Surprisingly, a very nice experience!

Really enjoyed visiting Top Meadow, unfortunately it was a freezing cold day with a wicked Eastly wind. The club house car park is shared other facilities, getting a parking place can be a chore. The staff from the club shop, too the catering staff are friendly and very helpful. The club was very busy on the day, with a massive society going out before our society of 14 players. But that did not slow us, however there were members jumping in on certain holes that irritated some. Having no course guide made things a bit tricky as there are many blind holes, none of us had played the course before in my group. The course is Parkland with some challenging holes. You start on an elevated tee, hitting onto a par 3 green, very easy to run through. The fairways were on great condition, but the greens... although they looked nice were long and very very slow. But considering our winter, the course was in terrific condition. I would love to return and play the course on a bright warm day. I was wearing five layers and was still cold! We had a breakfast and Ham Egg and chips on our return. With 18 holes we were charged an amazing £30!!! That is cheap golf. The buggy which was petrol was £22. Give Top Meadow a go, it is a great test of golf and will not break the bank, but choose a warm day! Good luck getting a parking space, though they do open a field for extra parking on very busy days.

Good value

Excellent value for money. Considering the time of year, the course was in pretty good nick. My first outing with the TGS lads and thoroughly enjoyed their company.

Tucked away in the Essex countryside

Mature tree line parkland course with undulating fairways some with small climbs. Some fairways had lateral ditches & ponds. Therefore course management comes into play. Most of the Fairways were in good condition. Sadly the greens were very slow. Bunkers some were good some poor.
Did not see any practise facilities. Club house & pro shop had friendly staff.
At £17.50 with an English breakfast its great value for money. Overall worth a visit

Excellent value for money.

A great little course tucked in the Essex countryside. It was established in 1985, so doesn't have the history of other clubs. It is attached to a hotel, so good restaurant facilities. Good mixture of holes, and good views over Essex countryside. Like nearby Mardyke, this is a course which doesn't seem to get busy. Greens, fairways and bunkers all in great condition, and plays well in Winter as well. At £16 including a full English breakfast it represents great value for money

Luv it

The fairways are quite open but when you get to the greens it does tighten up. The greens still need a bit of work but by July should be fine. Staff are friendly. It has a driving range plus a practice area for chipping and putting and if you play twilight, value for money is excellent.

Top Meadow - At £16 with Full English, It's Hard To Complain

A Course that's great value for money at £16 with a Full English Breakfast, I have a couple of gripes about the course, though. Although the course is well laid out at nearly 6000 yards, the fairways are not in top nick with lots of bare patches and unevenly cut. Also, several holes with G.U.R. which spoilt the run ups to the greens from the fairways. The major issue was the Greens; they were all full of disease and very uneven, a smooth putt was never going to happen on these. Hopefully they will sort these issues out soon as the course itself is ok.

Challenging especially when windy

Real value for money. The course is challenging, especially when it's windy. Need to have a good head for distances as on a lot of holes you need to put the ball in the right place or your in trouble. Only thing that lets it down are the condition of a lot of the greens, bit patchy and ball bobbles around. This could be as a result of the recent weather and greenkeepers haven't had a chance to repair damage.

Good value and challenging

I played here recently and quite a number of times 9 years ago (when I was a better player) and as always found it to be a challenging and interesting course. As mentioned by previous reviews, it helps to know the yardages on certain holes eg 2nd,7th,10th,15th. Some holes seem to play longer than their yardage eg the 18th, probably because of the prevailing West wind and being slightly uphill(I would suggest a club and half stronger in these circumstances) The 18th is slightly easier than it was 9 years ago as they have trimmed the trees on the left side so you can see most of the green from the tee now, the main obstacles being the large oak tree on the right and the pond in front of the green. The par 5 10th and the par 4 15th are formidable holes requiring thought and nerve. I still can't believe that I actually birdied the 10th 9 years ago! However that was a 'one off' and 6 to 9 is my usual score on this hole.
The course condition was fairly good, greens a little woolly in parts; some holes were cut on a slight mound making it difficult to gently roll a putt in. Wind plays a part on this course which is mainly flat with some sloping fairways. Some years ago the course was only 9 holes with the extra 9 being added later which explains the unsymmetrical layout, which in turn requires a bit of walking between certain holes.
Good value at £16 plus a breakfast (weekdays) Would recommend a visit.

certainly worth the price of admission

especially when it comes with a free fry up for £16, it has been very wet lately as we all know so the greens were a bit ropey, (and i'm sticking to that one with the way I chipped and putted on them ! ), On a nice sunny day there is much to enjoy at Top Meadow for the price. I have always found the staff very friendly and accommodating, esp with regard to my son who has severe autism. So come and enjoy

Mmm

Greens are some of the worst I have ever played on, some long walks between holes which I think they could easily improve by switching hole numbers, some holes are tricky, the £16 price tag including breakfast isn't a bad price but does refect the standard of course, so I would rather pay another 10er to play on better greens!

Good value, OK course

Not a bad day out all in all. £16 including breakfast is well worth it. Not overly difficult, and (probably) quite pretty.... unfortunately played in the 'fog of 2012'!! Will be back if schedules permit.

Good friendly people who run it!

Nice welcome and good breakfast! Pleasant course which does play better in the summer. Lots of work being done to the course, mainly new grass on some of the tees. I'm sure that the greens will improve with the weather.

Top Meadow sparkles in the sunshine

Well presented, this is a well worth the visit, whilst there were a number of temp tees it did not detract from the playability. Sunshine and light breezes combined to make this a good day out, once the fog had lifted, the panoramic views were revealed. Pretty course - trees in blossom - nice mix of challenges and something for every level.

Good scores are possible, but take care as the course can bite back. Well kept fairways, and greens were slick and fair enough. A nice walking course, well worth a second visit, and clubhouse facilities are well regarded...

Worth a visit

The course is quite a good layout and a fair test of golf for all standards. There are some interesting holes,a course planner is a must, some yardages caught me out,7 and 15 are examples, you cant see the green from tee.
Fairways where reasonable considering the time of year, and the course looks well looked after.
The greens are another story not in very good condition at all. Also the big Oak tree on the left side of the 18th green needs badly cutting back, completely blocks out the green. For the price of £16 which inc.full breakfast G.V.F.M.but I wont rush back to play again because of the greens

Average course.

Top Meadow Golf Club is an ok course but great value for money. The club house/bar is very good and the food is also very good. The course itself is ok although the greens were very poor quality today. Some of the holes play a lot longer than the stated yardage as the course is quite open and exposed to the elements.
£16 for 18 holes plus breakfast is still good value for money and less than a tenner for twilight rate is brilliant.

Nice little course...a hidden gem.

Not long, but some very good golf holes, one particular par 5 ...happy to walk off with a bogey. Greens are OK to good, depending upon when they are cut, ...the day I played they were quite wooly, and not too true. Fairways very well kept though.
A hidden gem and certainly value for money - £16 includes a full English breakfast. I will definitely play it again.

Cheap and Cheerful........

Played here on a cold January day, so not so sure I saw the course in its best light. However, its a fairly benign 18 holes that plays up and down parallel fairways but there are a few good holes. However, at £16 on a Saturday(with a member) you cant really go wrong. Wont be rushing back but would play again!
