A Welcome Surprise

First time I've played here. Nice course and the green keepers are working on the course. Played a society day and we had to start on the 14th. Greens from the 14th to the 18th were slow and bobbly. Got to the 1st green and they totally changed to being relatively smooth and fast and that's how they all where to the 13th.
Have to think on this course, and choose your clubs wisely.
Would return again to play the course.

Very tight and narrow

Looked forward to playing this course and was not disappointed by the scenery and condition of the course as a whole.
Spoke with a female member prior to tee off and was told to keep the driver in the bag and to plot your way round for a lower score and less balls lost, what does one do? Uses the driver more then required thinking that the big shot is in the bag and that the course lends it's self to it as you stand on the tee's but oh no how wrong can one be and how deceptive is this course!!
Even when I did hit a good driver the dog legs and narrow fairways mean that you will lose sight of your ball to which I find most frustrating as hate loosing balls to a good shot!!
For a mid-high handicapper playing Theydon for the first time I wont lie, it was hard but perseverance prevailed and have to say that on reflection I needed to be straighter on the day but by being straighter and playing more like a Del Boy Trotter (plotter) you will enjoy it more and will reap the rewards as there is a good score to be had.
The facilities off the course like the pro shop and 19th hole was of high quality and looks superbly over the 18th hole basking in the sun so take advantage if playing here.
I failed to break 100 but did get a birdie with a chip in off the green so a mixed bag but now knowing what is required I will return hoping to do better next time, so watch out for the next scorecard. hopefully sub 100 maybe even 90 if have a good day.

Fantastic Course

This is a course, I will play again, You cant just turn up and blast the ball all over the course, it will eat your balls,,,
The back 9 I found really quirky, very tight and hedges in the middle a number of fairways. I wasnt sure if Red Rum or the Patrick McGoohan, the Prisoner with a Big Bouncy Beach ball was going to make an appearance really enjoyed the hours spent playing and the craic was good too.
Come and play and see for yourself.

Very quirky but unique

I really like Theydon Bois. The staff are very friendly and try there best to help. It’s not the cheapest but the food is good and the course is always in good order.
Buggies are £25, but they were needed on this exceptionally hot day.
We did not use the practice facilities other than a few putts on the putting green.
If your a big hitter leave your driver at home. The majority of par fours and fives have either a huge dogleg of a hedge/ditch to make you lay up. Going for it over the very substantial trees usually leads to disaster.
I’ve said it’s quirky and that’s what it is, on the back nine you have some short holes with elevated greens that are very small. This course requires a lot of accuracy, the greens are not easy to read, but if you play conservatively you can score well.
Like a lot of courses of this nature, to beat this course you’ll need to have played it regularly.
Theydon Bois is a real treasure, over a hundred years old and still a challenge. Unfortunately the weather was just to hot on the day we played it, which was a shame but I still thoroughly enjoyed it!????

Happy to play again

Very warm welcome during these times although bar orders currently being taken at the door.
Very tight course with an abundance of dog leg lefts.
This is a plotters rather than a hitters course and the greens are very tricky with lots of awkward gentle slope.
Worth a visit in picturesque surroundings

Nice Parkland style Course

An enjoyable parkland style golf course. Lots of Woods/Irons required off teebox for position on fairway. An all round decent test of golfing skill.
Greens were slightly wet because of recent rain. Compared to other courses I've played I'd have to give them 6/10.
The Burstead Golf Club for me is my benchmark 10/10 Greens, absolutely Superb.

Loved it!!

Just when you think you've played every kind of golf course, along comes one that surprises you....this course is like no other I've played!

If you like to smack a driver 300+ yards when you play or if you have a power fade, this is not the course for you but if you like 'thinking' your way round, have a good short game - you'll love it.

Nestled on the edge of the famous Epping Forest, this course winds its way through parkland with narrow fairways and small greens but note, 70% off the holes favour the 'draw'. Alas, something I don't possess.

At only just over 5000 yards, leave the driver at home and enjoy laying up and flying in the flop shots.

Otherwise, friendly staff, a big veranda that overlooks the 18th and a small but well-stocked Pro shop makes for a good golfing experience.

I'll definitely be back....but without the Driver!

You got too hit fairways (but isn’t that part of the game?)

