Beautiful countryside course

After a quirky start, lots of undulations making the greens hard to see, the course flattens out and is rather nice. Well looked after. A lot of ditches across fairways. Just don’t go in them and you’ll be fine. A second visit will make some of the holes easier to play. And it is well worth a return.

Interesting course

The first half of the course is quite hilly as a result of craters left from WWII bombing. I thought the fairways and greens were good, especially considering the heavy rain of the past few days. Mostly wide fairways, some of which cross each other. Some tees and greens are quite close. I liked the course and would happily return. Very good club house.

Hawkstone course is great

Can’t comment on the championship course but Hawkstone was is great condition - much better than most after the recent deluge. A little bit hilly but great tree lined fairways, bunkers with sand and consistent greens. Great clubhouse. I didn’t use the practice facilities but they looked fine.

Pretty course in good condition

Strange looking back: The course was in good condition (taking into account the recent downpours). Tree lined fairways; quite wide and mown as well as they could be. But no spectacular holes that spring to mind. Everything was good. Friendly staff, driving range on site (£4 for 55 balls).

Cheap and busy

Very slow, but only £13. Fairly flat, ok condition, and lots of trees. If you can hit the ball straight you can score well. You don’t need to be long.

Easy walking parkland course.

Most fairways are tree lined and a few dog-legs will keep you guessing where the greens are. Also some ditches that run across the fairways to catch you out. Probably score better after a couple of visits. The course was in great condition and has good practice facilities which will be improved when the driving range is reopened in 2024. Good pro shop and club house. I’ll happily play there again.

Great condition, easy walking

Renowned for its excellent greens, Eaton is an easy walking course in great nick today (1st June 2023). Practice facilities are exceptional with putting green, bunker/chipping area and 200m range.

Really good course

The course was in great condition. Sand in bunkers, great greens, tees and fairways. We played the Nicklaus course. The locals say the Cheshire is better - I’ll go back to play it then! Tees can be expensive but we got 1pm for £44 each on their web site. Excellent club house and practice facilities - though £5.50 for 25 balls on the range may seem expensive - but you do get “top tracker” for that.

Links course with great views

I played at the end of the winter season. A lot of mats still in use. The course looked great and the fairways and greens were in good condition. But you need to know your way around - not always obvious where you should be aiming. We had very strong winds (gusting 60 mph) which made for a very tough day.

Nice, easy walking course

Well maintained course. Very flat so an easy walk. Playing in Feb on a cold and damp morning, the tees and fairways were good. Bunkers were fine too. Greens had a bit of wear but the fine to putt on - better than they looked. Very good clubhouse. Happily play there again.

Lovely old course

I believe the green fees are £90 (I had a freebee). It is a lovely course with lots of trees, bunkers and dog-legs. But I don’t think I would spend that much to play there.

Short course with great views

A short, 9 hole course high up on the Firth of Forth coast. 5 par 3’s and 4 par 4’s. Friendly club house. Some of the par 3’s can be very challenging Very open, the wind providing the biggest challenge. Great views on a clear day.

From the club website:
Rockies - 245 yards Par 3
Voted the toughest par 3 in the UK by Today's Golfer in September 2007 this is definitely a card wrecker

2 good courses offering different challenges

Both courses are well maintained and have a good variety of holes. Green fees are a tad expensive but members guest is £20 which I think is great. Just find a member (I am).

Nice well established course

From their web page: Chingford Golf Course was originally established in 1888 as the Royal Epping Forest Golf Club (REFGC)..... A later 1920s redesign is attributed to James Braid.

The REFGC still exists and their clubhouse overlooks the 1st tee and 18th green. But for us TSGers the pro shop, cafe and carpark are across the road, which is fine. The tees were somewhat worn and bumpy but overall the course was in good condition. Even with 12 par 4's there is a good variety of holes. I suspect some of the big-hitters will be a bit disappointed - so long as they stay accurate :-)

I didn't notice any practice facilities or use the cafe. Staff in pro shop were friendly and helpful. I'll happily play there again.

It is public space, so there will be dog walkers, non-dog walkers, cyclists etc. about. But they seem friendly enough and keep to footpaths. Just be aware.

Lots of sand

Not quite sure what to say. Course was tatty, tees very poor. I remember it being a lot better. Practice green was very bumpy and only 2 nets (but there is a top golf facility next door). Bar had run out of gas for beer and sandwiches, when they arrived, used stale bread.

Nice course.

Great value thanks to Ed. No driving range but otherwise very good practice areas. Course was in good conduction except for some of the bunkers. It is no longer owned by crown golf. Word is that the original owner has bought it back wants to improve overall quality.

Beautiful course on North Sea coast

Top course. Fantastic views. If you book a day or two in advance or as I did just turn up the green fees are excellent value. Weekend was £33 and weekdays were £31. Quite hilly (for an old boy like me) but I was not prepared to pay £40 for s buggy. Should probably have paid £15 for an electric trolly.

Pretty Little Course

Nice little course near Manchester. I played in and mats were compulsory on the fairway. These are little bits of plastic grass that you carry around to pick and place the ball on. Not everybody gets on with them. £15 online is good value in the winter, so long as you can get on with fairway mats.

Balcomie - Fantastic Links

Very old course on North Sea coast 12 miles south of St Andrews. Clubhouse is for members and players only - so dont waly there from Crail to have a look around and expect to have a pint and a sandwich if any members are lurking in the shadows. The course is short but very hard when the wind blows. Stunning views throughout. £49 green fees may seem expensive, but it's well worth it. Some fairways are a bit close to each other (or 4 holes share the same very wide fairway). I would play midweek when the course is quiet otherwise it might be a tad frustrating.

Lots of variety and a fair challenge

Played in March 2016 after plenty of rain and the course was in fair condition. Looking forward to playing again where a little knowledge will go a long way - I hope. Value for money based on discounted rate of £20. I didn't use clubhouse or practice facilities

Good quality course

I have played Mottram Hall a few times now. It can be busy at weekends, not so much during the week. But it is a great course and well looked after with lots of variety - the back 9 is quite different to the front. I play there using De Vere points which makes it good value - I don't know what the green fees are but I expect there are deals available during the week.

Very nice, well maintained course.

Played just the once and had a great day. Quite tricky, the fairways slope from side to side so you need to keep an eye on your ball once it starts rolling. The greens were true and fast. Much faster that I'm used to of late given the weather. Views across London are excellent. Clubhouse very friendly, or did they think I was a member of the visiting club that day?

Nice little course

Short course with 7 par threes and 2 par fives. Generally in good condition considering all the rain we had recently. No tee off times bookable on weekdays and it seemed everybody had decide to turn up at 10am so the queue was quite long. But this may well be the exception rather than the rule. I'll let you know after my next visit.

Good value for money

Very good value online. Don't pay full price. I think it is an average course and the greens were quite bumpy. But we only paid 13 quid each. I would add that we played just after the torrential rain at the start of May this year but you wouldn't have known that from the overall condition of the course.

Cheap, but better than you would expect for ten quid

Risebridge provides a cheap way to play golf. The tees are in poor condition and there are no rakes in the bunkers. But there is a good variety of hole and at £9 for eighteen on a Sunday afternoon, while it can be a bit slow, it is difficult to complain. Plays 5876 yards off yellow, par 71.
