DESCRIPTION:

The Laguna Golf Course, opened in 1990, is part of the Oceanico Group of Golf Clubs on the Vilamoura resort.

Designed by U.S. golf architect Joseph Lee and laid out on low lying coastal terrain, this course, with its many water hazards and few trees, is considerably different from the other ones at the resort and many of its holeshave an almost links like feel.

Some may recognisethe Par 72 course, whichmeasures over 6,100 meters off the back tees, as beingpart of the original 27-hole Vilamoura III course butLaguna is much more than a cut-down version of Villamoura III.

The courseincludes several lakes which act as hazards (coming into play on 11 of the 18 holes), water reservoirs and wildlife reserves forboth resident and migratory birds, plusnearly 80 bunkers to add challenge to the round. In addition the wind is often a factorin play on this lower lying ground, blowing in off thesea and demanding to be taken into account.

Laguna Golf Club shares a large, welcoming clubhouse with the neighbouring Millennium Course.

Visitors are always welcome. Contact club to make arrangements.

A Great Opener

Laguna and Millenium share the same excellent clubhouse, but Laguna is a much more interesting course. The superbly maintained greens are fast and the fairly open parkland gives you a great opportunity to get into the rhythm and speed of Algarve golf before moving onto some of the more challenging venues. Markers are 150 METRES from the FRONT at all courses so remember to think long! Practice facilities are extensive - driving range, chipping green, practice bunker and two putting greens. A bit pricy, (but all Algarve prices seem to have risen sharply since I was last there) with a round being in the order of €80, a buggy is €40 and a pull-trolley €5.

More French Car than Portuguese Golf Course

If you've ever looked at a Renault Laguna and thought wow then Vilamoura Laguna evokes the same sensations. Looks are great on the outside but would you really want to be seen inside!
Played the course in mid-September and it looked as though all the old BMC employees at Longbridge had tried their hand at green maintenance.
Now I know they like to get hundreds of us visitors through each day but some basic tidying of the green surrounds and tee areas would go a long way to making it look better.
It just felt flat and almost uninteresting (and was certainly the worst course of 4 we played) General feeling amongst 22 blokes over there on tour was that by comparison with the other courses this was one worth avoiding. Maybe it wasn't a "society" course but a surly starter certainly got us off on the wrong foot.
There are better courses out there but if you love the challenge of playing in a wind on a tricky course this could be for you - or try the new Vauxhall instead.
