Another course under threat!

This was a freebie round arranged through a friend. We were treated like royalty. Sausage sandwich for breakfast & a steak meal afterwards all as part of the day! The buggy was free as well? The members could not have been more friendly.
But the course, is under threat from the new bridge across the Thames. In I8 months Southern Valley may well have have disappeared.??
The layout of the course is great, with challenging par threes, well off the whites at least.
The tee boxes are awful and need levelling, but there is no investment into the course.
The fairways are also in bad need of irrigation and seeding. On a plus side the greens run true and are challenging, if a bit hard.
All in all I loved my experience at Southern Valley the people there are a bit special, but the course is a has been and I can’t see that improving which is very sad.??

Shame !

I play here three or four times a year , a very good winter course as excellent at draining.
After a practice at the nearby ( not attached ) driving range I used to call in for a bit of practice for 10 mins on their putting green . Last time sadly although the car park was almost empty due to gales and a spot of rain the assistant manager sent out a Marshall to me to tell me to leave the practice green ! What a welcome , shame on you asking a pensioner and experienced golfer to leave your deserted practice green !

couse not my cup of tea

Very much like a inland links course. Although December isnt the best time to write a review but the course drains very well.Greens ok bunkers are awful no sand in any of them.cost me at least 5 points. Clubhouse ok vey badic but it is a public course without sounding like a golf snob.At £30 i think it was very overpriced . wouldn't be tempted to go back even at 20 quid. Not a course where you remember and recommend it. So there you have it my take on southern valley golf club

Worth a visit

Not overly friendly but okay. Course in good condition played during the winter. Greens a bit patchy but again not bad for winter. Made good use of hybrids...

Not my favourite, but good winter course

Southern Valley is a course I am not very fond of. Its quite plain and featureless. However...it is a good winter course. It drains very well and when other are closed or boggy, Southern Valley will be fine. Inland Links so fairways undulate a lot, greens are fair and quick. Bunkers nice. Clubhouse is a disappointment - portacabins. It can have some good deals, so then its fair. Nice in winter, but it is boring really.

Links type course with great views of Thames estuary and Kent countryside

This is the 2nd time I played this course in two months and I like the fact that it is not very long from the Red tees, yesterday the fairways were very dry, the ball has a lot of run, specially so when the wind was with us, the greens were exceptionally good, some bunkers were in little need of sand but manageable. One of our Team kept finding those traps, well the ball had so much run. ONE par 4 was reached in one by the Organiser of the game, Malcolm S., that was a surprise to him as there were another team in front!!!!!!!

Some lovely Par 3s always well protected. The 9th, Par 4 has a very interesting shaped green with a sort of island in the middle, work was being carried out when we played. There are a few sloping fairways and one needs to chose the aim carefully as the ball may not end up where you wanted to...

The scenery is very attractive, just like a postcard: the dry fairways blended with the sand adding a very soft touch to the landscape with a few bushes and greenery. There is a sense of very open space where one can breath openly. The Kent countryside is beautiful too and there is a very nice view of the Thames Estuary.

Signage is very good to start with but at some points, the next tee signs are missing, so if you play for a first time, you might go to the wrong tee.

A warm welcome in the small Proshop, the bar staff is very friendly, you will find nice coffee and food reasonably prices so are the other beverages.

Nice decking seating area outside overlooking the 18th, always interesting to see how one reaches the green on their final approach.

Plenty of parking, a practice putting green by the 1st Tee, not sure where the nets or driving range were.

There always seem to be a good deal to be had and I would love to return to see how the course plays in the winter, I suspect it will be very windy but draining very well.

So if you have not played Southern Valley, give it a try and see if you like it. (my personal view is that I much prefer this course than Pedham Place, as too many blind shots and very wet in the Winter)

THE END.......

Windy...

Played here on the Kirstie Wilson Memorial Golf Day and thoroughly enjoyed the event....