Mature tree line sort parkland course cut in Epping Forest with some undulating fairways with firm & true greens with green side bunkers an easy walk. Every hole is individual.
Rewarding course, not just a “grip & rip driver”.
I went round only using a 5 wood & irons off the tees.
Your course management will have to be at its best as there are plenty of doglegs more left then right with tight fairways.
No water hazards but some holes have lateral ditches & hedges. Bunkers OK. Some tee boxes were a bit poor.
Overall the courser was in excellent condition.
Excellent club house & pro shop with friendly staff.
Practise putting green, driving nets, ball cleaner on every tee box.
Definitely worth playing, but you got too hit fairways (but isn’t that part of the game?)
I will be coming back.

Testing fairways, very well maintained.

It's a long time since I played Theydon. Better than before. The course is in really good condition. Very competitively price for green fees, with a loyalty card scheme that means even more golf for your money. Had a long conversation with the Pro, now Director of Golf, about a taster membership which looks very attractive. Would save having to travel so far to play around Herts and Essex (cost of fuel and all that!) Seriously, a nifty short course, not too taxing for the old legs, and the electric trolley helps.

The clubhouse would benefit from good food being available before and after 18 holes. A more varied menu would help to make the taster membership more appealing if I were to make Theydon my home course.

All said and done, I will be back, much sooner than later through the Autumn months.

Normal service resumed at Theydon Bois

A much warmer welcome than last time. Pro gave us all the information we needed and we were able to tee-off early. Course very quiet which made for a speedy and pleasant round. Fairways were in very good nick and lots of work had been done to remove a number of untidy areas around the course. Greens extremely firm and will not hold so game needed to be adjusted to cater.

Friendly welcome from young lad behind the bar on return to the clubhouse capped a fine afternoon.

Trees and more trees

Tight course where your iron play needs to be straight and up to scratch - mine wasn't and consequently spent most of my time in the trees. I will go back again on a value deal, but full visitor price is a bit high. Course really let down by the most unfriendly welcome by the club pro that I have so far received in Essex.

"Playing golf in a Botanical Garden"..........

These were the words of our very observant team player Dave A. and I could not agree more, heaven of a golf course.

Theydon Bois started as a 9 hole course back in 1897, set in the Epping Forest & designed by James Baird. A further 9 holes (FW Hawtree's design) were added in 1971 providing this now very well established course with the most diverse & elegant trees, bushes, vegetation, lots of dog legs, some very attractive Par 3s & short Par 4s, Ladies Tees set behind the Men's Tees on 7 holes.

No a long course but accuracy is needed to negotiate the narrow & sloping fairways, hollows, bumps, small brooks, ondulating greens, nicely shaped bunkers with decent amount of sand. Not a flat course, a good amount of walking, I could hear some puffing/panting in our Team, I am sure we were all much fitter after the game.

A very well maintained course, way finding is excellent, the layout is constantly flowing, even when crossing 2 roads (1 is a busy one !!!). Beauty is everywhere, views of Theydon, the Epping Forest: a heaven of a golf course.

My favourite holes:

The 3rd (Theydon View),Par 3, a raised Tee box looking down on a fairly large green sloping towards the back & guarded by 4 large well placed bunkers. Lovely views of Theydon from Tees.

The 12th (Zareba Jumps), a short Par 4, green being guarded by beautifully shaped edges & an arch. Will post a photo.

Fairly large car park, well laid out.

Proshop: tucked away round the back. Ok welcome, could have been friendlier, you get given an access code for the Clubhouse & changing rooms. I was given the wrong one !!!! Varied golfing stock, a few Ladies tops..

A practice net & small putting green near the 18th green/ 1st Tee.

Ladies changing rooms upstairs, well equipped, lots of different rooms. Some WC downstairs as well.

Clubhouse is pleasant, but not a modern look. Food/drink available @ reasonable prices. Friendly service. The highlight is the newly build outdoor terrace overlooking the 18th green, the area is raised and on decking, with glass balcony and nice modern garden furniture, We could not sit outside as it was a very blustery day and sometimes wet.

Theydon Bois is not far from the M25 J26, easy to find.

Today, the game was organised by John A. who got us a fantastic deal of £15 a round, I would have paid more for such a quality course. A well attended game, 3 teams decided by throwing balls in the air. The weather was blustery, with heavy showers mixed with sun, hail as well, but we did not get too wet.

I heard Theydon Bois used to be a very strict, "old fashion sort of golf club" but rules have been relaxed & now more in keeping with the 21st century golfers !!!attracting a good Junior section. The Seniors & Ladies are well attended as the course is not too long but still offers all kind of golf challenges.

I would recommend this course & certainly return even if I have to drive 100 miles round trip....

THE END.....

