Fantastic course with greens with a hint of Augusta

Horsley Lodge is a very well maintained parkland course set in the Derbyshire hills near Ripley, and is about 10-12 years old so some of the trees etc are still maturing, but very nicely. This course is in top condition. Some of the old stoneworks from a castle or stately home in the area has been incorporated into the layout as well adding nice features. It has some really wonderful holes and the greens are very fast, undulating, split level and very true, sort of gives you the feel of what the greens at Augusta might be like. There is a small hotel there as well which was very friendly, very nice rooms overlooking the 9th green. Well worth a stay and play, a hidden gem.

Woolly greens and weedy fairways but a well drained and therefore dry course

Echo some of the reviews earlier, the greens very woolly and therefore slow and untrue, especially near the pins, Fairways were weedy in many places. There are some interesting (nice) holes especially around the quarry, but let down by the poor state of the fairways and greens. This course would be so much better with a little more attention. HOWEVER, this course drains unbelievably well. We played immediately following a sustained period of wet weather around the country, floods etc, and this course was bone dry. It is built on chalk, hence the quarry. The bunkers were well filled and raked with no standing water either. Therefore despite the condition of the fairways and greens, was a pleasure to play without getting soaked from the feet up, with some great views over the surrey hills. Worth £15.

Nice course, shame about the bunkers

This is a nice course which is maturing well. It does suffer from drainage issues in the wet. However after a dry spell the fairways were in nice condition. The let down however were the bunkers, they were well positioned but had little to no sand. What was there was compacted, hardened and stony. There are some really nice eand testing holes and would like to play there again (when the bunkers are refilled)
