Christmas 2012 comes early

Ok, so you play a golf club these days as a visitor and immediately they want you sign in and give accross your details i.e which club you play at(if your a member somewhere), your email address etc etc.

Now they want your email address so they can constantly send you offers/news etc, ive go so fed up of recieving these emails from golf clubs becauses the special offer are not that special I have started to unsubscribed to most of them ----- bar PUTTENHAM

Puttenham sent me a email that I can play 2/3/4 ball for a LIMITED period for £20 per round during the week before 9.30am if a 2-ball, before 9am if 3/4 ball.

Puttenham has been on my radar for sometime and the amount of offers I have had to play there with golfing bussies for some reason I have never had the chance and have heard nothing but rave reviews.

Woke up and was frosty as hell, got to the club(no wow factor driving into the car park) and probably been happy to have invisibly transported myself back to my bed.

We decieded to play from white tees 6200 yrds and even this seemed quite short in comparison, course was frosty and we knew the sun was due to thaw the course out, good starting 1st hole which was the picture on the score card, 2nd plays nice then followed by a short par 4, difficult 4th then the course really swings into action, what is followed is some excellent golfing holes, a summers day would have given the course that magnificent look.

Prices in the bar were reasonable and food was good.

Would be more than happy to pay double my green fee in the summer.

EXCELLENT

Superb condition

Green fees are £33, this is there own discount rate and does not include further reduction using open fairways.

The course was in superb condition(excellent tee boxes, greens lovely, really nice feel about the layout), was a members only course but now allow visitors(we were virtually the only ones on the course - played after lunch).

Course plays short off the yellows(5728 yrds), there are whites for members and Blacks for competition which would give the course a different outlook, the course is quite hilly with a few blind holes but for me who plays off 22 a very enjoyable course and for anyone else you would expect to play to your handicap here.

This is one I would call a little gem although one of our group was not so keen, different strokes for different folks I guess!!!

excellent value

Driving into Clandon Regis GC, there is a good feel about the place(did help, the weather was perfect) for a twilight round after 3PM - £20 green fee.

Now this course feels it does not play long, even the 150yrd markers feel closer, quite a few driver wedge shot holes, condition of the course was excellent(best greens ive played so far this year), again no spectacular holes but an enjoyable layout.

My only negative is when I asked the guy in the pro shop if it was busy, although it was quiet when we played he did say it was choca block in the morning which I could believe as they accept 2-1 vouchers!

not a bad course

One thing I like about Woldingham golf club is despite the space they have to make an 18 hole golf club, I LIKE THE LAYOUT.

Driving into the club it looks very open, unchallenging, and boring, personal opionion, I like this course -- greens not in great nick(time of year I guess) can get boggie(what pay and play course doesn't) but I never got bored on any of the holes, greens surrounded by good positioned bunkers(plenty of them)

looking forward to my return

Worth a visit

Cooden Beach Golf Club is one of the most peaceful golf courses you will play, you don't hear anything for what seems miles apart from a few cows mooing and the odd train going through which is quite pleasant, I'm no trainspotter but anyone who has played here will know what I mean.

The course in good condition despite the heavy amount of rain from the previous day, but I suspect they use a lot of temp greens in the winter judging by the clear marking of each temp, just before you play to the main green, which would prove dissapointing if this is the case.

Greens I felt played slow, however were quite tricky which I seemed to adjust quite easy to for a change, the fairways were quite open, although still plenty of room for trouble if you do seriously shank a shot!

Cooden Beach GC is a course that if, and hopefully when I retire (before I'm 40) and when I have a few quid under my belt, that I would quite happy to settle down and play this club week in and week out.

One thing I must say is when I played, conditions were perfect, but get the feeling it can get very windy when the wind does get up!

Another one of crowns bad courses

If you asked anyone who hasn't heard of Blue Mountain Golf Club, you would think this course sounds amazing " up in the mountains looking over deep blue ocean", a bit like Chelsfield Lakes, a golf course surrounded by beautiful lakes ---------- instead you couldn't be further from the truth with both.

So why is it Typical crown course, OK so i played here in a society, on the first tee the starter was saying to me that Blue Mountain are doing some deal at the moment £25 a month with all these benefits(to me he is a saleman wanting as many punters through the door a possible) I didnt know if he was offering me £25 a month to play there or for me to stump up £25 a month to play with there with 750(too many)keen members, like sunbury, traditions, chelsfield lakes these are just add on's that you wouldn't really rush back at these courses more than once to play unless you are part of the crown membership which includes these free rounds of golf as part of the benefits which attracts so many members(why on earth pyrford has to be on the scheme as doesn't need to be) now I know i cant speak for all crown courses but to me it is just a money making scheme that just want people through the door.

