Midweek bargain

Nice flat course with quite a few dog legs and water. Very wet in a few places (it had been raining the past few days) but greens in surprisingly good condition. Well kept in general and for £14 midweek an absolute bargain. Didn't use clubhouse but staff seemed friendly when paying. Will definitely be playing this one again.

Excellent Value

Plaied there a few weeks ago. Cost £14 each. Tee time was 10:30. Facilities were quite minimal. Found the course in good condition, bunkers mostly raked. Greens had a nice speed but had a number of pitch marks. Pace of play in front slowed on a couple of occasions but was good over the round.
To sum up. Great value for money

Needing some TLC

Played twice in a week and was hoping the greens got a bit quicker, but was wrong - BUT, there is a reason - they are making sure the greens stand up to traffic. It is just a little annoying as most places are now running faster. That said, they are in very good condition generally as they are hard enough to a) let your ball run through if it lands on them and b) are good enough to 'repel' the dreaded craters we call pitch marks! 'Old holes' need repairing with more than sand as it takes too long to heal.
Bunkers are in need of care from the ground staff, members and players as they are not being raked (if there is a rake in it). Fairways are fairly divot free, but tee boxes need tidying up.
Good to see they are ensuring a hard path round the course; I'd assume that this will allow buggies all year (many better clubs could learn this lesson), but can they please fill in all the holes - noticed one and stumbled, then getting back in the buggy stumbled in it again.

But, for the price, the course is good value, and I would think that the course will get the TLC as more income comes in. Hope so, as Crown who were in charge before did their usual sucking of cash from the business then cast it off for someone else to pick up the pieces - hope it works for the folk now running it.

Good challenge, value for money, recommend

We needed a course that was equal distance between us and that we could book early weekend tee times. One of my friends found Stapleford Abbotts. Having played the course now a number of times this year, we have found it a good challenge, plenty of water hazards, a number of dog-leg holes that once you get to know the layout become more enjoyable and holes you have to think about. Greens have seemed fairly-hard all year, good to putt on be not easy to pitch and hold to.
I believe the course was previously owned by Crown Operations Golf Ltd, but since 2019 it has been under new ownership Phil & Rita Newman and their family, members have told me improvements have been made to not only the course but the clubhouse and catering. I can vouch for this, we normally tee-off early and back in around 12:30 and we look forward to the coffee and bacon or sausage baguettes.
I have enjoyed the games I’ve played here this year and with their Loyalty Card (pay for 5 rounds, 6th round free), excellent value for money.
Would recommend playing.

A Good Golfing Experience

A pleasant, open parkland course with a few lakes and quite a few water hazards. Good for Beginners and High Handicappers. Greens were reasonable but a few were a bit "fluffy". Pretty flat all the way around. Not too demanding! Good value.

A Very pleasant Parkland Course with plenty of trees lakes and ponds.

Stapleford Abbotts golf course is a good value for money parklands golf course well established with mature trees and hedge lines bordering most of the fairways and with plenty of lakes and ponds many of which are concealed to collect your ball if you don’t keep it on the fairway. Course was in pretty good condition apart from the fact that we felt the greens had not been cut that morning and were rather slow and fluffy. We all enjoyed the round and will be back again soon. Various prices for green fees seem to be on different forums which I think are very out of date. We all paid £20 for 18 holes on the Abbotts. Tee time around 10.30am. 16th June 2020. Bottled beers and soft drinks available from clubhouse through a window for players to drink outside on socially distanced chairs of course!!

Wrong Stableford Abbott’s ?

I joined a game with Paul, Ian and Roger. We had thought it was the Abbotts course well Ian and I did. It made us slightly late but anyway we played the Priory course which has some interesting holes. The club pro was very helpful once our mistake had been spotted, we were chaperoned to the Priory course by the senior captain Fred a lovely chap.
The Priory course is not too difficult, but the greens are a horror story, either infected or dug up by rabbits. Some were very hard also. The company was great but until the greens improve it’s somewhere I would not return even for £21, the buggy was a further £18. Some of the tees were pretty ropey also.
Hopefully I’ll get to play the Abbotts one day?

Enjoyable course....

Stapleford Abbotts GC is a pay and pay style proprietary parkland golf course near Romford Essex.

There are two 18 hole courses, ie the Abbotts and the Priors, plus a 9 hole par 3 course. The course was designed by Howard Swan and opened in about 1988. Since about 2004 the course has been a part of the Crown Golf Group.

I played the Abbotts course with fellow Epping Bandits members. The Abbotts course is a very easy walk. The course is well set out with challenging tee shots, requiring negotiation of doglegs, ditches, ponds etc. The greens were large, undulating, were in good condition and most surrounded by deep bunkers.

Played in October as the rainy season commenced it was evident that the course is not the best draining and consequently the fairways were not being cut affecting the run of the ball. However, the course was perfectly playable. I enjoyed the course very much. Next time I hope to play it in its best shape in the summertime.

