On the Up!

Having played here as Traditions in the past, it's a shame what has happened to this course. Luckily the new manager, Gary, was telling us about the upgrade they were going to undertake through the Winter to make improvements. Don't get me wrong, it's still perfectly playable and a nice round but with a bit of TLC it will be super for all handicaps and I would recommend it. Fairways were a little sparse in places but the greens were in great condition and a real challenge. Plenty of water to test you as well. Ideal for a society day and good clubhouse facilities. Definitely worth a visit.

An OK, potentially better, parkland course

Twisted Stone GC, (fka Traditions), is a parkland style course in Pyrford, Woking, Surrey.

The course was designed by Peter Alliss and opened in 1999. It is a proprietary pay and play course with a membership!

The course is a par 71, 4 par 3s, 11 par 4s and 3 par 5s. It is 5,912 yards off the Yellow tees, albeit that most of the Yellow tees in use were positioned closer to the White tees. A common practice by clubs during the winter months!

Played on a bright early December day, the ground conditions were generally very wet but were waterlogged in some places, eg the 1st, 5th, 16th and 17th fairways. The par 5 5th fairway was so waterlogged that a temporary forward tee was in place.

By contrast, the greens were in very good condition, though reading and judging lines and pace was difficult!

All of the par 3s are an enjoyable challenge!

There are a challenging array of carries, doglegs, bunkers and ditches (water filled) which needed to be negotiated on the par 4s/par 5s.

The index 1 par 4 4th hole whilst moderately long was a tight straight shot with a potentially problematic carry in heavy air conditions. However, the two most challenging tee shots were the parallel 9th and 18th holes where both tee shots involved a carry over a water fill ditch with vertical wooden railway sleepers reinforcing a high bank leading up to a change of level. No problem for long hitters but trouble for me in cooler winter conditions.

For the fun of it I chose to take on both carries. In both cases I didn't make the carries, but instead was fortunate that both balls clattered into the sleepers and rebounded back into play. Leaving long approach shots but without penalty. In competition mode I would probably have played safe by laying up short of the ditch or in the case of the 18th hole playing wide left towards the 1st fairway. However, I think both carries would be makeable in warm summer conditions!

The downside of this course is that playing patronage appears to be low and possibly course maintenance standards are lower as a consequence of lower resources! There was no pro-shop open and catering seemed very limited! The barman/administrator was on his first day and was uncertain about green fee rates!

A couple of members I spoke to advised that their drainage pump filtration system had been upgraded and the drainage of flooded areas in future would be cleared more effectively.

The course is only a 35 minute drive from home down the A3 but I had never made the effort to play it before. Despite my current reservations about it I think it would be an interesting challenge during the summer!

"Traditions GC" no more but TWISTED STONE to resurrect.

A lovely parkland/woodland course that Crown Golf did not maintain properly, did not invest money during their lease. The course is now back in the hands of its original owner (who also owns Pyrford) and he is going to restore TWISTED STONE to its former glory. Very similar story to Cottesmore, near Gatwick.

The course is a little gem near Woking, Surrey, but the neglect over the last few years is very apparent: tees boxes, fairways, greens and bunkers need to be resurrected. One can still enjoy a game if one is not scared of losing a few golf balls, between us 3 we lost about 2 dozens I think....

A Peter Allis designed course (opened in 1999) so expect a well designed course with a strong challenge. Every hole will get you plotting your way, lots of water, ditches, long carry over "wild areas" which must be avoid for obvious reasons, Some narrow holes borders by beautiful trees, at one point one get a glimpse of the Basingstoke canal & Marina, so not surprised to find so much water on the course. No hole resemble another, water comes into play on 13 holes I think, there are purposed built mounts in places, lots of diverse trees and wildlife in the woodlands.

A few favourite holes:

6th, short Par 3, water on the left to a slightly raised green with a deceiving/protruding arm of the adjoining stream, which cannot be seen from the Tee box.

