lovely setting

as you enter the course you are struck by the tranquility of the place. The course itself is a typical parkland with the wide open fairways flanked by established trees both sides, greens are well protected by well placed quite daunting bunkers but the real test is the greens even on a wet winters morning and them being hollow tined they were lightning fast, far too easy to roll one 7 or 8 ft past.If I was to be critical you could call it a little bit samey and the members were reluctantly polite but overall if you get a chance to play here grab it.

Superfast Greens

First visit to this course. Nice wide fairways so the driver got well used. The courses main defence are it's numerous bunkers and fast greens, apparently over 11 on the stimp thingy. Not a club I would ever want to join though. On a couple of occasions we walked past members in the clubhouse and they said good morning but then look directly down to see whether you are wearing the correct shoes. Not my sort of people thanks. Still, all in all a good day out and worth a visit.

Fantastic

Ok so the green fee is a bit steep but this is the best course in Essex, no question.
The whole place is fantastic with a very nice course set amongst very mature woodlands.
Found the members very friendly and if I could afford to this is where I would chose to play golf regularly. It's a tough test and the greens are incredibly fast.
If you can you should, at least once.

Classy backdrop to attractive parkland layout

Not a good start as turned up in shorts which, apparently, are not allowed in the clubhouse after 10. However, the catering staff were very welcoming. Teed off at 10 and the quality of the course made up for the dull day. Quite challenging, though, and you have to plot your way around. Playing as a fourball, we let a few smaller groups through, but were still harrassed a bit by the final group behind which was disappointing. Spoiled the superb view of Thorndon Hall going up the 18th.
