Come back in the summer

The course and club look quite special but let down by the following.
* greens were all winter greens on the decision that the greens were suffering from ice even though it was above zero all the way round and were ok in Jabuary
* had to play off mats and largely winter tees
* no reduction in price for the above reasons
I can understand clubs trying to protect their courses in winter but if they are going to charge the same price it leaves you wishing you'd paid a bit extra and gone elsewhere.

Pleasant course

Have played here a few times now. Helsby is a friendly club which is challenging, well maintaned, great greens and overall represents good value for money. That all said, if you are looking for the wow factor then this isn't a course I would recommend as it is a slightly dull parkland course which doesn't offer any views to take in along the way.

Course in good nick, great greens

Weather didn't help at times but overall a lovely looking course and despite the odd temporary green the course and greens were in great shape. Slight concern what it would cost to go back in summer but a good winter course. Clubhouse very friendly and food good value and served quickly.

Great winter golf

Its still my favourite course in Cheshire, no higher compliment than that. Its not cheap though and is somewhat exclusive. I was at the invite of a member and even then it would have cost me £40 if he hadn't paid for me. Its had a few minor alterations since my last visit many moons ago, mainly extra bunkers strategically placed. For November you couldn't fault the greens, very true and quick. Must be lightening in summer. Drains well due to sandstone too, very few wet patches. Clubhouse is a wonderful setting too, especially if you want to watch golfers coming in.

Cracking course

This is simply one of my favourites courses in Cheshire. It has everything - trees, slopes, valleys, water, not too many bunkers, excellent greens and a very attractively positioned clubhouse the members must be proud of.

That all said it had some standing water on some of the greens but this wasn't a hinderance.

A great test for all golfers. Hope to be back in the summer.

Do visit Vicars

Attractive parkland course with testing but true greens. Online booking of 4 ball great value at £17.50 on Saturday. Course condition excellent. Hazards to think about are trees and streams, bunkers fairly positioned and not too difficult. Temp greens in winter were good too.

Great course

This is a parkland course with no boring holes. No real water hazards and bunkers not too much of a problem but you do have to think about shot selection especially on the shorter doglegs. Tree lined but you will find most balls and probably find your way out. Couldn't fault greens, course was a little damp in places but no muddy areas after a week of some rain. Excellent value at 24 quid with golf society but expect to pay 30-40 normally.

Great golf on the cheap

Got a 4 ball for £60 offer which we were able to use on a Sunday. In early March with zero degree temp we had no temporary greens but some helpful winter tees. What wasn't helpful was the cold and gale like winds!! The greens were very true and quick for this time of year. If you want good links style golf on the cheap then Leasowe is a must. Fairways can be narrow, more forgiving to the slicers than the hookers (or more kindly.. faders and drawers). Its a regular jaunt, only wish they could guarantee good weather.

Much improved

Despite the recent wet and cold weather there were no winter greens here. They also played very very true. Super value at £18. On downside fairways were a little soft and cut up and winter mats for tees throughout. Its not a pretty course but what they have they are making the most of. I look forward to playing here in the summer after this.

Great course, let down by recent weather

Played as a guest on a £12.50 deal after North Manchester closed. Though half of holes were winter greens and most winter tees ALL 18 holes were playable and all had interest of some sort. This is a course you could play over and over again and not get bored. Would love to play it when the course is at its full length but dry.

Quirky course full of doglegs

..and almost all of them left to right.
It needs good club selection to find the corners, meaning not always the driver out at the tee. Greens were very slow and had appreciable moss on them. Plenty of bunkers to trap you and watch out for that river coming into play. 18th seems to be everyones favourite though the 19th gets my vote.

Great winter course

Play Frodsham quite a lot and it never plays winter greens due to the sandstone it sits on. A challenging but not difficult parkland course that has some lovely views of the Mersey estuary on the higher holes. Lovely clubhouse and always good value for money.