8th, Par 4, slightly dog led left, sloping downhill with another sort of hidden stream before the green which is raised.

18th, sort Par 4, very technical. Lovely finishing hole: tee over a large pond, a huge wooden bank in the distance, preceded by a stream to an upper level for the fairway to the green guarded by a large bunker on the right and at the back a massive pond with a fountain which also comes into play on the 10th.

We had an early Tee time on a sunny Sunday morning, we were offered a reduction on the normal green fees, understandable in view the conditions & Norin F. using her European negotiation skills, maybe she could be an advisor to Mrs May/Mr Barnier....
The course was quite wet underfoot, making shots from the rough very tricky if you found your ball.

Warm and friendly reception in Proshop and Clubhouse alike.. Twisted Stone is starting to rebuild its membership and slowly visitors will return to this lovely challenging course. One can order a delicious and very reasonable sausage or bacon and egg bap from the 8th hole for collection on the way to the 10th (and a toilet stop, no ECO LOO on this course but lots of trees though.....)

I remember playing this course when I was quite new to TSG. David S. has organised a winter game and I remember finishing in the nearly dark with snow starting to fall and our feet and fingers started to freeze.........

For information:
Pyrford GC, sort of next door, is still under Crown golf but will eventually return to its owner.

THE END....

Not at its best

It's been a number of years since I've played here, and in that time it looks like the course has only gone downhill. To be fair, the weather conditions didn't help, with the rain making both greens and fairways very soft, but the greens were in need of some TLC and the bunkers looked like they hadn't seen a rake in 2015.

The guy in the pro shop had told us that the course was under new management and that the course negligence of the previous company (Crown Golf?) would be dealt with soon. Hopefully that will be the case as there are a lot of good holes here, especially the four pretty par 3's.

Nice course, shame about the bunkers

This is a nice course which is maturing well. It does suffer from drainage issues in the wet. However after a dry spell the fairways were in nice condition. The let down however were the bunkers, they were well positioned but had little to no sand. What was there was compacted, hardened and stony. There are some really nice eand testing holes and would like to play there again (when the bunkers are refilled)

Traditions

Was still abit boggy in places (all the snow has melted) and bunkers need some TLC but enjoyed the round. New cook has made a difference.

Long well layed out course

Surprisingly quiet for a Friday (it is half term).
Course seems in good condition, a bit boggy in places due to recent melted snow. Greens quite good for this time of year.

Winter Golf at its best. Must be mad to play in 0 degree C Temp.

Winter Golf golf at its best in 0 degree C. temperature. Must be mad to play but clear blue skies & crisp air, empty course, rosie cheeks. What fun for a Saturday afternoon.

TRADITIONS is well designed (by Peter Allis) parkland in Surrey with lots of water hazards & sand traps, good combination of tight interesting holes with natural, procteted habitat & some forgiving fairways. Excellent & fast (due to frost), well guarded greens, well drained course despite being surrounded by water.

Friendly Pro shop and Clubhouse.

TRADITIONS is part of Crown Golf chain, so lots of interesting offers (2 for 1, use of associated courses in UK, France & Spain).

We did not manage to do all 18 holes before dark as we teed off late in the afternoon but it was worth being out there. Finished in the dark with snow starting to fall.

I played with the same ball all the way round!!!!!

Over priced

Some of the greens had been scarified and nobody told us. The first was in a shocking state. The course was very waterlogged on a lot of holes, despite there not having been much rain? Had heard they had made some drainage improvements here, but no evidence of that, yet they had increased the price. Won't be going back, which is a shame, as there are some interesting holes on here, especially like the par fives and strategically placed water on a number of holes makes for a good challenge.

TRADITIONS GC

A part of the Crown Group. A mix of nice holes and quite bland ones. The course does not drain well and was suffering today from a deluge yesterday. Greens in good nick. Bunkers poor.