OK AS I SAY I CANT SPEAK FOR ALL CROWN COURSES BUT I HATE TIMESHARES AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

Now a good man once said to me, you pay for what you get and if its sounds to get to be true it probably is, now I like to go to a club with a personal feel to it and i hate the word golf centre on any sign as your approching a GOLF CLUB.

The only good thing about Blue Mountain was the greens were in good condition, a tad slow but still pretty good, this is the only highlight, course boring, 1 good hole(8th), tee boxes poor and i would like to ask every member how they could get excited about putting there clubs in the boot of there car to drive here, I couldn't

Im starting to ask myself, am I anti crown ---------- YES

Very tight

When coming to play Tilgate Forest Golf club as teenagers it was a big treat for us, we didnt drive back then and had to wait for my mate to invite us with his dad, due to space in his dads car he could only take 1 friend with them and he had to choose between about 10 of us, looking back it was like a ryder cup pick, if you were chosen you would be on cloud nine otherwise it was left to playing the crappy 9 hole at chessington.

I have played here twice in the last 15 years and not much has changed about the course, there wasnt many golfers around for a Sunday, still plays as tight as ever and you need to be on form(very treeline, lots of doglegs and the course plays just over 6000yrds off yellows) the course has all the charactistics of being a top course if money was spent on it, instead it will always be a pay and play.

Overall a good challenge, worth a play if your in the area, i still enjoy other local courses more(rookwood, cottesmore) but will return when i really hit form!!!!

Amazing 4th hole

10 years ago I turned up in Tenerife with the lads searching for girls, booze and nightclubs!!!!!

Roll on time and now im with Mrs Slums looking for something more conservitive, relaxation, be in bed before Mid-night, no heavy hangovers!!!!!!

I had hired a car and had promised the wife a day round the shopping centres, however after checking out the 3rd golf club she knew I had other intentions.

While at Adeje Golf club I had got chatting to a couple of English guys out on the island who had played the other courses in the Area, I was assured that Adeje was the best of the bunch so I went to book my tee time in the club house for the following day.

100 euro included Unlimited golf, buggy, club hire(callaway) and buffet(superb) so I booked my tee time for 7.58.

I was on my own(hate playing golf on my tod) and didn't want to get into any 5 hour plus rounds so set off being 1st person out on the day.

1st hole uphill par 5(struggled to adapt to my new set of clubs) 9 recorded already on the scorecard, 2nd hole par 3 ------ flew in with a par, 3rd hole superb par 5 where drive was vital, 4th hole Amazing downhill par 4 where all you can see is the ocean for miles, my scorecard was already damaged so scoring well was not an option now and it was all about enjoying it.

Having just played the 4th, if the rest of the course was going to be this spectacular then i am in for a real treat, 5th was a great par 3 but after this the course did not excite me too much more, greens were in ok condition but still thought the package was very good value and by the 16th with no score to beat i was looking forward to the buffet that was included.

Buffet ususally 14 euro if you are not playing golf and this was superb along with a well deserved beer.

Final verdict on Adeje golf club, if i was back in Tenerife i wouldn't say it would be top of my list to go back, however i did enjoy my round and would still reccomend this to anyone, however remembering the lads quoting to me the day before i booked up "this is a fantastic course" -------------- i wouldnt quite go that far.

Very tidy course

I found Oakland park golf club by accident, Oakland Park is a family run club, now this plays short with a great variety of holes, excellent condition and kept in a very tidy state.
Depspite being short this is still challenging and fun and I find everytime Ive played here I want to come back for more.
The 6th and 14th par 3 are little gems, as well as the beautiful short par 4 13th, the par 4's try and play a short dogleg holes to keep the course as challenging as it can be.
Ive played here about 3 times and the only problem is the drive round the M25 getting home as I have usually have played here about 2PM when the twilight rate starts so tend to get stuck in the traffic coming home. I believe the club accepts 2-1 vouchers although im not sure which other schemes they are in.