A green fee of just under £20 was good vfm.

The catering service was excellent. Good golf fare, ie a pre-match breakfast and post match meal were good quality and vfm.

Priors Course Review - Course Shortened At Moment

Review relates to Priors Course not the members Abbotts course. There is no clubhouse, no practice facilities. There is a toilet in a portacabin. It is the course played along the M25, the other side of the mountain of mud and rubble being deposited by the lorries.

The course is carded at 5425 yards (yellow), but many of the holes have been dramatically shortened . . hence my 43 stapleford points! So I did not include the round for handicap. Some of the par 5s were now shortened to a short par 4 . . so short just a drive and a gap wedge. Course must now be playing well under 5000 yards . .

Not the owners fault, but the course has suffered from local thugs/gypsies? riding/racing their horses around the course. Piles of horse excrement on the fairways and hoof prints over many of the greens on the front 9. To be fair to the groundstaff, they have done an excellent job filling in and repairing the greens.

Come back in a year, and it should be better when it has been seeded and new tees laid, but at the moment, there are better value for money courses around e.g. Hainault and Epping or splash out a bit more and play the members Abbotts course.

Short, OK course, not well maintained

Tee boxes and fairways were OK, greens covered in pitch marks and look as if they shouldn't run as well as they actually do. I wouldn't fancy their chances when the weather's not as fair as it has been recently.

They've kept the par at 70 by making 4 holes par 5's when they could be 4's (reflected in an SSS of 66) - one was 382 yards today.

Nice enough layout, the hut substituting for a clubhouse is a minor negative, the lack of any practice facilities (not even a net or putting green) make this a struggle to get enthusiastic about playing again.

Decent but nothing special

We played the Priors Course. My rating for the clubhouse is based on the welcome and the good breakfast at the Abbotts course before heading 700 yards down the road to the Priors. Didn't see any practice facilities so gave that a 3. The Priors is a decent course. It is not very challenging and the par 5's are the length of par 4's at most other courses. The condition of the course is not bad. The greens were OK but very slow with a bobble or a rabbit hole here and there. All in all it is a course for you to cut your golfing teeth on.

Fairways very poor

First off, I really enjoyed the layout of this course and 16 out of the 18 holes. It was very quiet and we were the only ones in the bar (which may say something in itself) so to comment on the clubhouse, which is lovely, and hospitality may not be fair, although the staff that were there were not particularly interested. What I can say is that the fairways, around all of the greens and some of the actual greens themselves are in very poor condition, in desperate need of repair. This course is a very expensive twilight option and therefore based upon the quality of the course represents poor value for money - which is a shame. Massive potential at this club, which I suspect is struggling, with a fair amount of work ahead. I hope they do improve - let's see what happens, but compared to other alternatives within 5-10 miles I will not be back too soon but will be back at some time to see what's happened at the course, fingers crossed!

Expensive and noisy

Played the Abbotts. Course overall was in pretty good nick, but the greens were very bumpy and the majority of bunkers were riddled with stones. Lower end of the course runs alongside the M25; is noisy and can be a bit off-putting. They have put the prices up and it is not worth £34 a round - I hold a County Card and paid £23. Bar was unoccupied and the service, when it arrived, was unfriendly.

Please can you get some more strokesavers?

With so many doglegs on the front 9, a yardage chart would have been really handy for the first-time visitor; unfortunately they didn't have any. Also the greens had just been tined on the front, which made putting a bit of a lottery. The back 9 was Ok and you could even hit a driver occasionally. Having had this course bigged up by a member just a few days before, I have to say I was very disappointed, but then when you play as abysmally as I did, you have to find some excuse for it.

Its a nice short ish course, no long par 5's and just a couple of longish par 4's. A fair amount of water hazzards. If you play poorly, the course will bite a bit, but if you stay anywhere near the fairways, you will still have a second shot to the green.

A good day out at the Priors

OK here's the summary, good value for money, course was in good condition, sunshine was evident. This was a good shortish course, nonetheless challenging - but with plenty of opportunities to achieve good scores on just about all holes... Luckily I was hosted by some regulars - otherwise I might have gotten a little bit lost... Greens were good, fairways were fine... even the semi-rough was helpful... Nice parkland course, loads of trees and a swirling wind to make one think...

I enjoyed the round... 18th is a tight green across the water... I guess you could have nightmares about it, but just have a go and see where you end up...

Clubhouse facilities were limited but functional, on the day parking was a bit tight, so car share is recommended...

Good course, something for everyone, I will go again...

Stapleford Abbotts: Abbotts Course

We played after a week of heavy rain and the course was in remarkably good condition, with greens looking exactly that and running true. About half a mile past the clubhouse is The Priors Course. This inland links course is wonderful on a summer's day but if its windy, and your a high handicapper, you'll hate playing golf by the 14th!! A lovely course and equally challenging!!
