Looking Good

The course was in very good condition considering the wet weather we have had earlier in the year. Fairways and greens very good and plenty of sand in the bunkers. Nothing to do with golf, but a great variety of wildlife - deer, rabbits, ducks, geese, squirrels was seen as well. A favourite course of mine and I regularly exceed expectations when I play here as I did on this occasion. Clubhouse food and drink could not be faulted.

Decent

Overall a pretty decent parkland course, I wouldn't pay the usual £35 but we had a voucher for £15. Probably a good £20, maybe £25 course. Not overly long and in reasonable condition. Would certainly return for another go as I was abysmal today.

Oh dear...

I've played most of the courses in Essex but Maylands Golf Club had escaped me for some reason.

So when I had a chance to play it on a Society Day... I also got a chance to play with the TSG boss, something we had not achieved together since our Sussex trip early in the summer.

A tad under 6000 yards Maylands is sandwiched between the A12 and the M25.

On arriving at Maylands I had a long chat with the pro who said the course was in very good condition. I hired a smelly petrol buggy for £25.

I suppose it best to describe it as parkland, though the noise of the traffic makes it better described as urban. The birds must wear ear defenders.

However, small herds of Muntjak deer roam the fairways, which is a really nice distraction from the course.

The Greens were woolly and hard, with no chance of stopping your approach shot. The tees were also in poor condition.

There is plenty of water at Mayland's, which does make some of the par three's a good challenge.

The clubhouse is very old and lacks decent lighting.

We marked our cards, by the light of our phones!

Do you remember the TV show 'Eating in the Dark'? well, Mayland's clubhouse is a great venue if the show should ever return!!

We paid £34.50 for 18 holes and Ham Egg and Chips, which is what I think I ate?!

Well established, solid test of skills

Easily located just a bit off the m25. Parking spaces seemed a bit limited (ground was a bit rough in the car park area).

Friendly Staff and locals.

Food was prompt and I enjoyed a light breakfast.

The course is a mature parkland, variety of holes is interesting.

A bit of a zig-zag navigating the course, well signed and a nice walking course.

A good mix of hazards is challenging.

Herds of deer occupy the course so take care (especially where you put your feet).

Worth a subsequent visit especially with negotiable discounts (blue light and ex-forces).

Worth the visit

Being my first game with TGS and being missing from golf for years it suited me fine, a forgiving course, fairways suffering a bit with many bare patches, overall I liked the course and would play there again.

Lovely little course

Firstly dont be confused by the "golf and country club". it aint that grand! clubhouse a littl dated but does the job of serving a drink and a sandwich
The course..... For January i thought it was i great nick. Not a long course which suited me and some tight interesting holes. having said all of that soon as i hit the m25 i couldnt remember a single hole! For 20 quid with a bacon roll and a cup of cofee you would do very well to find a better deal in the winter. Definitely go back again and i dont say that to often
very enjoyable day . Give it a try

Good value for money and an enjoyable round

This is certainly not Wentworth but for £12 you can't go wrong!

Staff in the club house were very friendly and welcoming.

The course was very enjoyable even though it was December and quite wet.

Lovely course glad I went along, barring diverts on course.

The course is very good and open fairways, bunkers could do with more sand in. The only thing I don t like about the course and other one,s is that people do not replace their diverts after iron shots.
Other than that very good course.

we paid £15 and well worth the money

Not a long course but lots of trees and some deep bunkers to contend with.
Didn't go in the club house as the green fee was already paid, practice areas were a tad frozen, so didn't use them either. Nice course to play, nice scenery too. Greens were rather frozen which messed up the putting a bit. So if Ed Mc has a game up to play there for £15 I'd play again, in fact I am next week and looking forward to it

Good course

Very nice woodland course with some really good holes, a couple of which are very tight off the tee. Wet and soggy when I played but will be playing this course again. Would be a great track in the summer.

Enjoyable course.

There was both good and bad about playing my first ever round at Maylands in December. The downsides appears to be how wet the course can be, and the noise from the M25 that follows you through your round. That said, I found that I tuned out the noise fairly quickly.

The greens were slower than a lot of courses I've played recently, although they looked very good and the ball ran very true. The fairways are fair and generally wide, with only one or two that could be described as tight. The 7th in particular is especially narrow if you have a driver in your hand.

I wouldn't describe the course as hilly, but it is very undulating.

Overall I enjoyed playing Maryland's (despite my score here). The course is very pleasant and there are some nice holes, and I wouldn't hesitate in going back for a return round.

Inter Club Match

Cannot comment on cost as this was a Club match, and I only used the practice putting green.
The first hole made sure that a provisional was played if the ball went in the rough..
Some holes were shorter in yardage, but beware, you have to think where you need to play the ball.
The par 3's are not as easy as you would think.
Par 4's play longer than the yardage.
And the par 5's can help your card (unless I was plying well)....
If the catering we experienced is normal then make sure you eat, although I'm not sure of cost...

Mature parkland course (never have temporary greens)

Mature parkland course. With undulating fairways, some tight holes with O/B’s, doglegs and undulating greens, fast & true, with some super 'driving' holes. Fairways, bunkers & greens were in good condition. Some holes & Tee’s crisscross. Practise putting green, large chipping area, driving nets & friendly staff. Some ball washers at the Tees. This is my sort of course I definitely be a member & recommend

Also Maylands never have temporary greens.

Hmmmm, not sure I'll be back....

Now given this course is only 3 miles from my front door I have no idea why I hadnt tried it before? However, despite it being a fairly pretty and well kept course, I didnt find it particulary memorable?! Some of the holes run along side the M25 and no amount of netting is going to drown this out (try fencing guys!) but that didnt put me off....I guess the place just didnt seem to have much of an atmosphere....in fact, whilst no one was unpleasant to us, I didnt feel I was made particulary welcome either and so wont be rushing back. At some stage private clubs will realise they are businesses too and they will not survive unless the treat visitors like customers rather than just tourists!!

Great course.

Maylands is a terrific mix of mature, very well laid out holes on a super piece of undulating countryside.
The condition of the course was very good considering the recent lack of rain, greens were quick and tricky but a very fair test of your putting skills. Fairways and first cut off rough were good and again will get even better with some rain. Minor gripe with a lack of depth of sand in one bunker i found myself visiting, although others were fine.
The clubhouse is homely and welcoming, staff were helpful, changing facilities are better than most, practise facilities whilst not fully used by me look to be comprehensive.
I look forward to playing here again.