Slinfold Golf Club

Played Slinfold golf club on one of our SCC TOUR golf societys, upon arrival you can see that it also offers a health club, gym and swimming pool so if this comes with your annual golf membership, -- then you have the use of excellent facilities, my only worry is that ive been told it can get very busy and i suspect it has a lot of members and ive never been one for overcrowded clubs.
Anyway Breakfast on arrival was superb, a full English so this was a good setup before we got down to the golf, the course was a good variety of holes, plays just over the 6000yds so not to long but challenging I would say, fairways in pretty good condition although a little dry, greens very patchy and was the most disapointing thing about the course.
Overall I will look forward to returning next year when the tour hopefully returns to play here.

Kingswood Golf Club

Have waited a long time to play Kingswood golf club, £37.50 a round twilight rate, very friendly pro shop and looking at the course walking to the 1st tee you can see it is kept in great nick - greens very fast!!!!!

This is a challenging course, tree line, bunkers spread everywhere(you will find a bunker guaranteed) and some of the pins placed in difficult postions on the greens and plays 6500yrds off the yellow tees.

Over all I enjoyed my round here, I couldnt say there were any amazing holes, par 3's straight forward and some of the holes felt a bit same-ish, proberly 12th hole being my pick of the best,

So would I pay £59 greenfee if I was not playing twilight, probably not

Kent & Surrey Golf & Country Club(was edenbridge golf club)

Ok,

I used to play here about 6 years ago, had a few freebees so you can never complain at that however I did ----------------------- greens used to be terrible and I mean terrible(worst ive ever played on) which was enough to spoil the course ----- toooooo fast and just couldn't get any tempo on them.

Roll on 6 years, set up the same, range looks like a shed -- pro shop the same so I can see how this course may have struggled but looking on the brightside the greens have improved BIG TIME.

They have slightly altered the first two holes, have moved the tee box for the first hole which makes it slightly shorter, 2nd hole now a par 3 not a par 4 which makes the course about 300 yrds shorter.

One thing with Edenbridge golf club I mean Kent and Surrey golf club is that every hole offers something different, you cant take this course for granted - to shoot to your handicap is a good score so be prepered to use every club in the bag!!!

If this club spent some more money on the tee boxes and trimmed up round the edges this for me would be a very very good golf course.

Hats off to Edenbridgr for sorting out those greens.

Littlehampton golf club

Having been recommended by one of my customers, littlehampton golf club was next on my radar of courses to play this summer.

Littlehampton is a links course playing just under 6000yrs off yellow tees, played in perfect conditions and now on the 241 scheme.

The condition of the course was good, greens in good nick and a good variety of holes, a couple of holes could be accused of being up and down but for £17.50 this I must say is one of my bargain finds.

Now maybe I was in the right place at the right time and guess if the wind got up then this place could prove tricky.

Would I call this a hidden little gem ---------- possibly yes or did the fact I played well here and shot a good score may have taken over my emotions --- decide for yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surrey Downs

I had big expectations of Surrey Downs GC, with its neighbouring rival golf club Kingswood next door I wanted big things.

Driving down the drive to the clubhouse you get the initial impression its open = which it is.

Pro shop very friendly and are now on thw 241golf scheme so at £15 a round this was a bargain.

I couldn't say that there are any spectacular holes but the layout was enjoyable, the right distance for Par 4's, and Par 5's which proberley explain the longer distance for par 3's.

The greens are superb and in immaculate condition, very fast which i had been told about before i had played.

£30 a round without the vouchers may have been a little too much but at £15 a round this is one of the best value round of golf that i have ever had.

hats off to Surrey Downs and I hope you don't get too much riff raff at your club -------- I know what your thinking ============ Snob ------------ i don't care.

East Brighton

We all ask fellow golfers "what is your favourite golf course", now we all can say the most expensive one we have played but for me its East Brighton ----------- SO WHY.

A) Great value using 2-4-1 vouchers
B) Always in good condition, fairways are very soft
C) Great variety of holes
D) Quite open and not to long so its not often you will walk off the first hole with an 8(like i have) thinking that you have buggered your round up
E) Friendly pro shop
F) You can play the last 6 holes listening to the race commentry during race meetings
G) While playing the course the smelling of the seaside fresh air, listening to the seagulls flying above you(that because I play a lot of golf in the London Suburbs)

I could proberley make a case for H,I,J and so on.

Some people who have played here may think what is all the fuss about, but in my heart -this is home for me.

Leatherhead Golf Club

Growing up as a kid, Leatherhead always had a reputation of being expensive to me, its taken me 32 years to play here and now i can say i have,
Over the last 5 months they have reconstructed all the tees on the back nine which are now in use,
Anyway booked a teetime through teeofftimes.co.uk for 14.00 and all went smooth, got to the pro shop to check in at 13.20 and was told we can go out whenever we were ready. Now to play before 14.00 was double the price so a result that we could still go out despite paying half the price to go out after 14.00(friendly pro shop).