Much credit goes to Gary who put on a fantastic day with a friendly bunch of golfers (and TSGers).

The course is open to the elements and subject to the strong winds blowing off the Thames Estuary but don't be put off, this course is great fun to play.

There's plenty to enjoy for the high and medium handicappers and whilst it's not Wentworth, it's well worth the trip.

All the staff were friendly and food tasty.

And of course, all in a very good cause - I would encourage ALL TSGers to support this day in the future!

Enjoyable course

Enjoyed playing Southern Valley yesterday.
Played on my own as partner pulled out last minute.
Course is well layed out, very open and bumpy fairways, plenty of bunkers in stratigic places. Open fairways so a little forgiving, greens were very quick but if your on line you should sink some putts.
A great looking par 3 on the back 9.
Clubhouse is well laid out and staff friendly
Overall I would say this course still has room for improvement as some bunkers are a bit ropey and a few more rakes needed. It is though a very enjoyable course to play and I will most definatley come back especially at the twighlight price.

well worth playing this course

not the easiest of courses for me to find, but once there it was worth it.
Nice clubhouse, nice bar overlooking the 18th (which is always a plus to my way of thinking) and food not overly expensive either.
didn't use any practice facilities so it gets a 3.
The course played very well indeed, it's on a chalk base, so despite the amount of waterlogged courses due to recent weather, the course played very well.
The greens were a bit fluffy in places, and most moaned about them on the day, but a good solid golf course, gives you opportunities if you hit good shots, and will bite you for a v poor one. This makes it very enjoyable to play.
Play here and you will not regret the green fee

INTERESTING BUT AVERAGE LINKS GOLF COURSE

It's hard to sum up this course. It has an interesting layout for a links with its ups and downs and fairly tight fairways but what lets it down is the quality of the greens and fairways. The greens are quite diseased and, therefore, hard to putt on with all the bumps and the fairways, very thinly covered in grass, so, when you come to take your mid-iron shots, the ball has laid up on hard ground, between the grass. The clubhouse is quite new and fresh and the food is of a good standard which makes me think that the bulk of their money has been spent here. Here's hoping they can plough it into the course in future. I would go again but only for a friendly game and not really worrying about the scores; once they get the course sorted this will be a nice little golf club to visit. Here's hoping !!

Much better than I was expecting

On approach, the clubhouse isn't much, but the welcome is a warm one and we were well looked after. I really enjoyed the course and thought the greens were fantastic - they beat me, so I need to go back and have another go. If you stay straight, you can get a good score.

Southern Valley Golf Club

I've played Southern Valley several times and for the price feel its a pretty good course, not over taxing physically as its quite flat, but can give you good chance to shoot a low score if you keep out of the rough. New clubhouse is good but would be nice to have a net to warm up your driver before playing.

what a difference!!

So finally the potato field is no longer, now that Irrigation and a new club house in place.
Used Green saver book got 2 of us for 20quid.
Fairways / bunkers in good condition greens were good
Challenging inland-Links course especially when windy Rough was rough but you could find your ball.
can imagine being in the clubhouse if you over hit to the 18th as the Green not overly big.
would go back again.

New club house will be great when finished (about 2 weeks)greens in very good condition and most a nice size. Very open and quite easy to play, fairways cut too short and very dry. Would play again no problem.

Nice course

This course plays very well in the winter, because of the chalk soil so it doesn't get wet. Greens are consistent, but very fast. In the sunmmer pitching short of the green is advisable as the ball runs forever here.

Not too difficult, but straight drives are essential.

Local links

I played southern valley on friday 26th and was quietly surprised.

Playing a 'linksy' course was different for me and quite enjoyable. The condition was not the greatest as it's quite a new course. The first cut around the green was quite bare in some places but the all year round pick and place was useful.

Good value for money at £16.50.

The clubhouse and facilities need help though. Portacabins for club bar and toilets, but saying that the people working in there were very helpful.