Golf in The Forest

Like most of the country, this course suffered heavily throughout the past winter. Thankfully and with the arrival of spring, things are looking up for golfers and Golf Clubs - nowhere more so than at Theydon Bois Golf Club.

I had not played here for a long time, but will be returning soon. Much work has been carried out to clear some trees, bushes and undergrowth from the forested areas, apparently to promote air-flow across fairways, which should help dry previously boggy areas. It also means those errant balls can be more easily found and play is speeded up.

Not a long course, but a variety of dogleg holes around trees, well placed bunkers and the undulating terrain give a good course management challenge. I only used my driver 4 times, with an iron often being the best choice from the tee. Straying off the fairways could leave you with the choice of a sideways knock-out or, if feeling brave, a 'Seve-esque' recovery ..... but that didn't work for me today!

Greens were about the best I've played on this year, possibly due to recent investment in a new green 'iron'. Much tlc has been given and several GUR areas are evidence of the ongoing maintenance plan. Some great views, most noteably from the short downhill 3rd hole, but the course itself presents an attractive picture.

A newly-built veranda overlooking the 18th green will be popular on a sunny day with visitors and members, who all seemed friendly.

Overall, a very good experience and thoroughly recommended!

Will go again

Yet another course in Epping Forest - how do they fit trees in as well? That said it is a relatively short but quite tight course. Unfortunately this year, being the almost total washout that we have endured, has not helped the course at all. There are a lot of boggy areas, but there is a lot that is just quite damp. With 4 par 3's and just the one par 5, there is nothing that really stands out, BUT, that does not mean it is a boring course. There are plenty of ditches, trees and bunkers to beware of. Long hitters will probably not need a driver more than once, but us lesser mortals are able to use it often. As with most courses at this time of the year, the trees shedding their leaves can cause a little frustration, but keep away from the leaves (and trees) and your game will be enjoyable. If you go around now, the 15th is not badly sanded, it's just covered in fine needles. I'd have to say it is a typical members club, so leave your mobile phone off in the clubhouse, and be aware the membership 'own' the course! Look forward to playing here when the never ending 'drought of 2012' finishes...

Nice little surprise - Mature Parkland

On a day suited to Golf (i.e. no wind or rain or other inclement weather) this was a good day out. It was easy to drive past the club down the country lanes (more of which later). Not overly long but a test of golfing skill and the ability to think your way around a course. Longer hitters would probably not make much use of a driver, but this course sets up well for average hitter of around 200 yards, and if you can keep it on the fairway much of the trouble is avoided. Tree-lined and well establised some elevation changes make club selection interesting.

Loved the views and it is a pretty little course, although surrounded by roads and connurbations.
Caution there is a need to cross a busy country road at least twice during your round... take care...

Car parking - safe enough, keylock entry into clubhouse, small Pro shop had enough to stimulate a little interest.

Staff were welcoming and helpful, locals were friendly enough as well.

Course was soggy in places, greens were by and large fair (but tricky if you were on the wrong level). Some tee boxes showed signs of wear but were generally OK, we played off 1 temp tee and 1 temp green (it had rained recently in the area). Looked as though pitch and divot marks had been addressed by the time I arrived at each green. Sand in the bunkers was coarse but yet playable so no scares there.

After round cuisine was ad hoc, a la carte and of good quality with friendly service.

It would be nice to come back and play again in the summer, but I suspect that it would present a different challenge..

Very nice course

Theydon Bois is a very pretty course . Many of the holes are very well designed with narrow and challenging fairways . It is not a very long course , so it is more about accuracy than distance . The course was very well manicured on the the day we played . It had very well defined levels of rough and it looked immaculate . Hope to play again soon .

Well worth a visit

Not a long course and easy to walk, You must be able to do straight drives as it's quite narrow in parts and the trees get in the way a lot.Started of with a par and thought great here we go, then disaster on the second hole par 4, it sounded like Woody Woopecker I think I hit evey tree on that hole and scored a shocking 9. The third par 3 was a great elevated tee area looking down to the flag 136 yards managed to get a 4. The 6th I had Woody Woopecker again had a nightmare with an 8, Back nine played well and all in all had a great time, would like to play again especially in the summer

Nice course

A short (5261 yards - Yellows) course that has mature trees lining the fairways.

This is not a course for a driver off each tee, pick your place on the fairway and take whatever club gets you there.

Nice, small pro shop with friendly staff.

Good clubhouse with a nice veranda overlooking the par 3 18th hole.

A hilly course with some good doglegs to negotiate.

Well worth a visit in the summer months.