OK pros - some really good holes, 3rd, 5th, 11th, 12th 13th, 14th(my fav) 15th and 17th, nice halfway hut, good tee boxes back 9, great facilities.

cons - Tee boxes on the front 9 need reconstructing, greens not in great condition, no short par 3's, some of the fairways very hard(could imagine gets boggy in the winter)

I have already penned in my diary my next visit and if they could sort out the tee boxes on the front nine this would be would be a very very tidy course.

Hounslow Heath

Whats marmites slogan ---------- U EITHER LOVE IT OR HATE IT.

I used to play here as a kid and have this affection for this club and would hate to ever see the day the club folded.

that sums up hounslow heath golf club.

YES---- its owned by the council

Yes---- It looks a bit tacky(poor clubhouse/flags are poor condition/some tee boxes are poor) but this is public land.

Hounslow heath charge £10 a round and there are 4 holes that if were layed out on a private course the holes in my point of view would be spectaculor.

Par 3 5th
Par 4 14th
Par 4 15th
Par 4 16th

I love these holes and they always tell me not to be taken for advantage.

Hounslow Heath is a bit like the plain jane in the office, u don't know what it is ----- but theres something about them that make u smile everytime u see them.

Hounslow heath will always have a place in my heart if not anybody elses.

36 hole bonanza

I joined the GOLF MAGIC golf society at THE ADDINGTON back in january, so had been looking forward to this for a long time, it was £60 for 36 holes including lunch.
A week before the event i had been checking the weather forecast praying for the gods above to deliever some tropical sun, it wasn't meant to be.
Having played ADDINGTON PALACE last week it had me expecting BIG expectations.
The best part of the course is from holes 6 to 14, some spectacular layouts and holes you couldn't get bored with, The bridges you walk over to get to certain parts of the holes really make the course(if you have played here you will know what i mean).
The greens are in very good condition and are very difficult to read so you will need your putting shoes with you.
My only minor gripe, and this is minor is that i have played on better tee boxes and i felt some were a little overgrown or had too many divots in them(par 3's)
Can't wait till next year.

Addington Palace

I booked the tee time for 13.08 through teeofftimes.co.uk for the first time and the transaction went smoothly, it was £20 to play ADDINGTON PALACE after 13.00.
Drove into the car park and you are left feeling insecure leaving your car there due to reading reports regarding cars getting broken into in the past.
Anyway walking to the pro shop you now get the feeling that this is a very proud members club(no mobile phones allowed onced beyond the gates, they dont appreciate you changinging into your golf shoes in the car park, strict dress code etc) I am starting to think this could be a it snobby ------ how wrong was I.
Guy in the pro shop could't have been more helpful, every member that walked past me acknowledged me when walking past.
Got to the 1st tee and a very average 1st hole(par 3), after the 2nd hole you are thinking what all the fuss is about, then got to the 3rd and a great par 4 followed by a great par 4 4th(need to be accurate on both) -------- four ball(members) in front more than happy to let us through.
The back nine opens up more and allows you to be more fluent with the driver and all the greens in excellent condition.

There is only one way i could sum up ADDINGTON PALACE, its like going out on a blind date and falling in love despite only going for a pizza.

highly recommended and with a society planned next week at THE ADDINGTON(review will follow) i just hope the weather will be good to us.

Fantastic course, 6500yrds off yellow tees, weather was perfect, course was very well kept although greens have been spiked(like most courses this time of the year - getting ready for the summer.)
The course is challenging although you are still able to get the driver out and have a real go, i think the course is one where u have to ATTACK the pins to shoot a good score.

The course is only 5 mins away from my flat but has been about 5 years since I played here last.

Played here during Epsom Golf Clubs BIG THAW promotion of 9.95(usually £26)which expires at the end of feb.

Its one of those course that you either love or hate, not a long course(5300 yrds yellow tees) but has a lot of interesting holes, felt the course could do with a bit more attention(some of the greens in poor nick - unable to find some of the yellow tee markers on some holes)

Might be a good idea you have golf insurance before you play here as on a few of the holes you a
play run parallel to a busy road however gives you a bit more incentive to hit a decent shot if you haven't.

Would I come back and pay £26 - prob not - will have to wait till they run there next promotion.
