches. The welcome in the clubhouse was good and they offer a loyalty scheme whereby, you play five rounds,(£22.50 each) and then get a free game. I will be playing this course several more times this season. Not bad at all.

..... Update to previous review

Played here today on the £15 'twilight' rate again.

Work has progressed through the summer and many of the rebuilt bunkers have now been filled with new sand and had all been very well raked. Some of the original bunkers don't look as good, so these need new sand as well to give a consistency. Hopefully, the weather this coming winter will not delay the ongoing improvements.

Fairways looked as though they needed a cut, but I found teeing areas and greens more than acceptable for the green fee I paid.

Some areas of the rough have been left to nature.....this has been quite attractively done - just keep out of the long grass!

The previous two reviews mention a problem here in April. Personally, I have always found staff and members very friendly and would reiterate my previous view that North Weald is well worth a visit.

Work in Progress

Previous reviews describe extensive work that is being carried out here and 'wet' conditions are frequently mentioned. It's good to see that development is progressing well and investment in drainage should pay dividends in the future.

Since I last played here in July 2012, some new ponds and ditches have been created which will add new course management challenges. Several bunkers have been dug out for new drainage pipes and a number have been removed, so there is a lot of GUR. Some have been finished and filled with new sand, giving an idea of what they will all be like.

Following several days with no rain, greens were quite fast and, having just been treated with fertiliser, didn't run true but should soon improve if weather allows.

This was a 'twilight' game at £15 (08 April) which we thought good value for money.

Hopefully conditions this spring will allow work to progress quickly, so that Course Quality marks can be raised. When finished, North Weald will have a very good golf course. Meanwhile, it's worth a visit!

Nice course.

Played this course mid feb, looked around for a course my dad could use his trolley, this was lifted the day before, we got arond of golf and lunch witch was pie and chips, was ok, the greens were still frosty on the first 6 holes, no temps, there was alot of work being done around the course eg, bunkers, ditches, the greens had come out the snow with little desease, nice course, would play again when dry, was alittle wet, but we have had alot of snow and rain so was expected.

Course is in the process of development

Picked another perfect day for golf, as usual friendly welcome at this course under development. Lots of work is ongoing (swapping some of those old fairway bunkers for alternative hazards is a good move).

Anyway - there had been some complaints regarding the condition of this course recently, BUT I am delighted to advise that the rough is hewn back, fairways are close mown, greens are still as friendly as ever. Although development work is noticeable - it can be avoided by the thoughtful golfer.

Whilst not being on the face of it 'too difficult' the inclusion of some tight 'out of bounds' markers (where I least expected them) actually worked to improve the overall experience.

OK so some bunkers were devoid of sand, but the course is improved since the last visit. There are some feature holes here... and it remains a good challenge for both High and Low handicappers...

Views are pleasant, trees are maturing/matured... water hazards are always close by...

Adjacent to my usual Driving range and putting area practice facilities are good... and it is pleasant sitting on the upstairs balcony, basking in the afternoon sunshine, overlooking the 18th green.

Catering is good and service is always with a smile.

Nice course, great facilities, penal rough

Not a striking course but very enjoyable with a decent mix of holes (3 par 5's, 4 par 3's) and some interesting greens, but the rough (particularly clover?) made going offline very costly. Three lost balls and I've been a lot further offline! Some areas were still extremely damp (credit for the vast majority of the course being in fine condition) so perhaps it has not been possible to control the rough. Visited a few bunkers which were closer to dry mud than sand and one had a solid crust. Would definitely go back and might keep the driver in the bag until seeing how tough the rough was! Special note for the driving range, chipping area and putting green - first class.

Well kept and a good challenge

Lots of tricky holes, clever use of bunkers (although a little lacking in sand) made this parkland course a good challenge. Very interesting greens, requiring lots of concentration and many traps for the umwary...however a good day ourt on a well kept and well presented course. Good fairways (if you were lucky enough to hit them, conservative play reaps its own rewards).

Club facilities are under development, parking was a nit tight so arrive early. Allied to good driving range and putting green for pre-round warm up...

Good value for money and on a good day it is money well spent...

North Weald

North Weald is excellent, it's settling down after remodelling using dirt from Olympic site but could do with grass instead of weeds on the banking along edge of fairwats.

Some nice holes........

Played here last weekend and didnt have a bad day! The course is still fairly new and is yet to mature properly but I still enjoyed it. There are some nice holes throughout, the greens are well kept and whilst open in places it had a bit of a inland linksy feel to it too. The best holes are saved for the back nine and 16, 17 and 18 are great finishing holes! Nice modern clubhouse, friendly staff and good value at £15 on Sat, all suggesting that I will be back!

Worth a visit.

An interesting course layout with a good and varying mix of holes, some of which are very pleasant on the eye. All of the major landscaping work seems to be finished, a majority of it being in play, just leaving a few areas where "finishing touches" are still GUR.
At the time of our visit i would say the fairways had a good thickness of grass on, the 1st cut of rough is playable, the 2nd cut is best avoided if possible being very thick. The greens run true with several being two tier and most having some wonderful contours to contend with.
A good selection of practise facilities are available, a spike bar is well located for the 1st tee/18th green and practise.
At £15 for a twilight tee from 2pm in May this is very good value for money, i have no problem in recommending and will be returning myself in the near future.

Well worth a visit.

Very pleased to find on this visit all the major work involved in the re-landscaping on this course has finished. There are a few small areas of "touching up" in progress, most of the landscaped banking is now in play.
The course itself is in very good condition, with a good mix and layout of holes, a nice amount of grass on fairways, the greens holding shots and putting true at around what i would call a medium speed. The 1st cut of rough is as you would want it but the 2nd is best avoided if you can(i could'nt), very thick in places, lucky if you can find your ball nevermind play it.
We played a twilight for £15, starting at 2pm at the moment, which i believe is good value. I would be more than happy to play here again.
